Bayern Munich fired Carlo Ancelotti as coach on Thursday after the German team’s heaviest Champions League group-stage defeat.

Ancelotti, 58, helped Bayern win the Bundesliga last term, but they only reached the last eight of the Champions League and the German Cup semi-finals.

Assistant boss Willy Sagnol will take temporary charge. A statement released shortly before 4 p.m. CET read: "Following an internal analysis in Munich on Thursday 28 September 2017, FC Bayern München have announced the club is to part company with head coach Carlo Ancelotti with immediate effect. Assistant coach Willy Sagnol will take charge of the team on an interim basis."
