What happened to the original leather of the upholstery?

In addition the rear seats upholstery is an insult to the pristine seat craft of the w210 by Benz... What happened? You could have replaced those seats for buttons.

I will ignore the engine front cover. It's a used car... And such is often seen on Mercedes Benz engines.
