Women in Tanzania are marrying each other and even sharing beds in order to keep their houses in the absence of husbands, according to reports.

A centuries-old local tradition, called ‘nyumba ntobhu’ or ‘house of women’, has been given a modern revival by members of the Kurya tribe in remote villages in the north of the country.

Under the tradition, a woman is permitted to marry a younger woman if she is widowed or her husband chooses to leave her. This means she can keep the family home which is jointly owned with the younger woman, despite a tribal law which dictates that only males can normally inherit property.

The younger woman is then able to take a male partner and potentially give birth to male heirs on the older woman's behalf.

This act is a very common tradition even in Igbo communities.......and the idea behind it is quite reasonable especially when you read her reasons. The young lady can also bear more children for the elderly lady without the world getting to know who the biological father is. For every child she bears is for the elderly lady and tradition accepts that child as an heir to the family lineage. African traditions can be very interesting

i prefer adoption of a baby than this. The woman just want to satisfy herself but what will happen when the children grow up and ask for their father? U think their mother will not tell them who their father is? Even if she didn't want to, she will definitely succumb when the pressure become much.

Seems you don't understand what's playing out here. The woman doesn't want strangers to inherit her late husband's wealth. Traditionally, these children will be seen as her late husband's children it doesn't matter who their real father(s) may be.
