dulux07:Oga go and employ a nanny not househelp. people don't know the diff between househelp and nanny. Nanny is a professional, adult like you who specializes in keeping your home in order when your not around while househelp is simply a helper just as the name implies. as she is underage and rendering help to you, is ur obligation To Help her to school too. how much are you paying her? |

She is absolutely right. Dis is d reason y parents are advised to bear children dt can be catered for. why did he/she hav to go for d job in d 1st place.?? sending a house help to school aint d compulsory duty of his/her oga/madam. Parents are to TRY to cater for deir children basic needs, including basic education. Allowing a child to go & work as a house help aint an opportunity to shift d education responsibility to d employer. However, a passionate oga/madam may decide to assist d maid educationally out of LOVE & COMPASSION, but definitely not her duty. Her duty is to ensure her safety, up-keeps, & of course her SALARY, either monthly or at d end of d year. Finally, dis is y it is nt advisable to employ an under age kid as maid, but an adult & a matured person who can truly be entrusted with d care of d home & also d children, probably som1 over d age of 20yrs old,. |

ivolt:Simple! Anyone having a house-help of school age (that hasn't completed high school (senior secondary school)) and calls such a minor an employee, and so does not have to go to school because he or she is paid, is a cancer to the society. Because there are so many of them in the society that it is taken as normal. If one has a house-help of school age, it is obligatory to put him or her through school, whether he or she is paid or not. That's responsibility and one of your many contributions to society. In fact, there is an English term for it "Noblesse Oblige." Public schools are relatively inexpensive. -Lord |

GetMeRight:ur welcome sir. in developed countries there is nothing like househelp, is nanny. if they catch u with a girl working in ur house rather than being in school is a great felony, u will be arrested and her parents too. they don't even try it. |

omoiyamayor:Oga so because Saudi Arabia until recently did not allow their women to drive cars, would you also say Nigerian women shouldn't drive cars? We are talking about how civilized people should behave, and you're trying to sound clever by half. No one wants to work as a maid, much more kids who should be having the time of their lives. I think much of the confusion is about having minors vs adults as maids/house-helps. For minors, they have to be put through school. For adults, it's up to the agreement they have with their employers, but it typically is down to payment only. -Lord |

victorazyvictor:First, nothing like UNDERAGE is in d post. d lady used EMPLOYED, so shes not rendering any help, she gets paid. So all those young guys that work as cashiers, work in mr biggs, mc donalds, business centres, sales girl etc...is it their boss that sponsors their education. they could ve hired an adult or professional too.. . The main thing is their employer treats them well. |

dulux07:If she employed certified person, then she shouldn't be talking about school. When you get to village and carry person pikin as househelp u supposed enroll the person into school. Remember they said "girl" not lady or woman as ur trying to claim who is a girl, lady and full blown woman? plz answer. |

I quite agree. The house help was employed to do a job and is being paid to do that job. Sending her to school or to learn a skill is an added benefit or advantage by the employer. The house helps are paid but the employer still provides the needs like clothes, cosmetics, etc. Sending her to school is a choice |

omoiyamayor:No doubt we need to apportion blames correctly. People having more children than they can take care of is a no-no. But some parents in the rural areas let their kids go live with relatives or someone close in the cities to better their lot. No matter how you look at it, it beats wasting away in the village. There'd always be fruits that fall off the wrong tree, it's called the birth lottery. Like the way most of us would have preferred to be born elsewhere. The point is that if you are privileged to have the means to support a minor who lives and helps with chores, put him or her in school. It is the right thing to do. That's a kid and a human being. There's a reason why kids are given the highest level of priority whenever disaster strikes. At least have some empathy. This ain't my kid, so not my problem is reprehensible when it means denying a kid who is paying his/her dues a basic fundamental child right. Read the UN convention on child rights on http://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/CRC.aspx That Nigeria is lawless where it is not enforced unlike in other countries isn't reason enough to have a laissez-faire attitude. And to think a lot of you went to a church yesterday or a mosque on friday. No one is talking about giving the kid full scholarship until he becomes a doctor. Put him or her through primary and/or secondary school (as the case may be) to give him/her a shot at making something out of his or her life. Public schools cost next to nothing. And he/she only has to be out from 7 am - 2 pm. That I have to explain this is one of the most depressing things I've done on NL. Can't bring myself to reply you again. -Lord |

LordAdam16:I'm talking about issue when a maid gets paid to the family or agents that's brings them,in fact this maid are so oriented that u will imagine who was behind that.my mom once had a maid from Togo I tried to ask her how she turned to b maid and she made me realise it's a process kids go thru at their village, she added that she has 5 more siblings in Nigeria doing the same,in this case if all the people they work for been sending them to school, will you label their bosses as fools for trying to help and dont u think it will encourage their society to produce more kids for trafficking? For me Abuses and molesting is a NO NO but the system should be more professional so that their parents will feel the Guilt. Mind u I'm not talking about relatives you don't pay cus that's taking advantage of situation. |

omoiyamayor:What you just described is text-book child trafficking. Every party that supports child trafficking is wrong. When there stops being demand for these minors to work as house-helps, the supply will reduce. And then it'd take a very contemptible person extra effort to smuggle a child. In the UK, if your mom was caught (I say if, because there are some Nigerian families that do same there and are careful enough not to get caught), say a neighbor tipped the police, she'd have gone to jail. And it is not because it is a draconian law, but because if you want something to stop, you don't encourage it by becoming a part of it. Don't pay for a minor from Togo or wherever through an agent or directly to a family. It is slavery. Hire an aged maid or if you must, because it's kinda part of our culture (and used to be part of the European culture in the middle ages especially between noble families), have a relative stay with you and take good care of the person, including educating him or her if s/he is a minor. I wouldn't even comment on whether it is okay to educate a minor who is effectively a slave, because then it'd make it appear as though it isn't awful to buy a minor. Of course, parents who sell their kids shouldn't expect the buyer to treat them any better than owners treated their slaves in the past. Sure, not all owners treated their slaves poorly, and many slaves preferred to serve their owners than become free, often marrying a fellow slave and having their kids serve the progenies of their owners in perpetuity. But look around you, it isn't the 11th century. And there's a reason that for all those nice, surreal anecdotes of some owner-slave relationships, slavery was banned. And people even opted to die to make sure it was banned. That selling kids is a process kids have to go through in Togo doesn't make it right. Female genital mutilation is part of some African cultures, I don't see you advocating it for your daughter. The only right way to make the parent feel the guilt is to not be part of the demand. Because a parent who sells his/her child to a stranger in some faraway land doesn't have the capacity to feel guilt if the child doesn't end up educated. After all, the parent never had any plans to educate the child. If s/he did, s/he wouldn't have put a price tag on the child. Read about a similar scenario of Nepalese Dalit Child Brides, some are sold and others are kidnapped. Even with the laws frowning on it, there is still demand from deplorables and the practice continues. -Lord |
