An Ozoro High Court in Delta State yesterday sentenced a 38-year-old farmer, Francis Williams, to death by hanging for snatching N170 and a N5,000 handset from a former councillor, Mr. Noah Ovie, at gunpoint.

Justice A. O. Akpovi found Williams guilty of the charge of armed robbery punishable under Section (1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap RII Volume 14 Laws of the Federation, 2004. The convict got 10 years for wounding his victim with intent and was sentenced to death by hanging for being in possession of firearms.

An Assistant Director in the Ministry of Justice, T. R. Anuhwin, through prosecution witnesses, told the court that on June 4, 2014, at a Palm Kernel Farm located at Ewu in Ughelli South Local Government, the accused robbed Ovie and his personal assistant of a Nokia handset valued at N5,000 and N170 cash while armed with a cut-to-size locally-made gun. Prosecution witnesses also recalled how the convict was apprehended.

“The victims summoned courage and overpowered their assailant. In his desperation to escape after being apprehended, he bitoff one of the fingers of the former councillor before his escape bid was foiled by some passers-by, who rushed to the scene and held him down and handed him over to the police,” the prosecutor averred.

Williams, who confessed to the crime after he was arrested by the police, retracted same during trial but called no witness to testify for him. The prosecutor, however, called four witnesses to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt.
