Afonja was the Aare-Ona-Kakanfo (military general and commander), stationed by the Alaafin of Oyo(Yoruba Emperor) to guard the northern frontier of Yorubaland (Ilorin) against Fulani invasion. He betrayed the Alaafin and the Yoruba people enabling Ilorin to fall under Fulani control. Google the story for more information.
