I hope you know that Nigeria is multi tribal with each tribe having an entirely different language?

That will actually divide the nation more along tribal lines.

U misunderstand my post... English is d official language and as such is paramount.. Now instead of making languages such as Arabic and French compulsory , its beta to make d indigenous languages compulsory.. Other regions to shld go ahead and promote our languages. Remember it is beta to learn a Nigerian language whether its urs or not than to learn a foreign language like Arabic or french

It is a good thing that you have realized there is a SERIOUS problem and you are making conscious efforts to remedy it.
You failed to inculcate the language in him from the start- many parents make that mistake- But at least now that you have realized- you are doing something.

1. this is one of the biggest mistakes we parents of this generation make.
2. I agree with you, we need to remedy this quickly. If I have my way, I would not even my children foreign names. My wife once called my daughter's school and specifically told them that our daughter should be addressed by her Yoruba name and not her English/Jewish-origin name.

What an ironic statement!
Igbos are not the ones killing people that are ironically tagged 'Infidels' from Sothern Kaduna to the Middle belt down to the East. If you want people to respect your religion then strive to make it peaceful, simple!

Very good.

All Southwest states including Kwara and parts of Kogi should adopt the same policy.

However, we need to move beyond this and make it a unit course in our Universities.

God bless Yorubaland. Amen

Let me share my idea on unity.
If two candidates go for a federal job and are tied on merit . They can be separated on the basis of performance in other Nigerian languages than their own.
The more languages you know the better your chances
It may be too late for adults but children can learn 2- 4 languages quite easily and this should be the vision for the future.
certainly all policemen and soldiers can and should be multilingual in the future.
listening to some nigerian children speak English is excruciating sometimes. Why not allow them to be natural. The main casualty I see is music.Naturally we like to sing and it is in childhood that we learn songs .Are we supposed to be singing in English.

All the childhood stories and the associated songs are being forced into oblivion. It is really painful
How many kisdss these days can sing

Iya Iya t'akun wa'le and so

The other consequence hopefully of this is the creation of a Yoruba publishing industry whether paper or electronic

Novels, comics and so on but equally there are so many classic works waiting to be translated e.g Nelson Mandela's Biography and such like.
There is one point a lot of people do not realise about English. Once upon a time the language of learning in Europe was Latin and to be learned meant to know latin and this was in England. Ask any medical student about Latin and anatomy
Where is Latin today? So we must reject the notion that English replacing our language is inevitable. English grew by borrowing extensively from Latin. English is a Germanic language All the emboldened words have Romance or Latin roots as do most word starting with : RE ,CON ,
It is not inevitable. We have a choice.
Our language needs resuscitation just like a very sick patient but there is still life in it.It is not dead
What is funny to me is the opponents/ Champions of English are people who know very little about English or language in general

I have a 9yr old son that struggles to speak and comprehend Yoruba. It bothers me a lot. Basic things like "alubosa", "Igbale" etc he will ask you what does that mean? In 5-6yrs time, we will ship him abroad (he has said it in unmistakable terms that he's going to flying school), then what? If we are not careful, we have raised a man that will have no identity or cultural heritage.

So

I decided to speak Yoruba to him at all times
The problem goes beyond speaking. For a language to survive it must have relevance ,Utility and ubiquity. Utility is what I like to emphasize. For a young person today that means a language must be useful on the internet and in general reading e.g . Newspapers, magazines, novels, films, cartoons etc.
Right now this can only happen artificially in the same way as Man City PSG and Chelsea were created. Yoruba books are not being published because no one is buying them. Making it compulsory in schools may push demand for textbooks but young people should be encouraged to publish contemporary peer relevant stuff
There is need for a foundation with deep pockets to fight the cause in the publishing world.
If any created a Foundation for that purpose would you put your hand in your pocket? That is the koko

Even though that I commend their efforts, They should have made the language a circular one by introducing other major ethnic languages like IBO and Hausa since Lagosians comprises different ethnicity.

He opined that muslims of the Western region prefer to be subservient rather than confront their feudal masters holding Nigerians to ransom. It's you duty to counter him than denigrate all Igbos over an individual's comment. Secondly, you mentioned igbo's religious intolerance, you also need an evidence to back it up.
Last time i checked, the war happened in the 60s but the people organizing sectarian violence in Nigeria before and after the war are muslims not forgetting boko haram and fulani herdsmen. I've not even mentioned the entire world.
Keep your guilty conscience and paranoia over the criticism of a violent religion.

New york is a bad example here because New york has no official language. That is unlike Lagos were every ethnicity represented use English as a formal language.
Inspite of New york's diversity, English is used in most formal establishments and it is taught in schools irrespective of the student's background. Spanish may be compulsory or taught in few neighbourhoods like Harlem where Spanish speaking people dominate but there is no enforcement of any regional or indigenous language in schools where there is a melting pot of people rather those languages are left as electives or taught to students from a specific language group.
By making a language compulsory in the melting pot of Nigeria, you are indirectly alienating students from other backgrounds. If same law is passed in other regions of Nigeria,it wouldn't really be appealing.
The idea should be a uniform compulsory education in the 3 major languages of Nigeria, that is,if Nigeria is ready to compliment English with Nigeria's local languages in formal enviroment.
One thing that has helped America grow is the act of deriving strenght from their diversity. Here in Nigeria,we always emphasize selfish and supremacist tendency 'you must learn my language because Lagos is not your own'.
I understand that you resent igbos and quickly criticize any comment made by an igbo on this thread.

Melting Pot ,Represented

These are very interesting terms did you and the indigenes of Lagos agree that THEIR land is a pot for melting. Did they discuss this "representation" with anyone ? It is exactly against such notions that pushback is necessary before it becomes too late. Everyone is now being put on notice that Lagos is Yoruba land and you are welcome if you accept that . It is not up for Negotiation

I don't see it a "schizophrenic", or "tightening the noose". I think it's a very good thing (and I'm not Yoruba)... I think schools in each state should make it compulsory to teach the language of that area. I took 2 years of Yoruba classes growing up, and realize that we all have very rich histories, traditions, sayings, morphologies, and so many things that we don't learn about our own languages.

It's a wonderful thing, and I hope others will follow suite. It's funny to see Africans complaining about learning the language of other Africans yet don't see the irony in mastering European languages.

I wouldn't argue along tribal lines inspite of the fact that your comments reeks of it.
There are points of melting pots and cultures all over the world and this is not only relative to Nigeria alone.
By virtue of the strategic importance of Lagos and place in Nigeria's history including being the fastest growing urban city in Africa and former capital of Nigeria, all sorts of ethnicity has flocked to Lagos and over the years it has become a 'melting pot of Nigeria' and it is recognized as such in Nigeria, Africa and the world.
This is not even open for arguments, therefore i didn't need to agree with anyone before defining what Lagos mean to Nigerians.
I also don't know where i mentioned Igbo in my argument, the fact that you chose to make a diatribe about Igbos and constant reference to bastards shows the great divide in Nigeria and the prejudice in your heart.
Are Igbos the only occupants of Lagos? Why do you always feel threatned when people emphasize that Lagos belongs to all as it is a melting point of Nigerians?
While 'Lagos is a no man's island'' is disrespectful and wrong, it doesn't negate the fact that Lagos is the pride of all and it's diversity has made it colourful and famous?
Why weeding out the bastards as you say don't forget that Lagos is powered by contributions of all Nigerians.

This bill will only set Nigeria on a path where non yoruba students may end up picking only yoruba to the detriment of the growth of their mother tongue.
Why must it always be about weeding the 'bastards' out in a supposedly One Nigeria city?
How about respecting Nigeria's diversity by making it compulsory for Yoruba students and elective for students of other ethnicities?
Nigeria is still toying with tribalism, she is not yet ready to grow.

Thirdly, Igbo is spoken by all born and bred in Igboland. Igbos by nature are adventurous so they end up picking the languages of their immediate environment. That doesn't mean they hate their language. That is in contrast with you paranoid people that sit in your enclave which limits your competence in other languages.
You have to put things in context before spewing this sort of nonesense.
Nollywood: igbos kick started what we call the modern nigeria movie industry and they made those movies in the language. When Nigerians started demanding for translations, they realized that making only Igbo movies will restrict their market, that is how they started making English language movies.
Your modern yoruba cheap movie industry should rather give credit to those that brought international attention to nollywood.
Following the creation of Africa magic Igbo, more Igbo movies are made available to viewers.
I hate to get involved in an argument full of ignorance and assumptions.
