AreaFada2:Any group of people that want to have their own country should be allowed to do so, it shouldn't be by force to live together in bitterness. |

Odingo1:Well, life has never worked like that. Central power hardly let sub-groups go. New countries were normally created through war conquest. Very few peacefully. Even USA had to win independence war to be sovereign. Most countries you see came about like that. Either to come into existence, survive or both. Israel only gained more territory and consolidated power by winning 1967 war. Before that it was in serious danger from all sides around it. Our leaders made the error at independence. Zik & Awo had the chance to gain independence for the South before 1960 and leave the North under the British. But no, they hesitated. Waiting till 1960 for the North to be ready. After January 1966 coup, the North wanted to leave too. Again the South & UK/USA persuaded them to stay. Now they have fought civil war to defend Nigeria, tasted central power and sweet petrol dollars. Now they want to keep enjoying it. ![]() |

AreaFada2:Thanks for the submission. On a side note, giving any group freedom to leave any time they feel like will cause gradual disintegration which may eventually lead to total collapse of the world order...imagine a world without any form of government....I can't see man surviving in this situation as he is a social being and he relies mainly on association for strength and survival. |

I can imagine the dissapointed IPOB miscreants' faces reading this. If Catalonia with its parliament, reps, reps in their national parliament, boundary is finding it difficult then someone please beg one of those IPOB terrorists to tell me the chance Biafra will have especially after getting so many non-Igbo people angry with their hate speeches? |

Of course, they won't...... It's signal the end of Germany..... Bravarians has been calling for independence from Germany for decades.... Catalan independence might ignite it |

Mccullum:greed? U must be joking.... What's happening to Niger delta is same thing that's happening to catalan... But theirs is worse.... Spain is being controlled by Madrid, they made Castilian Spanish and culture their official while trying to suppress other languages, despite Catalonia and basque are the economic hub of spain |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by martineverest(m): 4:41am On Oct 28, 2017 |
AreaFada2:ur Last paragraph is wrong... Catalan contribute the largest tax to Spanish economy but get one of the least returns, just like Niger delta..... If theu go independent, they will be among the 5 richest countries in Europe |

martineverest:The extra more they contribute to Madrid will not be enough to pay for the cost of running a national govt. Embassies, military and more. That it would number 5 economy is utter nonsense. How. Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Holland, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland. And how does it get to number 5? I have regularly visited Barcelona/Catalonia since around Olympic there. The transformation since and wealth have been partly due to being part of Spain and EU. EU membership would be blocked by Spain. Catalonia already owes a large debt. Plus the share of national debt they will get. I think Spain is protecting unity out of principle and fear contagion effect. What if Andalusia, Basque country and Balearic Islands also decide to break away? Not really about economy in modern times. If majority of Catalonia really want to go, let them go. But in opinion poll, just over 40% want independence. The referendum was illegal. Spain should allow a legal one. |

| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by Nobody: 8:59am On Oct 28, 2017 |
AreaFada2:The first companies have left Catalonia. Anyone who thinks, Catalonia will be better off if they secede, is ignorant to economic realities, just like the Brexshitters. And no, they can't go just like that. It would need a change in the constitution, not only a referendum. Besides, the existing borders in Europe have emerged as the result of many many bloody wars. If you think, regression will make things better, you are ignorant of history as well. |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by einsteine(m): 9:01am On Oct 28, 2017 |
Stop lying. Catalonia won't be among the top ten economies in Europe. In fact, it's economy is not as large as the rest of Spain. Where would you put Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, France, UK, Spain, Germany, Austria if you say Catalonia would be top 5? Abeg make una dey try get sense. martineverest: |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by Nobody: 9:01am On Oct 28, 2017 |
AreaFada2:Exactly! Europe has a bloody history of princedoms fighting each other in numerous wars. Anyone who thinks regression will make things better is oblivious to history and fo.olish. Catalonia has been part of Spain longer than the USA has existed, they are going nowhere. Mark my words. |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by Nobody: 9:10am On Oct 28, 2017 |
martineverest:Get your facts right. Catalonia is an autonomous region and nobody has been suppressing Catalan since Franco, who was a dictator. Franco is gone, Spain is a democracy. This story of the oppressed people is no longer true. |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by Nobody: 9:16am On Oct 28, 2017 |
martineverest:Especially since the first companies are leaving, just like in GB after Brexit. Besides, you can't secede and unite just because there are economic fluctuations. This would cause massive chaos and numerous wars. It is ok if you are oblivious to European history as an African but as a matter of fact the existing borders are the result of bloody wars. I do not think any sane person who knows history wants to regress to the times when European powers were fighting bloody wars leaving Europe in total destruction, poverty and hunger. The EU has granted freedom and peace for decades. These local aspirations in the name of freedom are hogwash and will not bring about the desired results. Brexit should be a lesson learned. Cooperation and not isolation is the way. We need progress, not regression. |

einsteine:oga get sense na........ Catalonia has one of the highest income per capita in Europe...... Making one of d richest...... Try and know differences btw richest and largest economics. America is world's largest economy but isn't among the 5 richest Catalonia economy is also the largest in Spain |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by martineverest(m): 10:20am On Oct 28, 2017 |
AreaFada2:oga the 'richest' is far different from the 'largest'.... What u mentioned is d largest economies in Europe not the richest America has the largest economy in the world but not among the 5 richest |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by einsteine(m): 10:45am On Oct 28, 2017 |
You are the one who still doesn't want to have sense. In terms of per capita income, Monaco, Luxembourg, Andorra, Malta, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium are all higher than Catalonia. martineverest: |
| Re: Catalonia Independence Not Recognised, Says Germany by AreaFada2: 2:36pm On Oct 28, 2017 |
martineverest:By whatever subjective standard you choose, you are still wrong. Unless you can tell us what the GDP per capita would be compared to the countries mentioned. And how you arrived at it. Catalonia has 16% of Spanish population and contributes 19% of Spanish GDP. This is not a big deal compared to what Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg or Rhineland Westphalia contributes to the federal purse of Germany. Or what London region contributes to UK economy. This is not anywhere near 70% of Nigerian FG income that comes from oil, mostly from Niger Delta. Spanish GDP per capita is $27,000 (Normal). The extra/net nearly 10 billion Euro Catalonia contributes to Spanish will not raise their GDP per capita to beat Germany of $41,000, Holland 45,000, France 36,800, Italy 30,000, UK 39,900, Belgium 41,000, Sweden 51,600. So your assertion is still inaccurate. Assuming they even continue in EU (doubtful), 10 billion Euro will not run the state bureaucracy of a new country. Companies will move their HQ reducing tax income, jobs will be lost too. Independence looks attractive and romantic, but not easy. |
