100% of Nigerians didn't go to America for basic amenities. It was after they got there and saw the reality of things that they started consoling themselves talking about light, roads etc. Trust me brother, it is a trillion times easier to make it in Nigeria than America. It is not for you to know but those who live there knows it deep down and it hurts. They will never admit it in public though.
gist4real:
Comparing Nigeria with America? Really? Even Benin Republic is better than Nigeria.
They have a system that works. Basic amenities are what they are: Basic things that every Tom, Dick and Harry has.

Do you know what it feels like to have electricity every single second of every single day of your life? To drive on good roads, to have your basic rights respected? To be able to afford food? To send your kids to the best school in the world. To know that in case anything happens to you, your children will be catered for?

Here basic amenities are electoral promises that the foolish politicians dangle at us every 4years make the gullible ones vote.

How many people earn 80,000/month in Nigeria? Really how many?
So many things to say but as I dey type I just dey vex.
Nigeria is not fit to be mentioned in the same sentence with The U.S.

OP , I totally understand that there's no place like home. But the way you make your point doesn't worth it, yes most of these guys in America do menial jobs yet they have built duplexes and has many Landed properties in Nigeria, this is called investment wise. Oh, you think they spend all their money in the states? Again I never saw where you mentioned social amenities like constant power supply, good road, health facilities, water etc. At least they pay tax and enjoy what the money is being used for. Please don't be biased in your judgement. Thanks

Bro, which part of Nigeria can a monthly salary of 80k get you a two bed room apartment?..Maybe somewhere in the inner rural areas or a ghetto. Where i live, a decent two bed room flat goes for nothing less than 600k per year, so i wonder how you can save such money from a 80k monthly salary
timesup234:
Even someone earning 2500 usd before tax in America has a room mate while someone earning 80k in nigeria can afford to rent a two bedroom flat if he chooses to move out of his father's house.

Travelling abroad is not only about money. Many of my married friends took the decision to relocate because of their children future. Our outlook about living a decent life as Africans is not the best,we quantify everything in monetary terms. We are here for a very short time and are nearby to enjoy life while it last.@ op,You only know the type of country you are encouraging people to stay if God forbid somebody close suffer a terminal illness, you will then discovered that all your supposed savings will amount to nothing. How many of us have the job? But in US or all those countries you can have a job and plan for a better one.How many Nigerians can live like a bank manager in this era where job is hot cake? Many guys are making it in foreign countries legally if you hussle.Educationally,we are no where,my fear for Nigeria is how we are going to survive if all countries switch to electric cars or renewable energy."if I get visa,na go I dey, lemme paying all the bills at least have seen bank managers relocating and they never regretted their actions".Probability of making it abroad among many samples is far higher than in Nigeria if you have your papers, your children will triple your investment. People quickly forgot that our children are future investment, what we give to them in terms of education, environment and oppotunity equals the returns we are going to get when we are old.Its not only house or fat bank account that is investment.Only very few individuals are making it in Naija.

Hmmm. First and foremost I'm proud to be Nigerian but not happy with the way Nigeria is. The argument has two sides but let me share this. I once met a lady on a flight from us to Dubai and we had a long interesting conversation. Guess what ? She is Egyptian by birth but now American after living there for close to 30 years and she said something that forever will strike me. She said she will always be an Egyptian by heart and soul but her allegiance will forever be American simply because there is RULE OF LAW.

Having looked at the arguments here one thing I can say is that until there is the rule of law operating as it should. There is no way a Nigerian is living a better life than the American. No matter whether he his hustling or doing menial jobs. I won't start a whole new debate on this but truly this is deep and life constitutes equality and justice most importantly amongst other things which we sadly do not have here and honestly will take a miracle to happen soonest. I'll just leave it here like this.

OP is clearly a returnee from America and my bet is that he had a nasty experience there. However I think a lot of the points he raised are real. Even without living in the US, if you pay discerning attention to their way of life you can spot the tale tells of what the OP is saying. Anyway, I'm looking at going to Costa Rica for my undergraduate studies. I already know the country's currency is even weaker than the naira. Incredible! But I'm going to need some income while studying there so can anyone share some wisdom?

Bro one thing you don't understand about America is that they don't have African man mentality where you save millions in the bank (bank doing business with your money and making cool cash). Americans enjoy life as if rapture will happen tomorrow, they already have everything running smoothly for them. So why saving? Forget about the issue of money in the bank for Americans cos they don't give a f** about that.

over & outgrin

You are on point! They dont fancy the life style of having the money they don't need. It has become their culture to be satisfy with whatever they have now, they prefer to spend their five years savings on a trip to Ireland than to keep it in the bank vault.

Another liar. I am planning a second part of this post. Now quote me..An immigrant bank manager in America can't be compared to a bank manager here in Nigeria. Please note immigrant in quote. There is no high paying profession in Nigeria that someone doing same in America can be better off. Talking about immigrants and not first class citizens
MISTAICEY02288:

Oga thats a very big fat lie. In this present Naija, you can't get a 2bed apartment for that amount, except of course in an underdeveloped area. I was at Abuja recently to visit a family there. They are a young couple with 2 kids. Thay stay in a 2 bed apartment and they pay a milli per annum.

Also, i have been to America amd planning to finally relocate there. I was there for 6 months this year already and i know how life is there and know what Naija people there are achieving. Believe it or not, an ordinary salary earner or even a cab driver in America is far better than a bank manager here in Naija. After house rent, gas and electricity bills, Naija people over there still get to send money down home here and build houses and have investments here. That your assumption that a person doin normal job there can never build a duplex here till next 20 years is a big fat lie, make more research. You claim most Americans dont have up to 10k savings in theor account? You really more ignorant. Have you asked yourself this, the Americans people getting scammed of thousands of dollars through wire, dating etc, how do those people get those savings? There are lots of Americans with as much as between 100k to over 1milli savings in their accounts. Get ya facts right.

Also, even if we wanna assume "Okay, most Americans dont have up to 10k savings" dont you fink they might not feel the need to? Since they are earning their income constantly without getting owed like Naija Govt does and they get money to meet their needs at the right time cos payment is stable. Also, they feel its their country and no need saving up since they aint planning runnin to any other place. And also, they have everything within their reach e.g power supply, water, good roads, health care etc. A serious Naija citizen would feel the need to be saving up constantly cos he knows its not his country and he has to tie things down back home. Definitely, he would be saving every dime he has to spare and send down here to be getting projects done and investments set up.

Naija people in yankee with decent jobs are making waves here in Naija, get yo facts right and stop being ignorant.

you are wrong , ppl left nigeria basically to money in order to live a better life , but when they got there they now found out that it is far cheaper to live that better life in those places than return to nigeria and covert their dollars to huge naira. i know of someone who has stopped coming to nigeria for his vacations , he always complains that he spends 5 times the amount in vacationing in Nigeria than he will spend if he goes to countries like portugal and other places . he has since stopped going to nigeria , now he only tours round. what is the point of spending 7k dollars and yet you will still be hiding at home every 11pm , no light , no water, no security . baba when you leave naija you will understand what ppl are saying . even buhari and our governors dont allow their kids to live or stay in nigeria

Op ks quite wrong and funny at the same time. How does one on 80k want to rent 2bedroom? Averagely, people spend 1k on transport and lunch at wotk daily., thats about 30k monthly, then call bills, data, clothes, food, electricity, generator, gas, if you have a car, maintainance and fuel, little miscellaneous here and there.. its still funny how one wants to rent a decent 2bedroom after that

Your guy riding 2015 model car in yankee won't tell you the truth. Now brother that car was financed. He will be paying for that car for 6 yrs and he is most likely going to lose the car cos the payment keeps going up along with over $250 monthly for insuring a new model car. All na for pose, even rich Americans can't complete a car payment in five years. Learn to read and research for yourself before spreading lies a friend told you

Pidgin2 has definitely gone to recruit her fellow people who have been constantly rejected by Walter Carrington.

There's really no need to lie to ourselves.

While America is no bed of roses, someone doing menial jobs in America will definitely be well of than a regular banker in Nigeria even if the persona doing menial jobs spends his entire money in the US.

The fact that after paying taxes, one can get uninterrupted power supply, good roads, great food is enough to discountenance whatever arguments you have. In America, the dream is not necessarily to own a house there but to live a comfortable above average life. Here in Nigeria, the dream is to build a house, whether in Sango Ota, Mowe or one obscure village where you will probably be kidnapped, robbed or killed.

Let's not kid ourselves, really.

you still dont get it, yes they may not have the 10k in their account and the simple reason is they dont need it.
ppl are crazy about having huge cash in their bank accounts in nigeria as a security against poverty and to enjoy normal things of life . just like the question i raised earlier, even the craze to build a house all boils down to poverty because 90% of those rushing to build houses are doing so in order to stop paying landlords rental fees which they can no longer afford .
there are many ppl in usa who wont even think of building because with ease they can get a house on mortgage , and pay back with ease as long as you have a stable job

No single menial job is going to give you $3600 a month. That's what most people earn doing two or three jobs. The best you can get from a single menial job is probably $2,800 before tax. Brother you are still lost in the conversion illusion. With such amount you can't even afford a one bedroom apartment. You will need to share with a roommate. I guess the banker in Nigeria shared his three bedroom with 6 other persons?
Should you even be comparing bank managers in 9ja with Nigerians doing menial jobs in Yankee? There is no basis for comparison. A Nigerian out there who is hardworking understands that he's still gonna go back home to invest hence he saves in his Nigeria bank account with peace of mind. Nothing is working in 9ja o... Everything is wrong in 9ja from the way we think to the zero infrastructure /social amenities.

I also intend to relocate. Not that i live poorly, but the stress level is on overdrive, one could lose one's mind just walking around metropolitan areas like Lagos..The mental condition of many Nigerians are dilapidated due to the problems that surrounds... too much challenges, why won't they relocate? Many times, relocating takes place when they have saved enough funds, and not to seek greener pastures. The climes there are saner.

At least they can account for something at the end of the year, but unemployed graduates in Nigeria can't boast of menial jobs not to talk of White collar job. They are far more better than 80% of people living in Nigeria. They will never smell poverty again. I wish I have the opportunity to be there.

Americans would rather save like mad for a 4000 USD vacation.
They don't joke with that at all.
There's too much added stress in nigeria for the average Joe, no electricity, poor healthcare- sorry is your case of you fall ill, air pollution everywhere, all sorts of unmonitored dangerous processed foods, body creams that people use.
There's a reason the life expectancy of Nigerians is much lower than the Americans and other westerners. They live till old age, and actually live life. We just continue to hustle till death searching for what is lost.
In your comparisons, you should have compared a bank manager abroad to one in Nigeria, a Dr abroad to one in Nigeria, a manual worker abroad to one in Nigeria.

I totally agree with your submission. This is the smartest comment I've read on this thread
