Just like cassava it was brought from South America and only became a significant commercial export in the last 100 years.At any rate the market for cocoa is a relatively new one too. In 1898 there was no Nigeria.

Those other places were separate Colonies under ANOTHER British Governor General who produced reports just like this one.

So How were those places doing in 1898?

Apparently you had no clue that palm oil is a product along the Southern Forest belt and was not in exclusion to Ibo. From West to Midwest to South and East were palm oil plantations and rubber plantations. Mumu

The funny thing is how ignorant many of these dunces are .In1898 > The Colony of Lagos was merged with Southern Nigeria in 1906. The resultant entity was merged with Northern Nigeria in 1914.

So at the time of this report . Lagos was separate from the East. There were other reports for the Southern protectorate which excluded te Colony of Lagos .You can look for them.

Fact is Lagos as an international seaport predates Nigeria and was not built with Nigerian money

Cocoa is not an Indigenous African crop.
Cocoa was brought by Europeans from South America because of the similar weather not only to Nigeria but Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire this was later and farmers only responded to external demand by cultivating more land with it.


At the time of this report cocoa was not a significant cash crop.

Cassava too was brought by Europeans from the same place much earrlier and was cultivated more because people could eat it but had little local use for cocoa

The greater significance of the report here is the Customs and port revenues that Lagos was generating

bear in mind that this was in the earliest days of that port.

The point is the Port as a cash cow long before Nigeria existed so do not tell me it was built with Nigerian money
