Mr. man which UK? Is it not the same one that I'am staying?

Rent-£ 850 pcm
Internet (BT)-£30
Phone (EE) -£15
Tube (Oyster)-£161.84 monthly.
Renting fridge, microwave, washing machine & drier-£40
Utilities (SSE)-£150
Shopping-£400
Drycleaning-£30

That's a total of £1700 (almost 800,000 Naira!) And that's a very modest student lifestyle ooo, assuming you stay locked up in your crib with no enjoyment whatsoever.

To be honest, people are just managing in this fcukd up place.

See all your expenses and you still asking him if it's not the same UK you stay in? You are living a big man life in Yankee that is why you have no savings.

My friend stays in UK alone his rent is £500
His home has a mini fridge and where the hell do you rent a fridge, microwave etc?
What exactly are you shopping for £400 monthly? Didn't you see charity shops to buy cheap clothes for £2-£10?Don't you cook your food?
You spend £400 on shopping but don't want to buy a fridge and microwave that will save you money in the long run.

I don't think you live in the UK and if you do, this is a typical example of a broke Nigerian in Yankee. Go there and be forming big boy, don't save money and send here for investments.

Oga thats a very big fat lie. In this present Naija, you can't get a 2bed apartment for that amount, except of course in an underdeveloped area. I was at Abuja recently to visit a family there. They are a young couple with 2 kids. Thay stay in a 2 bed apartment and they pay a milli per annum.

Also, i have been to America amd planning to finally relocate there. I was there for 6 months this year already and i know how life is there and know what Naija people there are achieving. Believe it or not, an ordinary salary earner or even a cab driver in America is far better than a bank manager here in Naija. After house rent, gas and electricity bills, Naija people over there still get to send money down home here and build houses and have investments here. That your assumption that a person doin normal job there can never build a duplex here till next 20 years is a big fat lie, make more research. You claim most Americans dont have up to 10k savings in theor account? You really more ignorant. Have you asked yourself this, the Americans people getting scammed of thousands of dollars through wire, dating etc, how do those people get those savings? There are lots of Americans with as much as between 100k to over 1milli savings in their accounts. Get ya facts right.

Also, even if we wanna assume "Okay, most Americans dont have up to 10k savings" dont you fink they might not feel the need to? Since they are earning their income constantly without getting owed like Naija Govt does and they get money to meet their needs at the right time cos payment is stable. Also, they feel its their country and no need saving up since they aint planning runnin to any other place. And also, they have everything within their reach e.g power supply, water, good roads, health care etc. A serious Naija citizen would feel the need to be saving up constantly cos he knows its not his country and he has to tie things down back home. Definitely, he would be saving every dime he has to spare and send down here to be getting projects done and investments set up.

Naija people in yankee with decent jobs are making waves here in Naija, get yo facts right and stop being ignorant.
Oga calm down.
it all depends on the location. where I live here in Badagry, there's currently a one bedroom self contain for rent at just 6.5k monthly. the kitchen and bathroom are tiled, the walls painted, the rooms big enough.
I can't pay 250k a year for a two bedroom flat. it's outrageous. here in Badagry, 500k-700k would build you a mediocre house that you can even boast off to friends. some of my neighbors are vulcanizers, market women, petty traders etc. yet they all have homes to call theirs.

You don't live in Abuja. Don't mislead people who don't live here. I live here.

Kubwa? The least you can get a house around Deidei is 300k not to talk of Kubwa. Are you counting Deidei as part of Abuja?

Gwagwalada is nearly 60 kilometres away from Abuja. Who counts Gwagwalada as part of Abuja?

Abuja is Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, Jabi, Lifecamp, Gwarimpa, Mabushi, Katampe and the upcoming Lokogoma( Lokogoma minus the terrible roads).

I live here. Abuja cannot measure with any city in the USA but still has high house rent. Call a spade by its name; Nigeria is a country to get out of.
So if gwagwalada is not Abuja what is then, we re talking about where the almighty University of Abuja is located (old site ) before some departments were moved to the new site along airport road ,majority of the commercial activities taking place in Abuja north axis happens in gwagwalada b/cos of the university community.& u re saying gwagwalada is not part of Abuja, OK ooo.

The truth still remains that most developed places in Naija will never give out 2 bedroom apartment for 250k. You go ask around. And that you get cheap accommodations in Badagry doesn't mean all working class people should move to Badagry.

Most working class people in top cities in this Naija pay much more for nice apartments.

I had always wondered whether there is a subversive plot in the US dream that promotes debt as the binding glue to ensure people have little time to live life outside the defined stereotypes. School Loan, Car Loan, Wedding Loan, House Loan, Easy Credit to Children's education loan and then finally live off the IRA and 401k.

You haven't seen anything. People have been deceived, you will be shocked.
I know someone who left a great job and life in Nigeria and relocated with his family, now he is full of regrets. He can't return cause himself and wife resigned from jobs people are wishing for. Funny thing they are being fed now by relatives cause they aren't working though they are trying to get their documents. Great mistake, and he acknowledges it.

University of Abuja is located in a wilderness. That's one.

Two, if you know your geography well Gwagwalada is west of FCT. Bwari is the northern axis.

Three, Gwagwalada has the worst infrastructure in the whole of the FCT. You'll think you are in Okpoko (Onitsha) while walking Gwagwalada main streets.

I told you I live here. You can't survive here without lots of money unless you chose to live worse than people in the remote villages which means living in Gwari villages with next to no amenities.

Americans would rather save like mad for a 4000 USD vacation.
They don't joke with that at all.
There's too much added stress in nigeria for the average Joe, no electricity, poor healthcare- sorry is your case of you fall ill, air pollution everywhere, all sorts of unmonitored dangerous processed foods, body creams that people use.
There's a reason the life expectancy of Nigerians is much lower than the Americans and other westerners. They live till old age, and actually live life. We just continue to hustle till death searching for what is lost.
In your comparisons, you should have compared a bank manager abroad to one in Nigeria, a Dr abroad to one in Nigeria, a manual worker abroad to one in Nigeria.
Dis was my 1st observed reasonable comment on dis thread. very precise,.

going their without papers intact is a bad idea, your friend made an ignorant mistake! Before you relocate, it's best you have someone to help you settle there or you go alone there at first. It's even better if you did your masters or Bsc there, that will give you an edge on employment. They won't employ you with your naija degree. My pastor and his wife relocated to USA via Dvc lottery back then, the man was initially regretting the move seriously because all they had was a degree that isn't recognised. And he couldn't do odd jobs, but along the line both him and his wife found something doing and his wife started a nursing course. She's a Registered nurse now, and earns heavily. They built what we call a mansion somewhere in Enugu town within two years and are doing excellently. Don't say what you don't know, you only suffer in Yankee if you are illegal with no papers, if you have papers and you are legal the only thing holding you from working is choice. Your friend might regret the move now, but in 3 years he will understand he made the best decision for himself and family. Nigeria is hell!!! You won't know until you visit developed countries, to come back will give you high blood pressure.

even in many african countries. The standard of living is far better than nigeria. And secondly, there is something very funny about the way we africans or should I say nigerians see things. Why do ppl take house building as a sign or measurement of success? So once someone can build a house, iit means he is auccessful
my brother building a house is a major sign of success by all standards,if u doubt try putting up a structure,at least a three bedroom apartment u go know how far or is like u love paying rent to all those ungrateful landlord that doesn't know what it takes to gather this pepper (money).

I pay 24$ for gas that last me 4 days, so in a week, i pay around 40dollars for gas. My fiances car uses around 60$ per week (my car has better MPG then her car). Together, we make around 1700-2000$ per week. She pays more taxes than me.

We don't have mortgage yet. we renting an apartment

We buy clothes but we don't buy clothes every day or every month, Do you buy clothes every month?

We don't eat out, we already buy groceries. and even if we do, it is once in a while ( we spend less than 70$ most times)
We don't have any other means of transport, she uses her car, i use mine, sometimes, we switch cars.
She pays 45$ for her prepaid AT&T, I pay 30$ for my Tmobile per month
We have never see unexpected bills, it has never happened. She has insurance from her work that cost 7$ per week right now (taken from her paycheck). She is gonna add me to her insurance in few days once we make it official, the insiurance will rise to $30. She pays 100$ for her car insurance (it was increased from $70 when she got into an accident last year and the insurance company had to fix her car for her). I don't pay any for mine (in the state i live it is not required to have insurance if you own your car outright)
I do car maintenance once a while, it cost 34 dollarsNothing happened to my car since i have been driving it. That's why i bought a good car grin

And someone will believe this grin

If your car is not insured you will pay through your nose if the unexpected happens, as for clothes you might be thrifty hence you don't need to buy new clothes monthly, for others it is important. You are living off your fiancé hence you are relaxed, if she decides to handover financial upkeep to you as the man, you won't survive it.

It will take an American hustler 20yrs to save for a 20% downpayment for a house. Thats just 40kusd for an average $200,000 house. It will take him another 30yrs to pay back the loan of $160,000 excluding interest. Thats 50yrs to own a single house. Enough time for even a bricklayer and shoemaker to build two houses in Nigeria

Are you focusing on American or Nigerian immigrants in America. You generalize too much. American hustler? Where do you want to belong. If you want to remain an hustler then it could take you that long because an hustler's life is never stable. But if you are chanced to take the right steps and have a hood career then you can raise a down payment for a home in months. If one decide to complete mortgage payment it can be done sooner. It's a matter of choice.

I'm in London studying for a master's degree for a year. I'll be out of here by next August, 2018. Why on earth do I need to buy all those things for? Plus the trouble of shipping them back home once i'm done (who will buy them in UK?) It's cheaper to rent them, common sense!!

Your friend is lying to you. When people are paying £600 for room in a shared flat in Stratford? Abeg which kain place in London will you pay £500 and live alone? Not even Peckham sef.

I traveled to UK with the help of a friend who did visa for me whom I promised to pay once I find something doing. I arrived UK and after two months I got a menial job that pays me 1600$ a month. Now these are my expenses:
House rent per month 350$
Phone subscription for data 21$ unlimited
Food and beverage 150$
Bus ticket for one month to work 100$
After all other expenses I do save up to 800$ every month. Some months I do save 1000$
So please let be realistic about our analysis.
