Honestly, if you've seen how the west handle employment, you'll understand where he's coming from. They value and respect your time. And they dont make it seem like they're doing you a favour. I had the 3 stages interview for my current position over the phone, pre-recorded video interview, and Skype. And that's how most jobs are here. Especially if its a different province/state, they ask you if coming down would be a problem they're ready to schedule a skype or phone interview. And confirm your time availability. They're quite flexible. Cos they know you have a life too. Some of them only request to see you in person at the last stage and most would fund your travelling and accommodation. I know someone who recently got a Senior Manager position with one of the Big 4's here, she had all her interviews on Skype. And they considered her doing them more favour. That's value! That's respect! I pray Africa gets there someday. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

OboOlora: Same happened to me in a company in PH. Tge interviewers were surprised that i even came with my car. Instead of a proper interview, they were just doing job briefing. I rejected the offer afterwards because the amount they claimed ti have upped was still meagre to me. |

I am friend with this chap on Facebook. The guy is extremely good and attempts in more ways than one to reorient the typical Nigeria mindset that has kept us where we are as a people and as a nation. He is a positive spirit to the society. His acts are legendary. He is a teacher extraordinary. He is a jolly good fellow! Follow him on Facebook and you won't regret. |

OboOlora: A friend connected me for a job interview in PH. I was to go to the refinery, i was happy and enthusiastic about the whole thing so i booked a return flight from Abj. We were 2 from Abj. The other girl just finished NYSC. Interview date came, i met the other girl at the gate. We made a call to the contact, 2 hours later, we where still waiting at the gate. Finally we got a gate pass, we where asked how we were going to get there. Hmmmm, that was a big story. We walked and asked for directions and we realized we will walk for 2hrs to get to the office. Finally after another hour, a shuttle bus was sent to fetch us. That was when i realized it wasnt the refinery we were heading to but a construction site of a fertilizer plant. Another hr went by before she was called for interview in a general office by a young expatriate South Korean. When it was my turn, the guy seem like i shouldnt be there. He checked my cv over and over again without speaking much. His first question was how did i get here from Abj, i told him by flight and would return same way. He dropped my cv and began a casual gist, asking about my family status and why i wanted to leave my current employer for them. I knew the job wasnt mine, since it was obvious they needed a trainee and certainly not one who travels by air. During lunch, we had a chat with one staff who took us to their canteen, i asked him about the pay but he wanted to know my current pay, when i told him, he said this job is not meant for me. They still sent us for medicals and we left thereafter. She was called in a week but i never got nor expected their call and was not going to go even if they called. It wasnt cool how we waited trekked for an hr while dressed for an interview that turned out to be a contruction coy. I was soaked with sweat from the humidity of PH, that alone made me reject the offer even before the interview took place. |

The job isn't his. Twelve years after I was called for a job on a weekend (to start in two hrs time) which an acquaintance had rejected, I'm still there, and my salary has almost doubled. |

DONFASZY: What you get from a negotiation table depends on what you bring to the table.People treat you based on how you value yourself. Employers cash-in on potential employees' fears of losing the job and treat them as some lesser humans. Learn to show them what you get and they will show you some respect. You will get the job it is ever meant for you.Remember first impression lasts longer. |

adanny01:Lol, I feel you. It's a sad situation in Nigeria. We have too many people chasing a few jobs. As far back as 2010, I remember my former Boss at EM always boasting, 'do you know how many people will love to have your job for a quarter of your salary'? Now imagine 2017 when the situation is now worse! |

OboOlora:Your explanation is rather unclear. What do you mean by "you hit them, before they hit you?" Did the company offend you in the past or do you have a score to settle with them? I have learnt one thing in this life - never burn your bridges so badly, that you won't be able to use it as a means to communicate with others, or build relationships that might come in useful, much later on. Secondly, always take your exit in a dignified manner. If you had a better job offer from their competitor, before you resumed, it would have been better to let them know before hand, that you would not be able to take up the position they had earlier offered you. A friend of mine was once interviewed for a role in a multinational company. She did not get the job. But she managed to impress 2 members of the panel. One of them gave her his card and asked her to call a colleague of his, in another firm. She did, and was offered a job with a higher pay, than what she would have gotten in the first company that turned her down. She behaved with dignity and professionalism. And the tide turned in her favour, as that initial disappointment became a blessing in disguise. 3 Likes |
