University of Ibadan (UI) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, says the school remains proud of its high-flying graduates.

He said this at the opening of 2015/2016 convocation ceremonies, which began Monday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

University of Ibadan (UI) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, says the school remains proud of its high-flying graduates.

He said this at the opening of 2015/2016 convocation ceremonies, which began Monday in Ibadan, Oyo State.


“I am aware that there has been strident public criticism of the large number of first class graduates from our universities.

“We are exceedingly proud of all Ibadan graduates. We see this phenomenon from the strategic point of view of input-process-output.

“The University of Ibadan has arguably the most competitive mechanism for undergraduate admissions in the country.

“This has been attested to consistently by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in which Ibadan is the only university in the country ranked among the topmost 1,000 universities in the world,” the VC said.

He noted that for the very first time in 69 years, UI produced its first graduate with a First Class honours degree in History.

“We warmly congratulate Ozibo Ekele, who is graduating today with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.6 out of a maximum of 7.0″, the VC said.

Ozibo Ekele of the Department of History, was one of the 186 students who earned First Class degrees.

Olayinka said 5,629 students graduated in various academic programmes from 12 faculties, including the Distance Learning Centre at the convocation.

186 passed with first class honours, 1,538 finished with Second Class Upper, while 3,133 finished with Second Class Lower.

434 students finished with Third Class, while 81 others graduated with Pass degrees.

Breakdown of the graduating list showed that 3.5 per cent and 28.6 per cent finished with First Class and Second Class (Upper) honours, respectively.

In his valedictory speech on behalf of others, the overall best graduating student in Law, Tolulope Ogunmodede, attributed their successes to hard work and prayers.

The University of Ibadan belongs to an elite group of top 5%(or top 1000) Universities in the world and is better ranked than over 95% of institutions in the USA according to THE(2018) rankings which was unveiled in Kings College London on September 5, 2017.

I believe their Vice Chancellor is a product of the school. Because as far as this article is concerned the man has successfully said nothing.

He was only successful in beating about the bush.

He couldn't even give a reason. Just one.

Moreover, Certificate is just a paper work in Nigeria.

I remembered few years ago, i wanted to apply for Masters in the USA, i started my search for schools till i discovered there were 5,000 tertiary institutions alone in the USA, i later got to know that the University of Ibadan which i attended is ranked higher than 97% of these schools in the USA, though i lost interest in the post graduate studies but i can always attest to the performance of the University of Ibadan First Class Students, whether anyone likes it or not, the University selects the creme de la creme of Nigerian secondary students. The University started using a combination of WAEC and JAMB(Minimum of 200) to process admission ten years ago. In my department, you see majority of the students boasting of 9A1s, 8A1s and several distinctive results. What surprised me most was that in my final year, the department decided to admit 17 students into 100 Level, the least student had 7A1s, the representative of the HOD of Electrical Engineering said the students were the best crop in any undergraduate school in Africa, i believe those students constitute a chunk of the First Class in this graduating set.

If nothing else, he talked about THE ranking. All over the world, nothing validates academic standard like reputable rankings as such!

You are right. Out of the 5200 institutions in the USA only 200 makes top 1000(although 200 is a high number for any country) but majority of universities in the US can't smell top 1000 either. There are about 5 institutions in Nigeria(4 federal and 1 private) that would easily topple most American institutions when compared on research relevance. Nigerian lecturers like Gureje Oye, Adebiyi, Misra Sanjay and one guy called ubong or something from University of Uyo are even better rated than researchers from some of these so called western Universities.

For instance if you compare the score card of Coventry, UK and UI you would see that bought ought to fall within the same 600-800 band but UI has just 1% of foreign students and very low percentage of foreign staff. According to THE, ability of a University to attract foreign students and staff is an indication of d universities reputation and carries 7% hence UI would score very low on the International outlook metric forever. To score high on International outlook UI needs 19% of staff to be foreigners, 19% of students to be foreign students and high foreign research collavoration.

Some of the parameters are also stacked against African Universities especially the teaching and research reputation metric which carries 35% total score under THE. Under this one 18,000 top notch scientist/researchers are giving surveys to report which Universities that are the best in their field. Most of the Researchers are domiciled in USA, Europe and Asia so you have Nigerian Universities ranking very low on that one too.

Not withstanding, slightly higher than 67% of these graduands finished with a class of degree lower than upper. A university that claims to admit the creme de la creme of our society is expected produce graduates with higher class divisions than what we have presently. All in all, the applaudable change has come to stay.

Shout out to our OAU friends who take pleasure in suffering and dying in silence while their hard work is been swept under the carpet every semester. Your rewards are in heaven. Keep boasting of how a UI graduate will not survive in OAU, you're on your own.

Indeed many don't understand the ramifications of THE rankings on how their certificates are viewed and interpreted globally. Governments, Organizations etc look to THE rankings to value rankings. That's why even Tetfund wouldn't sponsor you to a University on scholarship that isn't ranked top 1000 on THE.

I believe the private universities forced the federal universities to change course on First Class issuance. UI, Unilag now understands that if they continue to limit the number of ppl graduating with good grades then they would end up with a crop of poor Alumni in the next decades because most graduates of private universities could saturate the private sector with their better results.

Although, private universities may have set the pace, I still believe only a few exceptional private schools like CU and co really pose a threat to government owned varsities and their graduates. Most private universities are still largely underfunded to compete with the average government owned schools and employers of labour are not oblivious of that.

True many private Universities are really underfunded. CU gets lots of money from her owners. But very soon Dangote University would be joining the fold of top notch private Universities and considering that Dangote would do most of his employment from there that would be a University even public Universities should watch out for.
