Reptiles need sunlight because they cant regularize there temperature like mammals, so inorder not to die of too much cold or too much heat, they have to hide under shade when extremely hot and have to lay in the sun to heat up their bodies when necessary

frm my knowledge, they are called cold blooded animals because they cant regulate their temperatures, so they use the sun to heat up and stay away from the sun when they are too hot
