MODERN DAY SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING:COERCED INTO CAPTIVITY EVEN IN A STATE OF FREEDOM.
✍©Tope Omogoroye

Listening to the lachrymatory memoir of Mr victory an edo man, while being interviewed by the CNN investigative journalists,he gave a vivid account of how he forsook his comfort zone, hoping to meet up with greener pasture in a foreign land and how he ended up being sold into slavery,he said he did journey through the desert, payed the 'people smuggler' so as to seek assistance in crossing and journeying through the Mediterranean sea to the european shore(a route described as one of the deadliest routes on earth). After getting to libya and meeting with his supposed smuggler he was thrown into a detention facility, robbed of his belongings, tortured, starved and left for close to eight months that looked like years before being publicly auctioned and committed to forced labour. The most poignant part is that tens of thousand Africans are made to suffer similar plight on an African soil and by a fellow African and with no doubt some other gullible persons who i think might also be influenced by hypnotism of some sort will still end up in same similar state.
Reports from the recently rescued returnees who were over a thousand pointed out that they drink mostly urine or fuel so as to stay alive and not die of thirst,at this point i will want to use this opportunity to commend the State Government of Edo State for their programmes and effort in trying to integrate the returnees back to the social settings and order. The question might come to one's mind, why Libya out of all African countries, libya has been disorganized, and has witnessed series of civil wars, riots, and uprisings ever since the U.S backed forces(NATO) overthrown Gaddafi under the administration of Barrack Obama,an operation which was spare-headed by the then U.S secretary Clinton, ever since then Libya has remained unstable both politically and socially, with almost all citizens carrying firearms about, and also their security forces is nothing to write home about thats only if it functions,so libya became the easiest traffickable route to European territories, as it is commonly said 'opportunity provides the thief',the criminally minded barbaric citizens saw opportunity of getting rich by the enslavement of their fellow Africans and they seized it.This is an act that is highly condemnable Crime against humanity and punishable under international law of United Nations constitution section 4 of it which states that “no one should be held in slavery or servitude, slavery in all of its forms should be eliminated.”

But the colloquy and confabulation is all about slavery in Libya, thereby leaving out the fact and actuality of the practice of modern slavery in different forms on our own very Nigerian soil.Hon Femi Gbajabiamila who also doubles has the majority leader of the house of reps during the house of assembly probing into the case of slave trade, cited cases were young people who are supposed to be in school become victims of modern day slavery and are made to serve the societal elites as house helps, this is a very common practice in Nigeria,as most well to do Nigerians get teenager from the age of 10-19 to serve as house helps. To those who are familiar to this system they may able to relate how it works,to get an house help in nigeria, you first get in touch with an agent who will scout for teenagers in rural communities, charge agency fee, agreement fee,and commission fee, brings up to 5-10 teenagers to the supposed master so as to pick his choice, the picked one now begin a journey of forced labour, denied education, in most cases starved and tortured and they are being paid around 4-10 thousand naira pay month, and let it be noted that this payment is made to the agent who brought the house help, let the truth be told, this is a form of modern slavery and it should be condemned at all levels of the society, at a period when we teenagers should be committed to an educational institutions better off peoole commit us to forced labour. We have seen and heard cases where a young teenager girl was forcefully given to marriage in exchange for payment from a man,or the kidnapping of young ladies who will be turned to sex slaves,on February 8,2008,Daily trust newspaper reported a case where The 'anti human trafficking piracy special Investigation unit' of the FCT police command has so far rescued 105 teenagers between the ages of five to thirteen years from human traffickers, in different places in Abuja. He said the children were trafficked from Nassarawa, Lagos, Kano, Kwara and some villages within the FCT to be used as sex slaves and child labourers within the Motor Parks, Markets and restaurants in Abuja, which contravenes section 19 of the 'Trafficking Act in Persons'.

There are some people in our communities who run orphanage home for the sole purpose of child traffickings, people are approached asking them to hand over their children and they promise to provide them best of education and more favourable environment, but upon getting to their destination these children are ttafficked, people are being kidnapped and later on smuggled out of the country and given into slavery.
With all this paradigm and precedent citations am only trying to ratify and verify the fact that as Nigerians we are not only confronted by modern slavery outside our entity but also bedeviled by slavery in our homes.

It is time all relevant agencies and concerned person come out in full force and approach it synergistically with all security forces, for failure to do so is like putting planting a time bomb inside a home and having all the family members sit in,lets fight today for tomorrow's freedom and as human right organisation, the A.U nd the F.G.N are rescuing and bring back stranded Nigerian, the internal forces and marketers of modern day slavery should not be neglected, it is a time this heartless and barbaric creatures be brought to book.
