It depends, poison is nothing but a chemical compound. Any chemical can be regarded as poison.
Expiration of a poison is basically the failure of the chemical or physical structure of that compound/poison.
So if the compound decomposes or reacts further, depending on the element of nature it reacts with,we will get a new compound that may remain poisonous(of the same or different scale of toxicity),or be rendered absolutely harmless.

Since poison was meant to eliminate, expiring would mean unable to perform the function effectively again

On the contrary, taking an overdose of sleeping pills is an excruciating way of dying.

I'm not a chemist, but intuition demands that a poison is a mixture of chemicals. Overtime, they wear off, thereby weakening the potency of such a poison. Thus an expired poison would take a longer time to kill the victim... With a higher percentage of survival than a potent poison... Which kills within the expected time frame

How would you like your liver shutting down while your nerves slowly stop functioning simultaneously? Or picture yourself trying to control every breath in order not to suffocate at the same time trying to control the multiple spasms you'll be getting. That's how excruciating it can be. Worst part is; you are likely to survive the ordeal(most people do) but with little or no liver left.

Overdose is not a glamorous sleep as portrayed in movies. There's nothing subconscious about it, you're fully awake to feel it to the very last minute.

It is worse and it is very very terrible.

First, your throat begins to tighten and your mouth goes completely dry.

Then your heart begins to pound heavily like someone inside you in trying to break your heart with a sledgehammer. Like you are having a heart attack.

Then your whole central nervous system shuts down, you can feel your body, your muscle shutting down. You know your life is slipping away right before you, but the worst part is you are fully awake!

Because your body is trying to stay alive, it would react by trying to eject those pills from your stomach. Next thing is for you to start vomiting vigorously. Your stomach will hurt like hell and your body will try hard to eject those pills through your already tightened throat. Guess what you will most likely be puking........ Mucus!

Next is for you to go through multiple seizures. Crazy painful epileptic seizures, where you are probably shitting yourself and convulsing at the same time.

Then because your brain is denied of oxygen, it begins to close down. There is a very strong likelihood you will suffer severe brain damage.

Guess what again, most people who try to kill themselves from sleeping pills overdose eventually survive the ordeal. But they are left with worse scars(damaged brain, liver, kidney) that it is better they were dead.

Very apt, chemical decomposing forms other compound ,it's either it downgrades the potency of the original compound or transform to a more dangerous and powerful compound.

Cyanide, sulphur compounds ,are very good examples of poisons
