Supervises (Function): Mental Health Counselors

Main Purpose
Participate in the planning, supervision and coordination of mental health and psychosocial related services in the project in accordance with MSF standards in order to provide the most appropriate mental health support for patients.

Accountabilities

Plan, coordinate and supervise all daily MH activities, in close collaboration with the MHAM and other medical team members in the project, to ensure efficient implementation of the resources needed while maintaining high levels of quality in MH activities in accordance with MSF protocols.
Carry out mental health evaluations for psychotic patients, establishing a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Inform the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow, referring patients to other health professionals, whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition.
Provide the most appropriate mental health support for patients and other clients in need
Actively participation in psychological support to HIV/TB patient in our cohort to ensure adherence to our program
Ensure the effective implementation of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocols by identifying possible victims of SGBV, referring them to the medical team to receive the necessary treatment as well as follow up psychosocial support.
Facilitate clinical counselling supervision, in collaboration with the MHAM, to the mental health counsellors providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family and group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions.
Identify the training needs of the counsellors, staff members and other resourceful persons in the project and then in collaboration with the MHAM, plan and facilitate trainings to enhance the scope of MH activities.
Collect and compile statistical and monitoring data linked with MH activities, reporting to the MHAM and the PRM on a regular basis.
Coordinate the activities of counselling services with other relevant actors and liaise with local counterparts (like MoH, WHO, ICRC and other INGOs) on mental health matters including referral services.
Inform the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective.
Ensure that all patient related information and files are kept confidential.

Requirements
• Education: • Essential degree or diploma in Psychology
• Experience: • Essential 2 years’ experience minimum as a Psychologist.
• Desirable previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries.

• Languages: • Mission language essential. Local language desirable: hausa and kanuri.

• Knowledge: • Desirable computer literacy (word, excel and internet).

Main Purpose
Facilitate counseling support and/or psycho-education sessions to patients and their caregivers, following different medical and mental health MSF protocols and procedures, in order to improve their psychosocial wellbeing.

Accountabilities

Work closely with the clinical teams to identify the psychosocial, socio-economic and administrative needs of patients undergoing treatment.
Actively promote Mental Health Activities within the hospital while facilitating individual and/or group counselling sessions, basic psycho-educational sessions and psychostimulation to patients and their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.
Refer patients to other specialists (psychologist or doctor) or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary, in order to propose the best support available.
Keep a record of all patients offered psychosocial support as well as statistics of daily activities while also participating in team meetings to share experiences and discuss special cases with other counsellors, preserving confidentiality.
Work closely with patients in the hospital to identify other support systems available within the community for linkages and to ensure continuity of care.
Take active part in trainings, supervisions and support the mental health activities supervisor, where necessary, in doing sensitization for MSF staff or external partners about mental health/psychosocial issues.
Discuss difficulties and/or challenges arising from counselling sessions or from day to day activities with supervisor.
Screen all new returnees/ escapees for mental health status.
Conduct the pre and post-test counselling for HIV.
Follow up with the patient in the programme to know when to close the case`s folder.
Do the attachment evaluation between the beneficiaries and caretakers in IPD paediatric.

Requirements
• Education: • Counseling, social work, psychology or other similar degree/diploma
• Experience: • 1 year experience essential. Experience with NGO desirable.

• Languages: • Local language essential (haussa, kanuri). Mission language desirable.
