Car Gurus In The House Please Help! What Can Be The Cause? by JoshuaSG(op): 12:48pm On Dec 31, 2017
Expert in the house pls help suggest what to do.
I use a Golf3wagon (1.8 engine type) which I bought in Oct 2015.
I bought the car belgium. At the time of purchase, the catalyst has been tampered with and i even doubt if the O2 sensor function well, yet the car has excellent fuel economy.
From my house2work is 52km.
To&fro is 104km and i go to work 6 times/week.
My full tank (67 ltrs) takes me to work 7times (728km). Everyday i spent an average of #2500 on fuel.
But this stat had changed since i replaced d engine in Oct this year(2017). The former engine brokedown due2d removal of d oil filter while on motion.
At present, my full tank now takes me to work 5times. On d 6th trip, it will empty while on d way bak home. I now spend an averege of #3500(at #143/L-the best NNPC statn in ABJ) on fuel everyday. From my records i now spend additional #21,392 on fuel every month. This has become unbearable4me.
Pls note dis:
1 the present (new) engine, speed normal like d former wit gud sound, no hesitation and it fire well (no smoke) in d exaust&on d plugs.
2 the new engine was bought( skeleton) i.e without d carbrator which means i use d carb of d former engine.
3 the fmr&d new engines re both 1.8l type but d manifold of d present (new) engine is bigger than that of the former.
4 my mechanic&electrician have tried their best but no solution. I didn't allow them touch the airflow meta in d carbrator since it was d same settings that gave me d gud fuel economy b4 d change of engine.
May God reward u for every helpful comment u give.

Scan the car and check for fault code regarding the air fuel parameters.

in a saner clime where you have good road network and transport system you don't need to drive your self to work on regular bases

at the bolded, the bigger manifold is a reflection of the size of the piston and rings which requires more energy/fuel for combustion for greater performance

Tanx alot, dis is wot i had suspected but my meco&d electrician seem not to understand d theory in d point u raised. They both told me whether big or small manifold, d 1.8 engines consume d same fuel. Instead, they suggested i buy new carbrator which i declined.
So pls do u think replacing d present manifold with a smaller one will improve d fuel economy?
Golf3 1.8 engine manifold(whether big or small) cost just #3500 which i tink i can afford. And again d big&small manifolds work in place of eachother.
Tank u all4d time sacrificed.

How come they are both 1.8L if you looking at the inlet manifold theory

Unfortunately, some mechanics have caused unsuspecting car owners to replace a complete engine owing to their incompetency

Golf 3 got about 5 difference types of 1.8 engines and each with a specific function to the rest

these are; Golf3 1.8 ABS/ACC/ADZ/ANP and 1.8 Turbo

if you need fuel economy replace it with 1.4 engine which will cost you petrol of not more than #2,000 naira for the same distance

the original manifold of the engine must not be tampered with otherwise you will be creating a problem where there is none
