Kola Studios

Daniel Okalany

Serving as both CEO and Lead Developer, Uganda-based Kola Studios was co-founded by Daniel Okalany, and the studio develops mobile games for the Android and iOS operating systems. “Initially, we started the business in my home. It’s very common in Africa for people to play traditional card games and we make these games available on mobile,” he said in an interview with CNN. The game that Okalany is referring to is Matatu, a two player card game based on a popular local game of the same name – but developed for smartphones. Okalany graduated with a degree in Computer Science, but while in high school, he learnt to program, which ultimately led to him buying his first PC at the age of 21.

MATATU, the local Ugandan Gaming app by Kola Studios celebrates 200,000 downloads on Google play store.

“200,000 game downloads on Google Play store, 90,000 monthly active users, 45,000 weekly active users , 20,000 daily active users and 600,000 games played per day. Each daily active user spends an average of 27 minutes per day in the game ”

This thread is excellent. I can't even say anything other than it is what I have saying all along. Sango the Yoruba King is the most worshiped and known king in all the African world including Diaspora, Caribbean, Brazil, Africans in America, Canada. Yoruba is probably the most spoken African language and celebrated culture. Its no disrespect to others though, far from it, many African cultures are just as sophisticated but were badly hurt by slavery and colonialism.

To all the Yoruba folks engaging these ibo and Igbos to desecrate this thread, you are all enablers and co-conspirators to destroy this thread.

They are obvious bitter because their own thread died already and all they are trying to destroy and kill this thread just like theirs so why allow them to do that.

They'll go away if you ignore them, but they will remain if you keep going back and forth with them so why is it so hard to ignore them?

Do you think they are here to help this thread? No, they want to destroy it because they don't want to accept defeat.

@Deomelo
@All

I agree with the post above! In addition I'd
like to state these facts below...

If any FAKE Nairaland moniker begins
to derail any thread with ethnic insults
or defamation of character, PLEASE hit
the "Report" button at the bottom of every
"Off-topic" post! grin

State the reasons for "Reporting" the Internet
Troll, and that will take the "Winds" out of
ANY Troll's sails, instead of responding to
them. I do this a lot on Nairaland instead of
responding to them as it saves time. I've been
using NL since 2005 and I can say this is
one of the best ways to control them
BUT it is not yet absolutely foolproof!

In the alternative, send a mail to the Super Mod
from the bottom of the NL home page to
REPORT specific FAKE NL monikers that
engage in ethnic insults and Internet Trolling!

The use of free throwaway emails such as gmail, hotmail etc, to
register new NL accounts is what has led to
the presence of many Internet trolls on NL and
I think if people are made to register/reregister with
their mobile phones [One new or existing Nairaland account LINKED
to ONLY one mobile phone/SIM] and get an instant registration
code from Nairaland, for FINAL account activation, this would help to
clean up NL of these deeply annoying trolls/FAKE monikers
and help to attract more quality users and advertisers
on NL. @Seun can implement this
in 2018, because it seems to me the Mods
will NOT be able to keep up with monitoring
all the annoying FAKE monikers. There is one
moniker that I saw claiming to be a "female Yoruba Muslim" and posted insults online by derailing threads with hate messages
but moniker user is actually of S/E origin because I saw
the obviously "male" creator of the fake moniker
speaking concentrated Ibo to another troll
in a previous posts/threads this year... and that is how they have
been running rings round Nairaland's
"security architecture."

All the best to those who have contributed
to this thread so far! smiley

We are silent achievers without any air of arrogance, but we are proud of our culture and heritage.

This is undoubtedly the thread of of year on NL. Kudos to all contributors that celebrated sons and daughters of oduduwa and omoluabis for their achievements and for making Yoruba and Nigeria proud.

Nigeria Refining Push Prompts $3.6 Billion Petrolex Plan
By Emele Onu

December 6, 2017, 2:02 AM PST Updated on December 6, 2017, 5:45 AM PST

Plant in Ogun state will have 250,000-barrel-a-day capacity

Government seeking to end petroleum-product imports in 2 years

Nigeria is set to get another new oil refinery as a government push to end fuel imports attracts investors to the industry.

Petrolex Oil & Gas Ltd. plans to build a $3.6 billion plant with a capacity of 250,000 barrels a day, Chief Executive Officer Segun Adebutu said in an interview in Lagos. The closely held company is working on the “front-end engineering design” and will complete construction in 2021, he said.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil-producing nation, doesn’t have adequate refining capacity and imports at least 70 percent of its needs. A government pledge to end such purchases in the next two years by building local capacity has lured investors including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, who is constructing a 650,000-barrel-a-day refinery. Meanwhile Saipem SpA and other international companies are in talks to rehabilitate the country’s three existing plants.

Petrolex, whose CEO started an oil and fuel trading business about 12 years ago, has also built a storage-tank farm and other “mid-stream infrastructure” for $330 million, Adebutu said Dec. 4. The inauguration of the tank farm and the start of refinery construction -- both at the same site in Ibefun, Ogun state -- is planned for this month.

The tanks are connected to a pipeline at Mosimi, which will transport products around the country, according to the CEO, who sees a big market in Nigeria’s 180 million-strong population. Petrolex will finance the refinery project with loans from Nigerian banks and international lenders, as well as its own revenue, he said.

The company also plans a fertilizer plant and lubricants facility as well as a liquefied petroleum gas plant, Adebutu said.

Petrolex is targeting listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in the next 10 years to ensure the business “outlives its owners” and can fund future expansion, according to Adebutu. “By the next five years we would have achieved a significant amount of our ambition, then begin strategy talks with the stock exchange.”

The company’s current workforce is about 3,000 and Adebutu expects to employ about 10,000 people directly by 2021 when all the energy projects will be “up and running.”

The Yoruba language too is up there!

Well ladies and gentlemen, our poll to find the world’s sexiest language has finally come to a close. So what is the world’s sexiest language? What are the sexiest languages per region? While some of the languages on this list may not surprise you, some of them certainly will. The winners, according to popularity are:

1. French
2. British English
3. English
4. Arabic
5. Spanish
6. Samoan
7. Italian
8. Yoruba
9. Thai
10. Tahitian

However, when we calculated the sexiest language according to region, the list turns into:

• North America: English
– Known for being the mutt of all languages, English has developed into a complex and beautiful creation that borrows the precision of German, the intensity of Latin, and the refiner of French.

• South America: Spanish
– The language of a never dying love contains the vocabulary and rhythm that can make any person swoon.

• United Kingdom: British English
– The accent of sophistication and of incredible depth, the British English contains sounds that can adjust itself into any position.

• Western Europe: French
– Usually considered the suave and most cultured of the Romantic languages, French is as soft as silk and feels as warm as a lover’s stroke.

• Western Europe: Italian – Known for its poetic nature, Italian is the language of passion and fun, making this language addictive.

• Africa: Yoruba – With percussive intensity and syllables that sound like everyone is singing, Yoruba massages your ears into ecstasy.

• Pacific Islands
: Tahitian - With its warmth and voluptuous sounds, Tahitian is the sound of gold coming to embrace you.

• Asia: Thai
– Soft spoken, fun loving, and happy-go-lucky, the rich textures of Thai make this language incredibly seductive.

Thanks to your help, Day Translations has been able to search for the world’s sexiest languages in the world! While some of us are not surprised that French turned out to be the sexiest language of all, one can’t help but wonder: What makes a language sexy? And what is it about French?

According to Dr. Nigel Armstrong, a lecturer in French and sociolinguistics at the University of Leeds, there is nothing in the accent that makes French sexy or unsexy. In fact, the same could be said for any language that is included on our list. No language is inherently sexy, for accents and languages are merely sounds that follow an organizational structure. The reason why we think French or a particular language is sexy is much more interesting.

As Dr. Armstrong states, the sexiness of an accent or a language is due to our social and cultural backgrounds. Several surveys have been conducted on similar linguistic phenomena. People, depending on where they have grown up and with what they have been taught as normal, are prone to holding opinions that their culture holds. For centuries, the French have had the stereotype of being stylistic, cultured, suave, and most of all, sexy. Yet why the French?

Generally, the persons who are the most favorable of the French tend to live in a Western culture. This come as no surprise when you consider the numerous polls that have studied attractiveness and sexiness tend to be taken in either the United Kingdom, or the United States. Seeing how both nations are fairly similar in contrast to say, Canada and Indonesia, the polls tend to have the same responses. It is not terribly surprising that Italian, British English, and French show up in every poll about sexy languages.

What is interesting though, is the fact that our poll happens to include a more varied population. As you can see, Arabic, Samoan, and even Yoruba have made it in to the top ten. Has the West ever considered the sexiness of Tahitian? Have we ever even paid much attention to the Yoruba language? Maybe it’s about time that we start to dig a little deeper into other cultures and learn about what makes them so sexy. Who knows, maybe Thai is truly the sexiest language. We just need to study the culture a little more.

My full name is igbo but the short spelling looks Yoruba, except that the intonations are different. In fact, there is a popular Yoruba actor that goes by that name. smiley

Thanks to everyone who have/has contributed immensely to this thread.

Do we have real world entrepreneurs among the posters here? Since this thread is about showing the entrepreneural and innovative strength of the yoruba people, I don't think it is wrong to discuss business or the birth of a new company.

Please I might need your help to discuss something I am working on. Though it migh be an off topic but I would plead with everyone here oblige me.

There's no disputing the facts of this thread.

I am in America and I've come to find this out to be very true that Yoruba people are the most industrious, prosperous and most educated African people on Earth.

This is the rise of Nigeria as a great empire state that would benefit all of West Africa and beyond. How could it be a bad thing? Sometimes this silly rivalry is taken way, way, way, too far with Nigerians. Like the other day, Twitter explodes over which women look the best between Igbos and Yorubas? That's silly. They are both Nigerian women and there's very little difference in the bloodlines after all these centuries of mixing. ToLet acquires Jumia House in Nigeria

In what is likely the most interesting acquisition deal in the history of Nigerian internet startups, online property classifieds platform, ToLet just recently announced its acquisition of Jumia House for an undisclosed amount.

Why is the acquisition interesting? It is barely a year ago since ToLet raised just over a million dollars in its Series A funding round. Jumia House on the other hand, is a subsidiary of a billion-dollar company.

This raises the question of how ToLet was able to finance such an acquisition. By additional financing from an investor, it turns out.

According to the press release Techpoint received, the acquisition is in conjunction with their existing investor — Frontier Digital Ventures (FDV) — and will merge the two platforms over the coming months, under the new name of PropertyPro.ng.

Currently with over 60,000 property listings, ToLet will be adding Jumia House’s 22,000 listings, traffic, staff and other assets to its portfolio.

Interestingly, FDV has also acquired Jumia House in two other markets where it is in direct competition with its portfolio companies meQasa (Ghana) and AngoCasa (Angola). All of this is apparently in an attempt to strengthen its portfolio in the three African markets.

MainOne and Tizeti Partner with Facebook to Improve Internet Connectivity in Lagos Nigeria

MaineOne is a Yoruba-owned company

MainOne (www.MainOne.net) and Tizeti (www.Tizeti.com) today announced the completion of a joint development project with Facebook (www.Facebook.com) to enable the expansion of internet services in Lagos. This partnership will leverage MainOne’s fiber connectivity, Tizeti’s twenty brand-new solar-powered towers, and Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi. As a result of this project, internet services will be more accessible across Lagos Mainland including Ajao Estate, Surulere, Ikeja, Omole, Magodo, Gbagada, Oworonshoki, Bariga, Anthony Village, Ogudu, Ojota, Ketu and Alapere.

Speaking on the partnership, Chief Executive Officer, Tizeti, Kendall Ananyi, said, “Access to fast and reliable unlimited Wi-Fi connectivity has been a problem for most Nigerian residential customers and small businesses for too long. This partnership aims to demonstrate a sustainable and cost-effective solution to the under-served areas of Lagos State through our solar-powered, always-on Wi-Fi towers, and robust internet bandwidth from MainOne.”

Tizeti has built and will operate the solar-powered Wi-Fi Towers across Lagos while MainOne will provide multiple Gbps internet bandwidth to the outdoor towers via a mix of fiber-optic and microwave backhaul connections. This internet service will be delivered to end users via Wi-Fi, including via Express Wi-Fi hotspots deployed by Tizeti in Lagos. This partnership supports the three partners’ shared goal of connecting more people to high quality internet services in the most cost-effective way.

MainOne’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Funke Opeke, lauded Tizeti and Facebook’s commitment to improving the quality and lowering costs of Internet services in Lagos. Commenting on the partnership, she added “This project leverages our Internet capacity, investment in terrestrial fiber-optic infrastructure and points of presence for service delivery across Lagos State. We’re committed to improving the quality of access and accelerating the digital transformation of small businesses.”

Ibrahima Ba, Facebook Connectivity Programs, said, “We are committed to working with partners across Africa and elsewhere to support connectivity initiatives and develop better internet infrastructure in communities that lack reliable and affordable access.”

West Africa’s premier Connectivity and Data Center Solutions Company, MainOne has reinforced its commitment to building out West Africa’s Data Center capacity at the Data Center Africa Summit taking place at the DataCloud Europe 2017 conference in Monaco this week. During the event, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Funke Opeke was nominated as one of 50 top influencers transforming the data center and cloud landscape in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

The DataCloud Europe conference which has attracted over 1800 Data Center and Cloud executives from more than 60 countries as well as over 90 exhibiting companies, is the foremost networking event for data center players in EMEA.

During the conference, Gbenga Adegbiji, General Manager of MainOne’s MDXi Data Centers, joined an expert panel on the Africa Data Centre Leadership to discuss strategies for achieving improved Data Center and Cloud penetration across the continent. The panel started with a review of the challenges of Data Centers across the continent in comparison to other markets, highlighting low demand as the biggest constraint, due to offshore data hosting of content. With improved access to Internet services on the continent, leading content providers are finding that the high latency experienced with serving Africa from offshore does not effectively engage the market and have started establishing beachheads for content in data centers on the continent.

In his comments, Adegbiji asserted that despite the limitations, the opportunities for data center growth are enormous given the upsurge in the use of ICT services and mobile broadband, the migration towards a digital economy with Internet underpinning a lot of services across the region, better adoption of e-Governance, e-Health and e-Commerce initiatives and businesses looking to host their growing digital information locally. According to him, MainOne is anticipating the growing demand and has started building its second Tier III+ data center in Sagamu, a blooming industrial cluster in South-West Nigeria.

Adegbiji also highlighted MainOne’s efforts at improving transit traffic in Nigeria with its partnership with the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), and its new interconnection service OpenConnect, which facilitates increased interconnection, collaboration and peering for telecom operators, ISPs and content providers within its data center. According to him, this service would enhance local internet performance, lower costs and minimize traffic bottlenecks for Internet traffic in Nigeria.

Also on the Africa Data Centre Leadership Panel were the President, Schneider Electric, Francophone Africa, Paul-François Cattier; Managing Director, BCX Nigeria, Dr Ayo Adegboye; Managing Director, Rack Centre Nigeria, Ayotunde Coker; Founder and CEO, icolo[dot]io, Ranjith Cherickel and Director General Group, Orange Africa, Fatoumata Dieng.

In its 6+ years of operation, MainOne has established a strong reputation as the preferred provider of connectivity and data center solutions in West Africa. The company owns and operates MDXi Data Center; the only Tier III certified colocation facility in West Africa with combined PCI DSS, ISO 27001 and 9001 certifications.

The facility has been recognized at several awards since inception and in 2015 received the Customer Value Leadership Award from Frost and Sullivan in recognition of best practice in the Nigerian Data Centre Industry. MainOne’s MDXi is also a finalist in the 2016 Datacenter Dynamics (DCD) EMEA Internet Data Center category award.

Kn23h, my warmest appreciation goes to you! cheesy When you started this thread, it was like a joke - a little battle of wits to put some braggarts in their place. But it has grown in leaps and bounds. It surpassed my expectations. When I started contributing to the discourse, it was just a nice way to pass the time. But then the stories of the founders and entrepreneurs inspired me. wink

Along the line, I stumbled on a few companies whose services caught my attention, and I thought I should probably find out if I could offer some of my products and services to them. I contacted 11 of them, 6 responded, and at the tail end of last year, I made good progress with 4 already. By the end of the first quarter, we should be signing the contracts, God willing!! cheesy Kn23h....I owe you a debt of gratitude! Honestly, may God bless you on all sides, in cash and kind. I hope one day to translate this gratitude into something more substantial. Thank you again and again! cool
