In urban and regional planning, the idea of building up (skyscrapers) is discouraged because of inaccessibility, pollution and other negative impact on the environment. Except for lack of land and the display of human capabilities as regards to mega engineering constructions, there's nothing to be proud of here.

I still appreciate these countries who've made a way for themselves where there's no way.

There is no European city on the list.
Also the most liveable cities in the world like Vancouver, Melbourne. Zurich, Vienna et al are all absent from the list.

I love skyscrapers though.

I love skyscrapers though.

Protection of the environment is top priority for most Europeans. Heck, laws are put in place to discourage clustering of the environment in the name of development/skyscrapers.

Even though Australia and new Zealand have similar European mentality on environment, their's is majorly propelled by vast land in the continent. And so, why waste money to build up, when you can save the environment and avoid risk by building sideways.

I've been to a couple of the cities listed. They have no land to expand to, so they expanded upwards. Its cheaper to expand upwards in such places, but it's very expensive to do so in places where there's enough land and strict environmental laws.

Even New York with all her skyscrapers made sure it has green parks as large as the city itself. Same with Singapore.

Lagos is endangered. A quarter of the structures in Lagos has to be brought down. It has to be converted to green parks and waterways.
