The Vice Chancelor of Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Lagos, Prof. Muheez Durosinmi, has lamented the inadequacy of medical doctors in the country.

He said Nigeria had yet to attain the recommendation of the World Health Organisation of one doctor per 600 hundred patients.

He said it would take the country about 100 years to meet up with the WHO’s recommendation.

Durosinmi, who said the country presently operated on one doctor to 6,000 patients, claimed that about half of the population of Nigerian registered doctors were in diaspora.

The university don, who spoke at the inauguration of the governing council of the institution, said only 35,000 out of the 73,000 registered Nigerian doctors were practising in the country, while the remaining had travelled abroad for greener pasture.

“Nigerian doctors are well trained; when our doctors go abroad, they are recognised. The downturn of the economy has made government not to employ the required number of doctors; we have a lot of medical graduates that are still looking for job.

“On the list of the medical and dentist council, we have a total of 73,000 members, only 35,000 are practising in the country; the rest are in diaspora. The current system cannot absorb them and we have so many government hospitals that can’t be proud of adequate number of doctors “.

Asserting that Nigerian doctors are well trained and among the best in the world, the vice chancellor said a lot of them were unemployed, adding that both federal and state governments were not ready to employ them.

Durosinmi, a former chairman of Faculty of Pathology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, said additional institutions that would produce qualify doctors must be established for the country to meet the WHO standard.

Also speaking at the occasion, chairman of governing council, Prof. Akanni Hussein, attributed the problem in the health sector to structural defect, adding that Nigerian doctors performed well abroad.


Hussein, a former vice chancellor of Lagos State University, also pointed out that government interference in the management of university should be discontinued, saying there should be academic freedom for universities.

In his opening remarks, the founder of the university, Dr Ayodele Ibraheem, said he established the school because of his love for his people.

Ibraheed stated the institution was meant purely for academic pursuit, adding that student union activities would not be allowed.

Btw I am really glad Nigeria is liberalising Higher Education. We now have a Private University in Lagos only committed to Medicine, a Private University in Tinapa to focus on Marine/Naval Archi/Ship Building-this is definitely the way to go.

If we can't maximally fund education and research then we should allow the private bodies take up that responsibility-it is a Win-Win for Nigeria; More Jobs, More NGO funding on Research, More spaces for students in Nigeria.

They are highly and regularly paid over there. They don't need to strike or protest before getting the dividends of their labour. I will never blame them.

What do you expect when the best of where we can actually get advanced medical fellowships, residency education and research growth opportunities is beyond the shores of Nigeria and even Africa? What do you expect when our medical institutions are not equipped to battle the illnesses that plague a nation? What do you expect when our medical teams are not drilled enough to be research oriented and dynamically innovative in clinical care and practice? What do you expect when health, just like education, is not given its true place of importance in Nigeria? Don't they know that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation too?

What do you expect when the knowledge being taught and shared at the top echelons in the medical community within Nigeria is not as updated as you will find outside the African shores in the US, UK, Australia, Sweden and even Canada? What do you expect when mediocrity has become the norm among many Nigerian medical institutions today in terms of teaching and some others?



Look, If you want to be the best in terms of global standards, then one must train with the best and learn from the best to be able to stand on the shoulders of giants someday and maybe bring a good part of that learning experience and expertise home to Nigeria. And where exactly is the best? Sadly it is in the western world a small part of the eastern with the likes of The US, Sweden, Australia, Canada, UK, Germany, China PR, Etc leading the way




But is Nigeria ready for a true medical revolution? Where the conventional gives way for the unconventional? Selah.

It would continue to get worse. Nigeria is a failed nation.

Not so easy for a couple of them here. I know two doctors who practiced in Nigeria but could not practice here because they could not pass the qualifying exams after several attempts. Bottom line: not all Nigerian doctors are smart.

According to a new statistics,
80% of the remaining are applying to go to Diaspora.

The west has structured the world's system of things that way. As long as they gave us the education to acquire so called knowledge, for so long are we going to continue serving them.

Its for the same reason we have crude oil, but import petrol.
The same reason we have football stars and they always end us abroad.
The same reason we have have schools, but always end up abroad to upgrade our certification.
It's for the same reason we have our best writers, winning all sort of awards writing in foreign languages, except ours.

Lol. Funny. You've spent your entire life in Nigeria and have the psychological profile of the average Nigerian. What makes you think you will do any better? In fact, a more prudent question is; what makes you think Nigerians will support you in trying to change the status quo?
