Benue killings: ACF sets up committee on anti-grazing law

Published January 13, 2018

Pan-Northern socio-cultural group, the Arewa Consultative Forum, said it had constituted a committee on how best to handle the anti-open grazing law which has been a bone of contention in some parts of the North.

The implementation of the law is currently causing crises in Benue, Taraba and Adamawa states, leading to the killing of hundreds of citizens and the destruction of property.

The Secretary-General of the ACF, Anthony Sani, told one of our correspondents in Kaduna via the telephone on Friday that the constitution of the committee became necessary because the forum believed the clashes bordered on occupation rather than on ethnicity or religion.

Sani, who did not name members of the committee, blamed governors for enacting laws that were not “implementable” just as he knocked the Fulani herdsmen for not “forgiving those who offended them.”

He said, “The ACF has actually constituted a committee on how best to go about the anti-open grazing law with a view to stopping clashes between herdsmen and farmers and improving the volume and quality of the livestock industry in the country.

“This is because the forum believes the clashes border on occupation rather than on ethnicity or religion. The committee has yet to submit its reports to the forum. It is after the submission of the report that well-informed positions on this important subject can be taken. Any law which cannot be implemented for whatever reasons in the interest of all the people should be reconsidered for performance.

“How frustrated we are with the challenges of community living should not make us believe that acts of revenge can address our concerns and bring about the peace needed for socio-economic development.

“There can be no justification for taking it out on innocent people under the pretext of revenge through reprisals. If God can forgive our transgressions, we should also forgive those who transgress against us.

“So, let the herdsmen and farmers come together and unleash their synergy against the collective challenges for a common interest. The two occupations are not mutually exclusive.”

Our lack of vision in Nigeria too has left their occupation so lucrative for generations that we don't have anything to persuade them to leave what they are doing for a 'better' communal or ranching life style. Imagine if with our education and enlightenment, we have set up ranches and made success out of it and drive down the price of cattle or even build a virile export industry around it..... Fulanis would have embrace the improved method of doing things. Boycotting Fulani beef will be a difficult thing cos we rarely agree on anything in Nigeria but imagine a glut in their cattle market.... That can help us to get them to listen to the cry of the civilized populace.

They should rather set up committee on how to educate their herdsmen on ranching.

They're looking for free land for grazing while they left Sambisa forest in the hands of boko haram. Even if all states gives them free lands, a time will come when there'll be no grass on those lands due to continuous grazing and they'll demand for more lands.

Oh God! Why did you create me to share space with these breed of unrepentant blood suckers

Imagine the poo from ACF??

A state that has had to endure unrelenting attacks from Fulani herdsmen for ages finally puts a law in place to secure her citizens and you call that law rubbish

These people, from ACF, to Nig Army, Police, APC governors of northern origin to Reps of Myetti Allah are all working together to annihilate the minority tribes of MB!!

Who still wonders why Buhari has maintained a deadly sinful silence over the killings??
His silence is aligned with what these people have been bold to say!!

If Buhari was not the president, he would have been the loudest voice making screaming headlines about how the anti-open grazing law would spill the blood of the baboons on the streets!!!

Nigerians had better wake up because every region is a target! We cannot continue to live in fear! We must all rise up to challenge the killer in aso rock now or never!!

For crissakes, henceforth, nobody should call Ortom weak again!!

Have we not all seen the forces he's contending with?

Ortom took the bull by the horn for attempting to save the remnant of his people against all odds!

No wonder Buhari and his security agents shot their ears against him and he resorted to crying in public!!

Ortom is indeed a brave man to call their bluff!!

Omenkalives, liondeleo, hungerbad, Omenka, and Iroh, it's now clear why you have refused to condemn the ethnic cleansing going on in your state!! You are afraid of the powers that be!!

A coward dies a million times before the actual death!!

But now all Nigerians must rise up to challenge this overt conspiracy against our humanity!!

Failure to do this now will spell doom for us and our unborn children!

These northern elements are really useless and looking for whom to deceive. Suddenly they are acting like it is the anti open grazing law that sparked killings when these laws were actually enacted in response to ongoing, incessant attacks and killings by their herdsmen brothers.

That is why an idiotic oaf like Lalong will say he warned Ortom not to implement said law. Since when did dissatisfaction with a law mean the massacre of innocent citizens? Does Miyetti not have lawyers that can approach the court to determine the propriety or otherwise of such law? When did they become the ones to dictate to a state how they want to be governed?

It is only because they are already bloodsucking vipers with an ominous agenda that is why thier response is all about violence and destruction.

The President is showing an unholy weakness in this regard.

This issue can throw up the country into crisis.

States as federating units can enact laws according to their circumstances so far that law does not conflict the constitution.

The arrogance of these herdsmen (both the ones in the bush and city) is bewildering.

The law was a response to unbridled crisis and killings. Trying to pull the wool over our eyes and claiming the law is responsible for the crisis is silly to say the least.

The North has started another self destruct agenda to spite anti-grazing law, same way they started Boko Haram to spite GEJ. Whenever they don't like a thing, their first response is kill and destroy, if they were learned enough they would have known the court is a better option to challenge the law.

As usual, our ancestor in Aso Rock will keep silence but goes to pontificate on killing in Myanmar.
