Nigeria is already a failed society that cannot be redeemed except it's restructured One pastor dressed in a black suit somewhere would be patiently waiting for these women labourers to come and submit their tithes which he uses to fund his ravish life style . |

This pretty sad seeing these children work in these wretched conditions. They don't even have on shoes in these mining pits. State and Federal government need to do more to crack down on these illegal miners. They are risking their lives and going to cause long term environmental damage if they aren't regulated. I do agree with taking mining to concurrent legislative list. This would help state government in oversight of environmental, licensing and safety regulations. I think this issue being voted on by state assembly I can't remember. If not there enough support among different states to push it though. Front Page: lalasticlala |

I watched the video and I was hoping to hear someone speak Igbo, not just any Igbo, but with 'Abakiliki' accent which someone from Ebonyi is likely to speak. I didnt hear this, the people being recorded were not talking. One thing that is certain is that in Igbo land, there is no where gifted with Solid minerals and agricultural potential as Ebonyi state. The amount of sold minerals in Ebonyi is mind-boggling The problem of Ebonyi is that it never really found its feet after being created and many Igbos looked down on them as being one of the most undeveloped part of Igbo land. Another thing that did not help was that that the Igbo dialect spoken in Ebonyi is the hardest to understand in Igbo land. Most Igbos will understand Igbo dialects of Ika-Igbo(Delta Igbo) and most Rivers Igbo such as Ikwerre, Egbema, Ndoni, Ahoada. But Abakikiki is tough to understand and it is made worse by the fact that that they dont like to speak central Igbo, which they all know how to speak. The good thing is that it is all changing. From Abakiliki to Afikpo to Ohozara, the discrimination has about died away. No longer is anyone seen as lesser Igbo than the other, based on dialect, accent or level of development. I dont believe this video was shot in Ebonyi |

zendy:You don't believe it was shot in Ebonyi because the weren't speaking Igbo at the time of recording. The journalist had to go undercover and were trailed so they weren't going to be able to conduct long interviews. Mynd44 can you open hidden post. It's part of story with the photos and YouTube video evidence. |

As depressing as it is to see the sorts of things depicted in the article and accompanying video, a simple "crackdown" will likely only worsen the situation rather than improve it, as such a move will mean it's open season for government officials and policemen to start harassing and shaking down the already destitute people who are driven to such extremes to feed themselves. Nobody would voluntarily opt for this way of earning their daily bread if they had better alternatives available to them. The real solution to this kind of desperation is to improve per capita economic growth in the region, but that will require electing politicians of a far higher caliber than Ebonyi (or indeed most of Nigeria) has been blessed with to date. The problem, as always in Nigerian politics, is that the masses who decide in elections lack the education and knowledge to pick wisely, so they opt for charlatans and thieves who play on ethnic sentiments rather than offering coherent and realistic policy platforms. This lack of voters ability to sort out the good from the bad then perpetuates the cycle of underdevelopment. |

Proudlyngwa:have the federal government intervened to remove herdsmen from their farms? Some of them would be better fed in farms but for cows eat up their crops. why must it be mines they close down and not marauding herdsmen? |

Sprumbabafather:the problem with you guys is you always equate one negative with another. instead of seeking solutions you are referencing something wrong that cant change the present situation. we should be campaigning for more media coverage to see if this is true and pressurising both the federal and state to move in and do the right thing instead of spewing rubbish. common sense is really not common |

Proudlyngwa:I am telling you that farming can end illegal mining but the destruction of crops and farmlands is hindering farming and you are trying to keep blaming someone, distracting us from the real cause of the problem. How much media coverage have you given to the real killers and rapists passing the farms with the excuse that they are herdsmen while the police protect them from any punishment even when they have committed crimes? |
| Re: UNDERCOVER: In Ebonyi, Orphans And Little Kids Are Mining In The Pits Of Death by Blue3k(op): 11:35am On Jan 14, 2018 |
omohayek:As much as police suck they do need to something. These illegal miners leave open puts that turn turn into environmental harazards because they won't reclaim the land. That's why kids end up drowning in them. I do think the carrot and stick approach is best. There's no immediate solution to raise antibodies per capita GDP because that times time. 1. Get illegal miners to register offer incentives and funding for safety equipment. 2. Patrol and jail those who refuse to comply. 3. The state should raise IGR so they can fund their public school expenses. The kids can get at least 1 meal at school. 3b. I would say have breakfast program like US but that asking a bit too much currently. (The breadwinner kids different issue) |

It’s depressing how quick some commenters have been to hijack a serious issue like this in order to either engage in petty tribalistic attacks, or to deny ugly realities out of a desire to preserve tribal pride. The total lack of concern for human suffering displayed by these commenters is symptomatic of why Nigeria is such a failure of a state in the first place. What sorts of reprobates see children undergoing labor even grown men would find difficult, yet are only able to think of tribalistic nonsense, as if poverty and desperation were unknown in any part of Nigeria? What hope can there be for good government in a nation whose populace has such a low mentality? |

Blue3k:I guess what it comes down to is that you retain a minimal level of faith in the abilities and good intentions of the Nigerian police that I lost very many years ago - in all my time I have never once experienced a situation in which the intervention of the Nigerian police in any matter was for the better, and I see no reason why it would be any different in this particular case. If Nigeria's police forces were locally organized and directly accountable to the people they supposedly watch over, that would be one thing, but as you know, the opposite is currently the case: they are centrally managed from distant Abuja, with even governors having only a limited amount of influence on their actions, and all levels of the police hierarchy ruthlessly exploit this fact to their advantage. The only practical consequence I can see to your proposals 1 and 2 is that these thugs in uniform will now go around demanding a cut of the illegal proceeds for themselves, driving the poorest of these desperate people into even less palatable means of sustaining themselves - most likely crimes like stealing and robbery. One the other hand, I think your third proposal for free school meals is a very good one, if properly implemented: apart from providing an incentive for the poorest children to attend school, it will help them do better at their studies while they are in attendance, as malnutrition dulls the mind. As ever in Nigeria, the question is whether any such program will be properly implemented, instead of having the funds siphoned off by politicians, and whether the electorate will be outraged if the latter is the case, instead of allowing themselves to be distracted by whose "turn" it is to have "their son" at the top stealing. |

Sprumbabafather:You are clearly as witless as you are heartless, more interested in being able to puff your pigeon chest in hollow pride than alleviating the plight of the children whose origins you're so keen to deny. Unlike you, I have no problem admitting that every corner of Nigeria experiences harsh poverty, including Kano, Oshogbo, Abakaliki, Akure, Jos, Maiduguri and even Lagos: what sets me apart from idi.ots like you is that I'm more interested in bettering the lives of all those poor Nigerians than protecting my fragile ego through ridiculous denials of facts. You and your childish, ignorant ilk who prefer to stick their heads in the sand are directly to blame for Nigeria's stagnation. |
