A geographic information system (GIS) lets us visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand spatial relationships, patterns, and trends. GIS benefits organizations of all sizes and in almost every industry today.

GIS IS INTERESTING...
Geographic Information Systems is a computer-based tool that analyzes, stores, manipulates and visualizes geographic information, usually in a map.

Geographic Information Systems really comes down to just 4 simple ideas:

Create geographic data
Manage it.
Analyze it and…
Display it on a map.

These are the primordial functions of a GIS.

Build Your Career in Geomatics
GIS Data Layers - Geographic Information Systems
GIS Data Layers
If you thought a career in GIS meant only making maps, you’d be wrong.

From planning a pipeline to navigating ships, spatial problems need spatial thinkers. This is why Geographic Information Systems has expanded into countless other disciplines.

Tech-savvy employers expect the complete package of GIS skills. Now, GIS need skilled workers in multiple skill sets. For example, it’s helpful to learn programming, remote sensing, surveying, databases or web development.

Cartographers create maps. Actually, the origin of the job title comes from charta which means “tablet or leaf of paper” and graph ”to draw”
Database managers store and extract information from structured sets of geographic data.
Programmers write code and to automate redundant GIS processes. For example, GIS programming languages includes Python, SQL, C++, Visual Basic and JavaScript.
Remote sensing analysts use satellite or aerial imagery to map the Earth.
Spatial analysts manipulate, extract, locate and analyze geographic data.
Land surveyors measure the 3-dimensional coordinates on the land.

Thanks OP

I am an undergraduate student. I have been hearing about GIS but really do not have a complete understanding of it. I would just say it involves the use of geographic maps. Here are my questions :
1.0 Where can this knowledge be applied especially in Nigeria ?

2.0 Does it guarantee quick employment ?

The following organization functional GIS lab:
1..Federal Capital Development Administration
2..NCC
3..NGSA
4.NIMET
5.Nigeria Army
6.UI,OAU,FUTA,ABU
7.NBS etc

Please GIS and Remote Sensing is not restricted to Geography or Geographers alone.. Please stop that impression...

When you have this knowledge to compliment your GIS expertise, you can climb higher than any other candidate.

No questions asked.

What are some of the other popular trending GIS jobs?

GIS programming is a big one. But be careful about listing Python experience on your resume if you don’t want a programming job.

Webmap development, geostatistics, remote sensing, computer-aided design are other in-demand skills.

Think of GIS as more of a tool than a field in itself

GIS + programming = job
GIS + forestry = job
GIS + web development = job
GIS + statistics = job
GIS + geology = job
GIS +Civil Engineering =Job
GI5+Public Health =job
GIS+mathematics =job
GIS +Surveying =job
GIS +Physics =job
GIS +Elect=job
GIS+Geography =job
GIS+metrology=job
GIS+Urban planning =job
GIS +demography =job
GIS+Fishery=Job
GIS +Management =Job
GIS +Hospitality =Job
GIS +Sociology =Job

A varied skill set serves you well. Adapt to technology and software change. Don’t ever stop training and don’t ever stop looking for a challenge.

I am delighted coming across this wonderful thread. I have been searching for such for a while on Nairaland.

I am a Soil scientist by the way, and i have carried out some Agricultural related projects with the aid of GIS and Remote sensing.
I hope this thread metamorphous into something bigger where knowledge and experiences can be shared.
