The indigenes don't want to sell/lease/rent land to the rearers due to reasons best known to them...

State government must step in, acquire lands by paying appropriate compensation to indigenes, and then lease this land to breeders. This will be in the interest of all parties.

We must end open grazing but we have to proposed better alternative in the interest of the country.


Aside Taraba state, no state in the Northwest or Northeast has functional ranch... This is an aberration and indictment on the northern leaders.

However, we can't restrict them to the north alone except we are dividing Nigeria.

why can't they be restricted to the north if non of the southern states want the colonies.

if its the grass they want we can do business with them by transporting feed for their cattle just like if we want meat down south they can transport down here.

I have been following conversation on the issue between Nigerians in the business of cattle breeding alias Fulani herdsmen and indigenous farmers in Benue, Taraba and other states majorly in the Northeast, Northcentral and Southwest.

Firstly, I must express my displeasure and utter disappointment in some of our political, ethnic and religious leaders from both sides of the divide, who have been engaging themselves in uttering narratives that were tantamount to hate speeches against those from the other side of the divide, since the unfortunate attacks against innocent citizens from Benue state. While I admit that some of these narrative were products of heightened emotions, I must say that one of the fundamental problems we have in this country is that some of our elites and so-called opinion leaders have the habit of sensationalising every issue by stoking religious and ethnic sentiment in other to play to the gallery and further some inappropriate agenda. This is a sad and very unfortunate.

Secondly, I wish to state that Nigerians must learn to separate criminals and terrorists from their ethnic and religious groups, as well as their trade if we really want to achieve peace, mutual understanding and cooperation. We must learn to distinguish militiamen and terrorists of Fulani extraction that must be brought to justice, from herdsmen that are of Fulani extraction irrespective of whether the terrorists are also into the trade of cattle breeding or not. In fact, it is the right thing to do! As an Ijaw man, I get offended each time I see headlines such as "Ijaw militants" or "Niger Delta militants" because I believe that the narrative was stereotyping people of the Ijaw nation and Niger Delta region as people that always take to violence to make known their grievances simply because majority of people that took to militancy and violent agitation are from the region. Same way I would be offended by the narrative of equating Fulani herdsmen as militiamen if I were to be a Fulaniman that is in the business of cattle breeding.

Furthermore, I hold a strong conviction that the call for proscribing “Fulani herdsmen” is inappropriate and misguided as it simply means criminalising people of Fulani ethnic group that are involved in the business of cattle breeding. However, I must state that the appropriate way to tackle these militiamen/terrorists is for federal government and security agencies to start treating every herdsman that goes about with unlicensed firearms as enemies of the State in line with section 28(i) of Firearms Act and other laws.

To avoid future recurrence of the farmer/herdsmen clash, the umbrella body of Cattle breeders, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, should educate their members on the consequences of destroying farmlands in line with relevant laws and ensure that mechanism for adequate compensation of a farmer is in place in a situation where farmlands are invaded by cattle and crops destroyed. This can be achieved when MACBAN partners with the farmers unions and communities where they operate to setup joint monitoring team whose responsibility is to ensure that the lives and crops of farmers are protected, and apprehend or assist in apprehending defaulting herdsmen irrespective of status.

Similarly, the farmers and communities should put mechanism in place to ensure that the lives and cattle of herdsmen within their locality is protected and arrest or assist in arresting members of the community or farmer that default by attacking either the herdsman or the cattle.

Furthermore, I believe that open grazing is an archaic method of cattle breeding and a system that create room for clashes between the cattle breeders and farmers, and this system of cattle breeding should be illegal. In place of it, state governments create grazing fields and put on lease to the cattle breeders through MACBAN. Royalties/rents can be collected from the operators of this field in addition to tax payable to the government by individual operators. This grazing field should be supervised by the state’s ministry of agriculture or a specialised agency. A positive side to this is that it will serve as a pool of revenue generation to the state and will further create employment for teaming youths, as well as boost our dairy industry and agriculture subsector.

Let me state that I am opposed to herdsmen acquiring/buying lands as grazing fields because it will cause problems in future as the issue of land ownership may arise after a couple of years or even decades.

At this juncture I appeal to everyone from all sides of the divide to shun senseless conspiracy theories and narratives that will further polarise the already worsened situation, but instead tow the path that yields true reconciliation and furthers our unity.

I did not see you condemn their atrocities in this your article neither did I see you label fulani herdsmen terrorists the way you did when the python dancers were dancing in the east. This is hypocrisy at it's peak. During operation python dance you were in every thread condemning IPOB and Kanu without thinking twice in fact, here are some of your comments...

From my understanding of the report, a certain herdsman Gilolo said it was revenge attack but the same REPORT said MACBAN through the spokesman CONDEMNED the killing and said MACBAN/herdsmen aren't killers that killers be treated as killers and not herdsmen.

If not to justify your preconceived bias against the Fulani herdsmen, I am sure you would ordinarily have known that there is a difference between speaking in personal capacity and official capacity. The Gilolo guy spoke on his own and not for MACBAN, he deserve to be arrested by the DSS and treated as a suspected perpetrator but his opinion doesn't erode that of Miyetti Allah.

The Gololo in question is not just any member but a leader of a state chapter. He clearly communicated their intent and purpose. For as long as he remains free without being arrested and jailed along with the perpetrators, it remains clear that the actions of the MACBAN are government approved and supported.

I always advice people to drop sentiment if they really want to achieve result or peace.

People must not take arms before states do what it appropriate. Having lands for cattle ranches that is leased to MACBAN for their members to breed cattle is appropriate, not because anybody need to placate the herdsmen or anybody but because it us the RIGHT THING TO DO (just like the cases of parks that I cited)

On the contrary, the right thing to do is to live in peace and stop propagating their history plans of displacement and dominance. That is why all sane persons resistant them. So why not tell People selling spare parts in Lagos, Abuja, Rivers, Warri etc to go to their states government and apply for market to trade their wares?

Why not tell the Akwa Ibom food seller in Lagos to go to her state government to get a place where she would sell her food? Why not tell the Ijaw fisherman to restrict his fishing to only rivers that surround Ijawland?

There is a difference between somebody speaking in his personal capacity and same person speaking in his official capacity. Statement spoken in personal capacity of an INDIVIDUAL irrespective his status, is considered PERSONAL OPINION of that person and not that of the group he leads.

The MACBAN's opinion was spoken by the Publicity Secretary and that is what counts. If not that the lense of bigotry have beclouded you, you should have been calling for the arrest of Gololo for the sake of justice but you wouldn't.

How does State government creating ranches and putting them on lease that will generate revenue to the state and arrest indiscriminate invasion of farms becomes land seizure? I will have to return to Primary school I think

The article is shallow and empty, the kind of empty, cowardly rhetorics that are peculiar to politicians,. But in this case, not just any politician, but ones who think they owe some kind of axx-licking allegiance to the Fulani fiefdom in Nigeria.

The writer shockingly omits to acknowledge the increasing tempo of mass murders committed by Fulani herdsmen against community after community in Benue and other states over the last few years.

The writer plays the proverbial ostrich by pretending that recurring events of Fulani herdsmen ( yes, FULANI herdsmen) and their or.gies of mass murders are simply misunderstandings between two friends or communities.

The writer painstakingly omits to berate the federal government and body language of the present leader , whose very loud silence and tepid response to these mass killings does nothing but embolden the killers.

Funny that this writer used much harsher words to berate Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, who, throughout their angry struggles with Nigerian state, neither carried arms nor threatened any Nigerian citizen with violence.

When I realize that we have plenty of people with a very dishonest and cowardly disposition on very critical national issues like the writer, it makes me want to vomit. Seriously.

There is only one side of this issue, not two.
People, a mass of people , are being repeatedly murdered and genocided by FULANI herdsmen , who happen to enjoy the support of the present government, at least the president, for sure.

Are transporters in parks not private businessmen operating for profit? Cattle breeding is part of the activities that adds to the economy and further the Agriculture subsector, so yes, it is the job of government to ensure ease of doing business.

With a grazing territory they would remain in business and still not trample on crops of farmers like the way they are doing in open grazing.

Beside, if they were Ijaw/Igbo, I will advocate same...

Meanwhile, who says a non-Fulani can't go into cattle breeding business when ranch is provided?

The bolded has been happening in the SE and we have not heard of cases of a cattle owner causing harm and destruction to farmers there so ranching is nothing new.
