Nigeria Needs Electoral College System by shegzhkn(op): 4:01pm On Jan 26, 2018
This system is adopted by the United States of America to select their president and vice president.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_College_(United_States)

Succinctly the purpose is to make sure every voice is heard to select their leader,to bridge the gap between large states like California, Florida ,Texas (largest state in United States by population). This three states constitute one-third of the United States population and it is very easy for a presidential candidate to channel all energy towards states with massive population and sideline states with lesser population like North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, Wyoming.

That why America president are selected via the process as we can see in 2016 election of the country where Clinton emerge winner in popular vote but lost to trump in electoral college.

Now coming to Nigeria where we don't use such system to select our president , I honestly think this system is needed because some fraction of the population with same religion affiliation account for largest part of country population.

I saw a thread earlier where traders in Kano vow to support Mr buhari come 2019 and let not forget Kano state gave him most vote in 2015 to make him president of Nigeria.

Truth is life has not been easy in this buhari administration, from massive job lost, killings by herdsmen, unfavorable economic climate and so.

Now if the set of people(hausa's) that contribute immensely in making him the president through their vote try to support him again in 2019 with one or two vote from the west and east, the probability of him not emerging the again as the president is slim.

But had it been we are using America electoral system reverse will be the case.

Now your own view....

I don't support it sometimes the electoral college do not speak the mind of the majority.I believe the voices of the people are enough some Americans are even calling for the scrapping of the electoral college.

with electoral college in place it will stop things like this.

Nigeria is too corrupt to have such a system. All a contestant has to do is bribe the electorates to vote in his favour. Votes will go to the highest bidder.

You are right though, but I think that the Nigerian political system has not gotten to that level.America has different classes of voters who vote based on different reasons like the middle class, college educated, liberal, conservative, independent and others and Nigerians have none of these. My major problem with the electoral college is that sometimes they do not reflect the wish of the majority.

but did you think is feasible, United States has 538 electors and California has the highest electors meaning the electors numbers aren't the same in numbers in the 50 states.

now if that the same case in Nigeria, you really think a presidential aspirant can bribe most of the electors to emerge winner.

In Nigeria, the North will have the highest number of electorates. It will even be worse than the system we have.

I have been discussing this electoral college with my political friends. Here in the South, we are currently having between 2-4 childred at most for enlightened families. Most now stop at 3. Many confortable with two. High illiteracy in the north coupled with religion that allows multiple wives, the northerners would soon outnumber the whole of south/middlebelt combined. They would then decide what happens if we continue this way.

And you know what happens when these guys become majority ? Religious cleansing - no freedom of religion- widespread sharia. See Saudi, Iran , etc . You can't even get a licence to operate any other religion. Saudi is considered 100% islam .

I SUPPORT ELECTORAL COLLEGE

Electoral college system can't work in Nigeria because we don't really know our true population by states, it works in the US because their census can't be manipulated like ours. Let's know our true population then you can start thinking about this.

no, lagos are going to get the highest base on population.

United States electors consist of 435 house of representatives members, 100 senators and 3 from district of Columbia. if Nigeria model it on how we choose our legislators, the igbos are going to have voice in determining our president couple with Lagos population, Rivers State and other SS state.

We already have a form of electoral college in our electoral system. To win presidential election in Nigeria, a candidate must not only win highest majority of votes, but must also win 25% of valid votes cast in 24 states and the FCT,to be declared winner.Otherwise, the election goes to a runoff between the winner and the candidate with the largest spread,I.e 25% in most number of states.
Same is applicable to gubernatorial elections too,viz a viz 25% in 2/3 of the local government areas constituting the state.
This is to ensure that populous states/LGs alone do not determine who wins election for an executive position under the constitution.
Re: Nigeria Needs Electoral College System by IamaNigerianGuy(m): 9:39pm On Jan 26, 2018
Nigeria does not need an electoral college system. The problem with Nigeria is not the political / electoral system but the terms of our union.

In any case, you misunderstand the purpose of the American electoral college. The idea was three-fold :

1. to protect the interests of the elite
2. To prevent tyranny of the majority
3 and to protect the southern slave-holding states which at the start had a large black population without voting rights from being overwhelmed by the northern states which were already considering expanding suffrage

The electoral college turns a direct democracy into a republican representative democracy and can be manipulated so that the candidate with the highest popular vote does not get appointed to office. This is the case with Trump who won 304 electoral college votes to Clintons 277. It has been used 5 times in Americas history. There have also been serious attempts to abolish the process especially in 1971, with the election of Nixon who got 56% of the electoral vote even though he won with 511,000 popular votes that represented less than 1% of the votes cast.

Our politicians are corrupt enough, we do not need to entrust them with more responsibility. Imagine how money will change hands if reps or senators where to decide the outcome of the presidential elections. No nation follows the American example of the electoral college system anymore
