he has to land first before you can. So he'll complete the landing process in Canada before your arrival. Inland applicants usually know how that works, I do not know where they do it.

He has to go to the nearest border to him, be it airport or land border with the U.S. Most people I know just drove to the closest border to the U.S and completed the process.

Ekinado, you can also ask him to meet you at the airport the day you land. And y'all can do it together.

Cold beautiful day in Calgary today.... I just love the seeming desolation in the landscape...

My! THAT is what I did not like about Calgary...well, the much of it that I saw during my short landing.

I love that city view, with modern buildings, high rises! Give me modern!!!!

All this talk about racisms only makes me lol

I will state categorically that racism is the least of issues that will stand in the way of a success driven immigrant. I'm saying this as a black man who has lived in Canada for several years now.

Come here, develop and demonstrate your skills, become so good in what you do that you cannot be ignored. Doing this alone, you will find that you do not even have time for all the talk and propaganda from race hustlers (people who actually have an interest in fanning the embers of racism for their own benefit) you will also be far removed from whatever stifling concerns such things might present. Not saying it doesn't happen at all.

As has been previosuly stated by others, ethnic discrimination is just as rampant if not more, back in Nigeria.

Personally, ish like this doesn't even come up in my radar, I have lived in and visited several cities in this country and never had any negative experiences in this regard. I also have friends from all races, whites, asians, blacks, hispanics, arabs etc. For the most part Canada is a welcoming place.

This is the least of your worries if you know what you are here for.

Thank you for the positive words!

Thanks to the person that introduced freetones here.

I purchased a number and opted for unlimited calls to and from US/Canada.

Just today i had my first phone interview with a Canadian employer. It was successful but unfortunately the job is starting too close to my landing date next week. Am suppose to meet with the manager and suppose to receiving some further training prior to the start date.

Another employer just contacted me for interview. Hopefully this one would click.

For all those hoping to get a job before leaving... its very possible. Package your resume... apply via indeed, job bank etc

Am landing Ontario next week. Any landed Nairalander with connect to IT jobs... please hook a brother up

Well done!!!

Fried meat? Mbanu, it's not allowed. Minced meat is not allowed, shredded meat is not allowed, boiled meat is not allowed, roasted meat is not allowed. NO MATTER THE COLOUR, ONCE IT'S MEAT OR MEATY, CAN'T BE TAKEN ACCROSS.

So cos of confusion yesterday, I found myself in Fort Saskatchewan (the story get as e be) I live at Edmonton

If only my Oga knew that his wife don turn indigene for Canada, he go dey respect me wella, lol.

Fort Saskatchewan is quite small and village looking. Looked like an industrialized area. So those not sure of where to go and like small towns, Fort is for u smiley

When I realized I was a long way from home, fear come dey catch me and I started imagining all sorts, like police pulling me over and arresting me for not having an ID (forgot my wallet at home) I imagined the vehicle breaking down on the highway with no help and me and my pikin will be stranded then Oga will finally catch me that I no Dey house, lol.

I wonder what town I’d find myself “mistakenly” soon.

Love your sense of adventure!

I want to be like you when I grow up! grin

Hey guys,

I am back again reading up but had to skip some pages cause of time.

So, we are back in Naija after the short landing. It was alright. I did not see all of Calgary to make an overall judgement. All I saw was white everywhere. The layering up helped a lot and I was not as cold as I thought I will be. We spent minimal time outdoors though.

We were able to get the basics done: SIN registration, health card registration, opened bank accounts with TD. Hubby tried the knowledge test for driver's license, failed the first time (because of one point-painful) but passed the second time. For me, I was not ready to fail o. I took vcole's advice - doing all knowledge and driving test when we return in the beautiful summer time grin.

Em, I decided to take my kids for a walk one day, being bundled inside the house for days. So, we layered up 4 layers! As we stepped outside, it was windy. It was -12 that day. I decided, let's go right, up the hill with the wind on our backs. We got to the top of the road, kids were sniffing, with emergency catarrh and I said, okay, let's turn back. grin grin grin that was when I understood the wind! grin It was biting!! My 7 year old enjoyed it!! It was exciting to her. But the younger one, hmmm, I had to carry her, put her on my shoulder so the wind won't blow on her face. This walk took a total of 6 minutes. grin I felt better when I got indoors. Will I do it again, sure!
What amazed me the most was days later, when the temperature increase to 6 degrees, we celebrated the warmth. Amazing how the body adjusts!

Hmm, I do not want to cause a big debate but, the cost of living when converted to naira is not a small money. I already knew that from all the knowledge I gathered from this thread, I was just not ready to calculate it. It all boils down to, is it worth it in the end? Yes, yes and yes!

Next step for me now is to find a good elementary school.

Please can you guys advice me on which areas to avoid in Calgary. Someone has mentioned NE. Does this mean the whole NE??

Thank you!

Thanks. Seems straight forward. A brief look at the nca site shows assessment fees as $450 and nca challenge exams at 340 each. So with 8 courses and assessment that's roughly $3200. Not bad at all. Way cheaper than docs pathway lol!!
That is the easy part o, ARTICLING is the hard part cos the opportunities are scarce. So you may have passed all those hard exams and get stranded cos no firm accepts you to do the compulsory articling

Did you wait to get your PR card? If not, how did you sort out travel + plans to arrive later without it?

Thanks

@rainazoe,

No, I am an ACA (ICAN qualified). Though I have my registration approval with CPA Ontario, I want to defer moves with that line of effort for some obvious reasons for now...I have consulted widely and I guess it's the best thing to do for now (especially considering what I want to do, career wise going forward)

Cheers man.

It will all end in praise IJN!

Provinces with a large number of academic institutions (Unis, Polytechnics and colleges) would obviously have more opportunnities.

The provinces or the instituitions?
If provinces, then Ontario, BC and Quebec would definitely have the largest numbers of institutions.

It is interesting that the two guys I know that went the academic line both got a temp teaching job in Ontario. One finally got a perm position in the same province while the other got a perm position in BC.

@TEECANN why are you not pursuing an accounting profession especially since you have obtained the highly elusive CPA designation? Which field is more lucrative for an accountant and what certifications are you pursuing. Please provide more insight.

I think he means he has successfully registered with CPA as a student member to obtain the CPA designation.
