D car with 2AZ engine is barely one year and was bought as tokunbo with over 200k mileage . Has Serviced it only twice with 20w-50 engine oil but noticed oil shortage though slight at about 400 to 500 miles of driving. Do I switch over to 5w-30 or do I continue with d 20w-50? Your candid advise will be appreciated.

Yes you can switch over since it's bare a year old. After switching check exhaust for smoke and Guage for shortage also ensure there is no external leak due to worn out seals or under pan damage.

If no external leak and there is still oil shortage and smoke from exhaust sometimes only visible when throttle is held between 2 and 3rpm. Then you have damaged internal components of the engine.

Solutions replace engine outright

by default 2az built in the USA have oil burn issues caused by worn out piston rings.

Do not bother with 5w30, short drain intervals on Mineral oil would be better.

the engine is quite dated.

Been in use since late 2004.
