Part of the roof at an airport in the southeastern Chinese province of Jiangxi collapsed amid strong winds on Sunday afternoon, according to Chinese media.

Videos posted by Weibo users showed a section of an overhang outside the departures terminal of the Nanchang Changbei Airport plunging to the ground as some panicked and ran away from the glass wall.


Another clip showed cars driving away from the curb to avoid being hit by the falling debris.

No one was injured or killed in the incident, according to the Weibo account of the Jiangxi Airports Group Company.


The company said that the decorative materials on the overhang were torn off by gusts of over 30 metres per second.

It said the airport subsequently arranged for departing passengers to use the arrivals hall, and normal operations were resumed by the evening.

Some Weibo users questioned the quality of the structure, asking whether it was “tofu construction.”

“It really felt like the end of the world, so frightening, the wind was so strong that it seemed like it would break the glass,” one netizen said.

It won't take long before it would be replaced. If it is in Nigeria, the airport would be close for weeks until committee is being set up to evaluate the cause of the roof collapse.
