I am a staff of Globacom and a married woman with 2 kids. I was not sacked. But I was promoted to a higher position. I don't think want happened is about married women. It's well.

A report just got in now that there have been a massive job loss for all married women in Gloworld department of Globacom Nigeria Ltd today. This is a sad development as this implies that you're not expected to marry and bear children once you're an employee of the organization. I expect that the women rights organisation take this up worldwide to stop a reoccurrence in future. No compensation was paid to them even after working for close to fifteen years in the organization. This can only happen in naija.

As a result there is shortage in input which affects general output. Also some go for maternity check up days and even some would just not be in the office due to maternity related health issue. The industry is competitive, and the business owner has the sole discretion to restructure as he pleases. Anyone who is not okay with the employers decision can go into his or her own business.

Let me tell you an open secret...big corporations lose money when women go on maternity leave because you have to pay them 3months salary without them doing any work. Even after they resume, they will be working half a day for several weeks And you can take one every year, by law there is no restriction. So it's easier to kick them out and bring in single ladies. That's what Glo did. And I'm not saying it's right. Also generally 10 years qualifies for retirement benefits.

This is really very unfortunate. This shouldnt be heard of in the 21st century.

While I sympathize with my colleagues affected by the sack, it is not true that women were sacked because they are married.  People were sacked due to non-performance.  From the appraisal, some staff were promoted, others were moved across level. And by the grace of God, I was promoted from Stock Controller to Manager, and I am married and working in Gloworld for over 10 years.  It is important we say the truth. Ij, PH.

My opinion here differs from the writer here. I work with Globacom and I'm married with a Child. I am still in employment and placed in a more senior role. We all knew of the recent corporate restructuring exercise although it took us all by surprise. The loss of employment at this time is very painful and I feel the pain and frustration of my colleagues whose employment have been terminated. I'm aware of so many male and single female colleagues whose employment were also terminated as a result of this restructuring exercise. Though I'm not privy to the criteria that informed the terminations and new staff placements, I believe there was a structure to it which was definitely not targeted at married women. Rather, my informed guess would be 'efficiency'. Could the writer be more fact based?

Really? Most of them were pioneer staff who have contributed to the success of the company. Are you saying if a single lady gets a job in telecoms, she should not get married and have children? Many of them were good at their jobs and for every successful business, there should always be room for married women. If Adenuga doesn't want them again, at least they should be paid their entitlements.

Woman...you are just crying wolf where there is none. Your appointment was terminated for services no longer required. No court can fault the action taken by Glo as long as all statutory requirements are complied with. In the 13 years you spent in Glo, what effort did you make to develop yourself? You think a reasonable employer will keep you till eternity. You were handling same job responsibility for 13 years, now it is obvious that you have reached the ceiling of your so-called profession. The job at the friendship center is for young graduates not old mothers. Also, don't expect any compensation please. No company does that again. Your contributory pension scheme has taken care of that.

The 14 years I spent serving Globacom flashed before my eyes when I received a mail from HR telling me that they no longer require my service cause I am married and work in the Gloworld (friendship centre)..hmm!i felt used and dumped cause we(married women) once joined this company young and vibrant thinking we were going to take over the world, the reverse was the case hence the suffering and smiling. They seem to have forgotten that we were the pioneer staff of Globacom..we contributed to the success of the company and all they can do is ask us to go?with a promise to pay us one month salaries...which till now has not happened! We worked for years without being promoted or compensated! I remember how we were driven to work Mondays to Sundays without complaints, how most of us use our money to run our shops I.e repair, toiletries stationeries..and when we give them the bill they ask us to be patient...in fact some of us still havnt been paid for expenses since last year!. They seem to have forgotten how we stayed with them despite the fact that we have not gotten our salaries reviewed in years! We have been promised over and over again but got nothing! We were left to face the inflation that hit the economy hard!. How degrading is it to suddenly see someone walk up to you and say he/she has been asked to take ur position without any fore warning..We were replaced by men and single ladies who did not work hard to earn the positions we struggled for years to get to!. Most of us were so embarrassed that we quickly packed our tables for the new intakes to take over...people that have no knowledge of what they are to do...completely clueless! Some of us have lost colleagues in line of duty and all management did was ask us to contribute money to the deceased families..we had to contribute money from salaried we were managing when I know for a fact that Dr Mike Adenuga can easily pay these families without batting an eye lid! We work so hard that we our families think we have gone completely Mad! All these we took and still came to work with smiles on our faces hoping and praying for things to get better! I shouldn't have to suffer for being married, I should not be thrown away like a piece of garbage, not because of my lack of performance but because I got married and had kids! From the little I can deduce, Globacom wants to cut cost. That to me is the major reason...but why only married women is what I cannot deduce.

I Refute any claim that Globacom sacked married women. In as much as I sympathise and empathise with my colleagues who were affected by this restructuring exercise, the notion that Globacom no longer need married women is a Rumour and has no founding. I am married with kids and still working with Globacom and was just promoted during this same exercise. With all Sincerity What I was able to gather as the basis for the restructuring exercise was that staff appraisal on performance was used. Please let's have our facts right! God bless us all and reward us where man failed!
