This, he said, was the reason for the mega rally university non-teaching staff had that took them to the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Assembly where they called for investigation into university administration across the country.

Ngokwe told Sunday Vanguard, “The mega rally is to sensitize the public about the plight of the university system as some people are gradually killing education through corruption in Nigeria. They don’t want any probe. We have asked government to set up Visitation Panels to all the universities that are overdue, let them study what is happening in the universities and unravel the corruption taking place because they are collecting IGR and they account to nobody. “We are not even talking about sex for marks, abuse of young girls and money for marks; when some graduating students make 2:1, some of them are not even in the country, some of them are doing prostitution in Italy but they are getting 2:1.“When she comes back and sends a lorry load of bags of cement to the lecturer, she will be awarded ‘A’ in his course. So many unwholesome things are happening in the system. “Let them investigate the research allowances they get which they are using to buy big cars and building houses and a lot of other works are finished at the beer parlour. By 3 o’clock they are already drinking till 11pm, that is where they do the research. “These are things we know and nobody is talking. They are at the staff club drinking beer till 10, 11 pm. Is that where they do the research? :oLet government investigate the research allowances that are given out in the universities”. The union leader pleaded with the National Assembly to wade into corruption in the university system so as to make the place a proper place for education.

This is a case of bad belle. You mean because a lecturer is researching, he/she is not supposed to drink beer, buy luxury cars or build good houses?

Do you know that they also earn a salary and other allowances beyond research funds/grants?

Do you know they also have cooperatives where they can take loans at very low single digit rates?

Do you also know that they also have access to the various Banks and building societies to obtain exorbitant loans, just like every other person?

Do you also know that the most successful cooperatives in Nigeria are being owned, run and managed by these same lecturers?

I don't get it. Are lecturers and researchers supposed too be lowlifes? Are they no longer part of the elites of the society?

Every research grant/donor has a way of checking on the beneficiaries to make sure that the research is properly concluded. So, all of you are just saying rubbish because of your ignorance. Is the researcher not supposed to gain some financial benefits for himself from the research project? Is the researcher supposed to go ńaked, be tattered and live like a pauper because (s)he is doing research? What do you people even mean self?

If you knew how drudgery research work can be, you'll even recommend for an all expenses paid holiday abroad for the lecturer to go chill after the conclusion of a research project.

There is nothing scary about research work unless one never had passion for it in the first place!

While I agree with some of the stated information, I cannot help but say that some of them are anecdotal.

I've been involved in a number of research projects, and I must say, we (Nigerians) are doing our best.

The last research project I volunteered on was on the study of insectivorous bats across different elevations on Afi and Obudu mountains in Cross River State.

My lecturer, who came from the USA won a number of research grants, and I must say, I've never ever in my life, seen the kind of equipments she bought upon Her arrival in Nigeria.

At the end of the project, we discovered that the population and/or diversity of bats on the mountain decreases as we ascend. Some of the findings will be published sooner rather than later (as the one shared is just a slice of the project).

But the big question is will our policy makers adhere to the suggestions and comments made in the article(s)?

If all of these are not tackled - by waking the government and policy makers from their dogmatic slumber, I'm afraid some folks will keep assuming that researchers (although not all) are squandering the research grants received.

Which research are they doing that we are not seeing. Do you think research is just to write paper. What research are the science and engineering departments doing that we can't see in our economy or on the media. Researches are meant to come about solutions, how many have we seen in Nigeria. What researches are being dome by our management, social and humanities that cannot reflect at least vis-a-vis our corrupt politicians. We see what university researches is doing in other countries, so what are they doing here if not sleeping and waking up on frivolities.

And now all you can say is that they are stupid for not fighting for their stomach.

...ya and the people in it are doomed too like you...why look for a way to leave when Niger border is not far...easy transit to Libya via Niger through katsina or zamfara....the things with u guyz is u dont watch news or read to see the outside world...the world itself is very bad with wars and unfair stuff going on in many countries....see the war in syria, conflict in south sudan, congo,burundi, somalia, the famine in north korea, ethiopia, erithrea, the poverty in cambodia,mynammar, Africa, unemployment rate increasing in many countries, the gun deaths in the US, and the developed world is not left out with more than half of the population of these countries are unhappy.... a lot are happening around the world and i bet ur place might be heaven for many....these are no excuses for whats happening but to brace oneself and be logical....look at the broader picture and reason beyond boundaries....
