I will rather not reply a single posts amongst the numerous apparent delusional posts of so many Nigerians. Delusional in the sense that this same set of people, who are ready to throw all health workers under the bus, has never for once voted in a government whose primary concern is health. Yet in their deluded, hallucinatory state, they want doctors to perform miracles once they have a sick one.
It is high time Nigerians got this into thier thick skull, that their health is a primary concern of theirs, and not any doctor's or health worker. Doctors and other health workers roles are only secondary.
Before you go on looking as confused as an irrational creatures God has made Nigerians to be, you should know that just like any other professionals, health workers need tools to work. I am not in any way absolving UCH of any blame, but it is ominously disgusting that no commenter on this issue has sat back to really ask him or herself what role he/she has played to ensuring better health for himself and his immediate family. Do you know that in UK, US and other developed countries, where sane people reside, health, its financing, adequacies and inadequacies are the sole responsibility of every citizen, and not just health workers. But, of course, we dont live in a sane climate where people know that it is largely their responsibility to hold the government responsible for any shortcomings or failures of the health system. The people of these saner climes ensure that the government provide all necessary tools needed for a maximum health care. Once these are in place, then you can begin to question the quality of the person(s) who is going to handle the tools.
Here in my country, we dont have the tools. Citizens dont bother about asking or even fighting for the tools to help provide maximum health care for them, yet they will delusionally expect health workers to preform miracles whenever they are in need of health services.
You had better start fighting for you lives, by taking the first step in ensuring you start asking the government for better health.

I have been a Nairalander since 2015 and I hardly respond to topics being discussed but this response really touched a nerve in me. I have been a residence of Ibadan since my birth before relocation overseas in the early 2000 and it pains me to see our public officials trying to defend what is indefensible.

Firstly, for the management of the UCH to say "Late Oluwaseun was given the best medical service that she required when she was brought in" is a lie and everybody that have used (either as patient or relatives of patient) the hospital knows that for a fact.

I can only say this because of my personal experience with the lost of my Father who died in with complication due to Diabetes. My dad was admitted to UCH where he receives treatment for his condition when he fell and had a cut on his leg plus a strain.

Due to UCH negligence he was given a Drip with sugar content which made his body sugar increase. He started to bloat/swell all over the body and no one (Nurse, Consultant, Doctors etc) noticed that the drip they gave to him was sugary until it was too late and he died aged 68 year.

This is just one off uncountable cases/life that have been lost unnecessarily due to all hospital negligence in Nigeria.

I agree that the hospital might have the best medical brains but when there is no compassion shown to patients by medical personnel in Nigeria then your medical degree/knowledge is nothing.

Also if the UCH management can still say that they offer "excellent medical service", then we have real problem in Nigeria and it is really shameful.

Nigerian Doctors are something else. Their pomposity is too much, we will all die some day when its appointed time. Those who are healthy do not know what God has done for them and still is doing for them.
There is no such thing as "appointed time" for death. People literally cut their lives short by certain practices and look forward to miracles saving them. Some get faced with technical issues and instead of dealing with them appropriately, they accept the circumstances and term it "God's will". Don't be ignorant.

This statement is a complete lie. if all Staff in Accident emergency keeps going for leave anytime someone dies on their watch, I wonder who will remain on duty.
Even in the developed world, nobody goes on leave following a death on their watch. please don't confuse Police with Medical Practitioners.
Thank you.

I just intensely dislike mistruths and half truths and blatant misdirections and misrepresentations in life.

You didn't answer the question though.

You know for a fact that the requested investigations had no role whatsoever to play in your diagnosis, treatment or general outcome?

The notable and unfortunate thing about the hospital's rejoinder is the complete lack of empathy and the implied blame of the deceased. No condolences to the family of the deceased. From my own experience, most Nigerian medical personnel are heartless and a mirror of the Nigerian society.

You are a doctor, I get it. But don't generalise, pls. Private hospitals are different from public hospitals. In public hospitals, there may not anyone in particular to put the blame on. In fact, doctor(s) may not even involve in the negligence.
Take for instance, the story of a boy was placed on empty oxygen tank and that particular nurse who wasn't even care at all.
Negligence is not uncommon in many professions, including medical profession.

Hmmmm.... Actually, that is not correct also.
Medical personals will continue to work in their respective station until the conclusion of the coroner's investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. This can take as much as a year sometimes. if the person is found answerable, then he/she would have to face a disciplinary panel. You can't just excuse a Medical practitioner from duty like that.

Chief, l dont know why l think l might know the person behind this account. Anyways, pls leave ignorant Nigerians alone. No matter what you tell them, they wont learn. The Bible has concluded thier matter, when It said, "My people die because of lack of Knowledge".
I have preached it a million times, sometimes l get tired preaching it, your health is your responsiblity. When the President son needed maximum health care, whr did he take his son to? Was dr no National Hospital in Abj, with Neurosurgeons? Nigerians elites know better.
However, because some people went to secondary school and can join words together, they think they are wise or wiser than the person directing them to whom they should hold responsible for the problems in health care delivery in Nigeria.

You are very right about this. In fact, this is how it happens most of the time.

But in certain instances, like this one where someone raised serious allegations after a loss of life, the affected staff is usually suspended.

This UCH incident is a very similar to another that happened in Queensland, Australia. The doctor was suspended after allegations were raised against him. The coroner investigation came after his suspension.

A Queensland doctor has been suspended after the death of a patient 10 days ago at the Murgon Hospital in the South Burnett.

The doctor was stood down over allegations that his slow response to an emergency may have contributed to a patient's death.

The doctor was on call at the time.

He has been referred to the Crime and Misconduct Commission and the death is to be investigated by the state coroner.

They should forget that story. My dad kept telling me he hopes he never has an emergency in Nigeria. He was in a national assignment when he collapsed and was taking to UCH. He was vomiting blood because he had gastrointestinal bleeding. The idiots at UCH took thier time and were asking questions while the man was dying. Very unprofessional medical personnel in this country. I hope they also get killed by the system thier attitude has killed.Doctors in countries like Syria work under the most terrible conditions but they do q better job saving lives than Nigerian doctors

You will only know till you experience it (May you not IJN!).

I didn't want to respond to the earlier story because it was too emotional for me. I had first hand experience of both UCH and UBTH. Especially that aspect that patients are frequently used for "teaching" medical students. You rarely see the consultants until such occasions or on very very brief visit if you are lucky or connected.

I had three bad experiences with these people.

It goes without saying that patients themselves play a greater role in their own morbidity and mortality.
After jumping from chemist to chemist, from traditional healer to spiritual healer, they then come to the hospital at the 11th hour, expecting a miracle.
Nigerians need to get gigantic mirrors so they can take a long hard look at themselves.
When I see such patients come to the clinic or the emergency, i look on them with pity, cos they succeeded in wasting scarce money on the wrong treatment, yet worsening their condition.

Just went through the article you cited. Unfortunately, I couldn't see any correlation. this is because the case wasn't discussed.
From the little that I got from there, it is obvious that it has already been established that there was a delay in service rendering thus leading to the suspension.
In the UCH's case in question, the alleged delay has been disproved.
Nobody goes on leave before being proven guilty in Medical practice.

Are you contradicting/denying the professional irresponsibility for which most doctors in Nigeria are known for?

This kind of unconscionable attempt to cover up and explain away criminal negligence can only take place in this country...

You can't say "most" doctors are irresponsible, thats a fallacy.

If not, that I have friends n fam, in d medical line, who have been of great help, in my time of need. I for call, sopono, ontop ur head! angry

It actually took several personal interventions, from close friends, to attend to a relative, in emergency(after 10+hours on d tarmac outside d ward) who was discharged from d same luth, barely a week earlier.

I nearly lost my mum, last year. One private n one general hospice, were demanding to surgically operate. I insisted on a 3rd opinion, cos d symptoms I was told, weren't consistent with any operation. Lantoro discovered, partial stroke! Any knife around her, it was kaput!

Don't let me go on, abeg. Nowadays, I read up n walk out or demand a change in medics, immediately I start hearing jargons!

A stupid medical friend, actually told me, to my face, Lab tests, are a waste of time n resources!shocked And, was mocking foreign trained medics.
