A python weighing a whopping ten stone has undergone a pioneering CAT scan for her lung problems.

Hanna the snake who is nearly 19 feet long had to be folded up to fit in the machine at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio.

She underwent the scan after suffering respiratory problems.

Zoo staff used the groundbreaking technology after noting she had swelling on her face and there was concern that it might be an early indication of infection.

The swollen area noted by the animal care team was confirmed by the veterinary team to be glandular tissue.


'Hanna will be on antibiotics for two weeks to clear the infection.'


The zoo is one of just six in the U.S. with computerised axial tomography (CAT)technology on site.

They say the CAT scanner will allow vets to understand the interior of any animal including animal with a hard exterior like a shell.

A CT scan or CAT scan, also known as computed tomography scan, makes use of computer-processed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional (tomographic) images (virtual "slices") of specific areas of a scanned object, allowing the user to see inside the object or body without cutting.

Other terms include computed axial tomography (CAT scan) and computer aided tomography.



Price ranges include the system itself and installation.


Applications training, site drawings, and annual service agreements, warranties, ranging from $50,000 - $150,000(₦18m - ₦54m)
