During the Nigerian Civil War of 1967 - 1970, in an attempt to halt the Nigerian military advance, retreating Biafran soldiers destroyed the River Niger Bridge at Onitsha, trapping the Nigerians on the other side of the river. During President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan administration, the bridge was rehabilitated by replacing two spans on the Onitsha end of the Bridge that was damaged during the civil war with a fourteen-foot wide bailey, at an estimated cost of 1.5million pound...

When we still have a functioning country, it took roughly a year to construct this massive bridge. But it will take YEARS to construct something similar in this generation.

So PDP built the Niger Bridge between 1964 and 1965, and it was commissioned in December 1965.

my brother , tgis is mysterious, I can't seem to understand y it difficult to do aboda bridge again even with advancement in technology. Nigeria of yesterday was obviously beta than naija of today. The problem of nigeria is "everybody's property" is actually no one's property. Let's not pretend, every Nigerian hates the fact that we are in one space with such diversity in everything so each one is struggling for his share of the cake. Hate is the reason for our backwardness.

The Niger Bridge more popularly referred to as the Onitsha Bridge is of Nigeria’s most economically crucial bridges. It was constructed between 1964 and 1965, and it was commissioned in December 1965.

The Bridge links the South-Western and the South-Southern region of the country to the South-East. The Bridge has its two ends both in Asaba, Delta State and Onitsha, Anambra state.

Apart from being host to one of the largest marketplaces in all of West Africa, Onitsha also happens to be the gateway to the densely populated eastern region.

So, prior to the construction of the famous Onitsha Bridge in 1966, how were people traveling to the East?

Well, in the early 1960s, travels across the river Niger to the eastern part of Nigeria was achieved with the means of river ferries of various sizes.

Below are photographs of showing travelers at the jetties and landing points at Asaba end of the river in 1961.

There's just something so "beautiful" about history never minding if it was a positive experience or not. It reminds you of how little your space is in the grand scheme of things; beckons on you to toe the path of humility as no matter what you've done or will do, someone has done,is about to do or will surpass it in the future (another history)

Life indeed is amazing. Choose to enjoy it despite the horrendous hardship in the land and heartbreaking bitterness and wickedness in the hearts of men.

I just remembered Chike and the River.
Exactly!

When Chike and the River was first published, the Niger Bridge would have been under construction...so most people would have been using the ferry.
