The whole bridge wasn't destroyed, it was only the onitsha end that was destroyed, more than 75% of the bridge was still intact after the onitsha end demolition.
It was simply to halt the advancement of the Nigerian troops from the Midwest. After that, the incursion mainly came through Benue/Enugu.
What Gowon did was to rehabilitate and reconstruct what was left of it.
