PHILIPPINE SEA (March 24, 2018) Marines assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 mount 1,000-pound guided bomb units (GBU) onto an F-35B Lightning II aircraft on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) while underway in the Philippine Sea, March 24, 2018. This event marked the first time an F-35 Lightning II has been loaded with live ordnance at sea during an operational deployment. GBU-32s are GPS guided joint direct attack munitions that attach to VMFA 121’s F-35Bs. As the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed Marine Expeditionary Unit, the 31st MEU provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations. lionel4power:it looks like most strikes were carried out using stand off cruise missiles, considering even royal air force Tornados jets launched storm shadow cruise missiles targets in syria. the threat from russia likely prompted america and its allies to use stand off attack missiles |

The program for the development of a new Japanese fighter can be jeopardized by the retirement (and even gradual dying) of aircraft designers. The old generation, which is a quarter of a century ago engaged in the development of combat aircraft, has a unique experience that can be irretrievably lost. In any case, this is the opinion of the Society of Japanese Aviation and Space Companies, which appealed to the Ministry of Defense of Japan with a request to launch the project of developing a new fighter as soon as possible. The last major project to develop a combat aircraft in Japan was implemented in the late 1980s - early 1990s. Then, the development of the fighter Mitsubishi F-2, which was based on the American F-16 Fighting Falcon. Compared to the base aircraft, the F-2 received an elongated fuselage, as well as a wing and a horizontal tail feather of a larger area. In general, Japan's participation in the joint project with the US F-2 was 60 percent. This was done on purpose. In those years, the Japanese economy was going through a bad period, and the organization of a joint project for the development of fighters, instead of direct purchase, allowed the creation of additional jobs. In parallel, within the framework of the joint project, the Japanese industry was able to obtain certain technologies for the production of aviation alloys, on-board electronic equipment and radar installations. F-2 fighters entered the arsenal of the Air Self-Defense Forces of Japan in 2000. Serially these planes were produced from 1996 to 2011. Today they are already out of date, and after a decade they will require replacement. And they realize this in the government. In the current year or next year, Tokyo should decide whether new fighters will be purchased abroad to replace the F-2, for example, the US, or they should be developed independently. The decision has not been made yet, but it is known that the new aircraft will receive the designation F-3 in service. In the event that the authorities still decide to buy foreign planes, this will happen in the framework of a joint project in which the Japanese side will be responsible for the creation of engines, airborne equipment or weapons; looking as agreed. According to the Japanese military, new fighters will be needed by the year 2030. Meanwhile, the purchase of foreign aircraft, as believed in the Society of Japanese Aviation and Space Companies (a kind of union of the Japanese aircraft industry), will cause the loss of important design experience. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, a project of a technology demonstrator for a fifth generation X-2 fighter, also known as ATD-X Shinshin, was developed in Japan. This plane made the first flight in April last year. Currently, the project is suspended, since its main goal is considered to be achieved - the aircraft has made several flights and proved that Japanese designers are capable of designing combat aircraft. The Society of Japanese aerospace companies do not agree with this interpretation. The fact is that there were only a few flights of the X-2, and neither the weapon systems nor the aerodynamic interaction of the aircraft with pendant missiles and bombs were checked on the plane. That is, within the framework of the projects a very fast and maneuverable small aircraft was created, which in its present form can not be called a fighter. And, in fact, in Japan there are simply no designers who would have had experience of creating fighters. On the part of Japan, 340 designers participated in the F-2 project. For comparison, the American side in the project was represented only by 80 engineers. According to the Japanese society, today only 20 percent of those designers continue to work in Japan's aviation industry, and the rest have moved to other companies or retired. And while they were not completely lost in the heavenly blue, it would be good if these designers could convey their experience to the younger generation. And in order for this experience to be transmitted, the Japanese aviation society believes that the F-3 fighter development program should be started as early as possible. In the event that it will be possible to start right now, the first prototype F-3 can be lifted into the air already in 2024-2025. If you delay with the beginning of the project, then the development of the aircraft will take significantly longer, simply because some knowledge will have to be restored from scratch.

karthi90:IRST is subset of EOTS generically IRST is infra red search and track EOTS is electro optical targeting system Think of EOTS as targeting pod + IRST AMCA is a swing role fighter meant to replace mig 27 jaguars mirage 2000 ie ground attack elements. The position of the pod in AMCA unique not on top as seen for IRST nor at bottom as seen for EOTS but inbetween , what does it imply ? Anyways let the official word come out , then we can be sure. |

karthi90:This is not samukyta , it's a new system and it contains elements of himshakti (I made a mistake previously when I said it did not) Don't have additional info All i can say this is a modular system , the various modules can act together to provide comprehensive domination of the entire EM spectrum or sub systems of it can be used for specific needs as per requirements. Also Logistic / support footprint is minimum. |

karthi90:This was utilized on the last test of Rustom 2 Only problem as of now is to get the weight of the UAV down. Seriously the project managers should have their ass kicked weight optimisation should be a priority right before FSED. I guess the developers were more concerned about getting it in the air. Now they will have to sweat more ![]() |

| Re: Technical Discussions On International Military Equipments Doctrines Tactics Etc by tdayof(m): 10:09am On Apr 14, 2018 |
nemesis4u:Nope. The UAV design won't allow for it and plus maintaining the VLO characteristics, we are able to achieve a very perfect result aerodynamically while also considering desired results in terms of stealth. I am aware some designs paramenters will end up changing when the aircraft is done with production. Those will also be addressed. |
