In what could be described as last minute response to the deadly and incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) has said it is set to hold a conference aimed at reviewing and making recommendations on the May 1979 Free Movement Treaty as well as sharing regional data.Source: https://leadership.ng/2018/04/10/farmers-herders-clash-ecowas-moves-to-review-movement-treaty/amp/ Front Page: Lalasticlala

Doubt the free movement clause will go away. The most likely thing to happen the agree on joint border patrols, bio metric passports and more information sharing. Other than that not much will change. |

He said he is optimistic that the conference will treat the issue of irregular migration holistically without criminalising it, considering the contiguous nature of the borders within the region.I don't understand the logic behind these type of statements. What does the contiguous nature of borders have to do with anything? There are legal means to travel to between ECOWAS countries so there's excuse to engage in illegal migration. The people breaking law should be criminalized since according to president alot of the criminals are foreigners. Front Page: Lalasticlala |

Only a stupendous region like ECOWAS allow free movement of herders from one country to another in the subregion in this age of agricultural mechanization. Open grazing must be outlawed. |

Idiotic pigs of Biafra can see, is not buhari's fault that a foreign herders are freely crossing into Nigeria. Idiotic pigs of Biafra can hold ECOWAS responsible. Blue3k: |

It seems to be another backdoor attempt by Fulani leaders to use treaty recommendations to back their useless calls for grazing routes and special treatment for Fulani militia terrorist herdsmen. And the person who said irregular migration holistically should be treated without criminalising it must be very stupid. This is 2018 for fuc.k sake and some buffoons still wants us doing things the stone age way. 'Backwarders'. |

buhariguy:I don't know why your mentioning but ok. Anyway your half right at best on your points becsuse Buhari can do more. The ECOWAS provisions are only art of the issue. The major issue is insecure border and no enforcement of the provisions in question being free movement if people and ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol of 1998. The Free move clause Requires you have your documents. The people also have to travel through official check points and can only stay for 90 days before they need visa. If the herdsmen are from Libya mali or doing irregular migration that's the issue. The Transhumance Protocol has 5 requirements. Let's focus on the 5th requirement. How many of these foreign herdsmen carry these documents anyway? I don't think Nigeria knows who 90% of these guys are. i. Each country sets its entry and exit;Anyway I think the 1998 protocol should be tossed on bushes. They can still sell goods but they shouldn't be looking for their grazing land. Just bring you cattle here for sell in market. If they need fodder it can be grown and sold. The free movement clause can stay as is. The country just needs to secure borders. |

Are they trying to divert blame? What of the ghanian president that ordered shoot at sight on any cow sighted trespassing, is he not a president and a member of ecowas? The useless security chiefs know what to do. |

Nigeria is the only country in the world where terrorists come through it's borders at will, decimate entire communities , claim responsibility for such actions then the govt decide to give the terrorists land called grazing colonies as big as entire LGA's in every state of the federation. Nigeria is the only country in the world where after a terrorist claims responsibility for killings and destruction, the FG vehemently defends the terrorist instead of prosecuting them. Nigeria under Buhari is a joke, I'm seriously beginning to consider a secession from this country just like Nnamdi Kanu suggested, at least under such an arrangement, Fulani terrorists won't be able to come to my country under Buhari's idíotic protection to unleash mayhem without dire consequences |

TheFreeOne:Your prediction is the most likely scenario. The Federal government pushed for the cattle colonies and have support in northern states. The grazing routes won't be too far behind and can easily be achieved if they limited it to sport the cattle colonies are. I don't see them changing 1998 protocol much. Front Page: Lalasticlala |

RZArecta2:I need an excuse to bump thread. You also won't be able to change minds if you don't engage people in civil discourse. Even if he doesn't agree he gets new information he mught not know about. Lastly I want lala to give the thread front page stimulus package but the thread isn't must enough for him. Esseite:The always claimed it was foreign herders. I don't understand how they came to that conclusion. How man of these herdsmen that have ever been arrested are non Nigerian on record. |
