Nigeria’s total domestic and foreign debt stocks as at June 30 stood at about $15.1 billion and N14.1 trillion respectively, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.

A review of the total foreign debt profile of the Federal and the 36 states governments and the FCT also shows a continuous rise since the coming of the present administration, from $10.718 billion in 2015, to $11.406 billion in 2016 and $15.047 billion in 2017.

Out of the current total figure of $15.047 billion, the Federal Government accounts for $11.106 billion, or about 74 per cent, while the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja owe about $3.94 billion, or 26 per cent.

The Federal and State government shares of the debt stock grew from $7.349 billion and $3.369 billion in 2015, to $7.84 billion and $3.568 billion in 2016, and $3.94 billion and $11.106 billion in 2017 respectively.

The NBS gave further disaggregation of the country’s foreign debt to include $9.67billion as multilateral debt; $218.25million as bilateral (AFD) and $5.15billion from the Exim Bank of China credit to the Federal Government.

A debt that is equal to one years income and just 10% of GDP is not a serious debt.
OP. Pls get some education. Nigeria is one of the most under-debted countries in the world

Our foreign debt is always valued in the more stable currency of dollars, the currency in which it was incurred.

I don't expect you to know that being a blockhead.

The total debt was 63 billion dollars.

You and Jonathan are thieves.

You are a mendacious oaf. You are using the collapse of the Naira to convey the impression that Nigeria doesn't owe much. The audacity of you fecal-brained propagandists is mind-boggling!

If the government had N160bn in debt in 2014 and N305bn in 2018, the fact that both figures equate to $1bn at the official exchange rate does not mean the debt hasn't increased. This is particularly so if most of the government's debt is Naira denominated.

I hope they pay you well for the drivel you come out with.

Shut up you deadbrained platypus.

The DMO gave the total debt in dollars (63 Billion big ones) and that would always be the currency in which the debt would be valued.

Are you suggesting if the government decides by fiat tomorrow that 1 Dollar is equal to 100 Naira we can then reduce our debt simply by that fiat?

The debt profile would always be in dollars if you don't like it kill yourself.

Numbskull.

Between 2012 and 2015, Jonathan borrowed the equivalence of $15 billion dollars and earned high income from oil at average of $100 per barrel, with nothing to show for it. So far, between 2015 and 2018, Buhari had borrowed $7 billion dollars with lots of capital projects to show for it

With all the hundreds of abandoned projects by your party and hero, you want a reasonable Govt to start initiating project? For 16 years your PDP could not complete any project but you want APC to initiate and complete a project within 2 and a half years? What of the Abuja Airport that was rehabilitated within a record time? This project has been begging for attention for over a decade , but your looting party could not do anything about it. The Kaduna Abuja rail that was started by your looting paty could not be completed for 16 years, but the Buhari admin completed it. You PDP.ig should be shamed of yourselves.

Kindly look up the Abuja to Kaduna line and you will see that it was completed in 2014.Was the present government in charge as at then? All your president did was to buy few locomotives and take a ride in them and for that, he had to go on a borrowing spree to do that. Stop lying. The Abuja - Kaduna rail line was not operational until Jonathan left. If the rail project were completed and commissioned by Jonathan, how come the rail line was not in operation before Jonathan left and after he left office?

Jonathan that was desperate towards the end of his administration, will showcase buying a pen as achievement.

Read here to see the true picture of things.

This is a January 2016 news report about the status of the Project....

Hope dims on N170 billion Abuja-Kaduna rail project

According to a contract agreement signed with the Federal Government on October 22, 2009, the Chinese construction firm was expected to complete the job in 46 months which should have been in December 2014. Yet, at present, most of the critical aspects of the project are still under construction.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, citing insufficient resources to fund the nation’s entire budgetary needs, had announced that his administration had secured about $900,000,000.00 from the China Export and Import Bank, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation with the active support of the then Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The credit facility which was granted under the permission of the Chinese government, stipulated that the loan would be released in tranches by way of shipment of hardware such as steel rail tracks, structural equipment, earth movers, concrete bridges, Chinese trucks, concrete sleepers, precast T-beams, for the laying of rail tracks covering 187 kilometres.

Other components of the project such as the provision of modern railway engines, cabins of various categories, personnel, securing frequency band for communications, are the sole responsibility of the Federal Government through the Transportation Ministry.

According to an investigation, the level of track laying so far is about 80 per cent completed though it had been about 70 per cent just before the last general elections.

It is expected that the remaining 20 or 30 per cent work on track laying as well as completion of the nine stop stations should have been completed by now.

Also, none of the proposed nine stop stations has been completed, even as the pace of work remains slow.

There is hope, however, that with the present administration’s determination to ensure complete infrastructural development in the country, due attention will be paid to the completion of the project.
