It was a very funny idea when I raised the idea that igbos all over the world and in the different parts of this country need to be levied so as to get the required funds for developing the region because the government do not have enough money to make the project see the limelight. Even if they dare go into these projects, it will be grossly under-funded and it will look like all these secondary school projects. If we really want to make a difference, we need money. I mean plenty money but if we think release 2000 naira only by leviable adults (employed workers and entrepeneurs) to finance projects in the region is making stupid comments, then I have nothing to say about the development of the region.

It is imperative we see these projects as a collective work to make the region more economically viable to enable our businessmen and our talented youths to stay back and improve on our hardwork over time.

You are right...

Take PRODA ENUGU as an example...It was established in 1971 to hasten technological developments...but it is largely not properly funded.

About PRODA
PRODA was a creation of the defunct East Central State Government under Edict No. II of 1971. It was charged with the broad function of generating and catalyzing industrialization by carrying out industrial research from the laboratory stage to the pilot plant stage, and by rendering consultancy services to Governments, industry and individuals.
It is, therefore, one of the oldest Research Institutes in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST).

PRODA was seen as the beacon of light for the nigerian science and technology at the time but they starved of funding and it died naturally without strangulation. What we need now is funds and the right mindset towards development, then we will not be rivaled. You and i know that we will have reached a very high place in technology and science if PRODA had the right attention and funding it needs.

It is going to take ages for us to come to pursue a single future as a people owing to the setting of governance we are presently facing in the country today. We hope we younger generations can fight more to make us come together so that we can achieve more as a people than we have achieved as individuals.

King Jaja of Opobo's Dibia

When the British wanted to exile King Jaja, they tricked him that he would be taken to London to meet with the British Crown, whom he had assisted to quell the Ashanti uprising. His Dibia told he that if he steps out, he will come back as a corpse. Jaja told the British what his Dibia said, and they laughed it off.
.
Jaja arrived the ship, the British arrested him and tried him in Accra, Ghana, then took him to London for some time, where he met Queen Victoria and was her guest in Buckingham Palace. After some other turbulent history, he was exiled to Saint Vincent in the West Indies. Plans were also made for him to be relocated to Barbados.
.
In 1891, Jaja was granted permission to return to Opobo. The British were excited that the Dibia would be proved a fake. However, King Jaja died on his way back to Africa, allegedly poisoned with a cup of tea.
.
Moral of this story:
When the choice is between your Dibia and the British, listen to your Dibia. Secondly, whenever your liberty is abridged, stay away from your captors' cup of tea.

Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you to our forum. In this forum, we shall be discoursing the political and economic progress of the eastern parts of Nigeria with a view to finding a united viewpoint on many of the issues affecting the whole region, and the nation at large.

The Igbo people of Nigeria are known from the pre colonial era to be great farmers and traders who practised one of most beautiful forms of leadership styles in the world. The Igbos, although without any highly recognizable rulers were able to conduct their societies in peace and prosperity through some of the best laws in Africa, enforceable by youths, with the command of titled elders who make decisions on what is right or wrong. Punishment for offences are known and are meted out to the offenders without bias.

The coming of the white man brought with it a lot of changes to the established way of life of the Igbo nation and the whole of the region. Warrant chiefs were appointed to oversee a lot of areas, mainly as a way to enforce taxation of adults and enforcement of British laws on the populace. This change brought with it the need to go to school, and Igbos embraced education in their numbers. Education in turn brought enlightenment, and on the flip side, a tradition of societal problems, like the abandonment of our communities to pursue education, employment and opportunities outside the region.

The Igbo nation has fared well in many areas, but a lot of work still needs to be done to keep the whole region on the part of progress. We need to keep tabs on our political leadership, we need to push them towards the policies which will guarantee our political and economic survival, and increased pace of development. We need to push them to create the enabling environment we need for industrialisation, which will bringemployment and keep our youths occupied and wealthy.

The architecture would have been perfect if the strip was designed more for people walking rather than cars. It would have given room for more greenery and made it instantly more pleasing to the eyes and a real looker... What does a lawyer know?

I thought this thread will be a complete departure from the usual showcasing of SE which we have seen all over NL.

I was expecting thread where brainstorming on economic issues will be done. A thread that will chart a course for Igbo economic integration and economic independence through joint infrastructure and investment.

If that is not the case then the aim is defeated already.

Southwest Governors To Bid For Murtala Muhammed Airport Concession

https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2018/03/28/southwest-governors-to-bid-for-murtala-muhammed-airport-concession/

I brought this up for a purpose. These guys are thinking regionally ahead. Let us look at the regional map including Delta(Anioma) and Rivers(Igbo).

We can even draw government agencies and commissioners from the east to this thread to tap from some of brainstorming and delivery of ideas.

I'm still trying to digest the photos from Ebonyi state.
Honestly, I didn't realize that Ebonyi is this open. The state has very little online presence, so laid back and anonymous.

I should visit the state before this year comes to an end. Thanks for the pictures and information.

I'm not sure what other state you should do next, as the rest have much online presence, especially here on NL. I would suggest Abia next, as Imo and Enugu has been covered to a great extent in other threads. Next to Ebonyi, Abia has little online showing.

HOW CAN WE BUILD HOUSING ESTATES WITH LIMITED LAND SPACE THAT CAN CATER FOR ATLEAST 100MILLION PEOPLE IN THE NEXT 30YEARS

This is an important question that I have been wanting to ask in the last 3years that I been following the development of the eastern region. The igbos are a people who are fascinated in having their own structure under their name and design, so they go all the way to erect structures just to prove a point. The disadvantage is that with an increase and unchecked construction of buildings in the east, the roads and drainage are been crowded with little or no space for walkways and proper designing of the cities. If we keep allowing these things to continue, we will be having a concrete jungle with little or no aesthetics, dangers of road accidents (now prevalent in the east) and constant erosion.

The question is this, can this be planned in such a way that you dont really need to have your own structure and fence but you can have a housign estate well-planned and designed to accommodate everything necessary for comfortable living. You can buy a big apartment in a very big skyscrapper and you live your life without thinking of who will lock the gates.

Angola built the kilamba housing estate to alleviate the housing deficit in the capital of Luanda in 2012, the housing estate seems to be one of the most beautiful cities in africa and we can dare to imitate that. If we put our environment as a priority in the purchase and development of properties, we will be indirectly solving quantum problems bedeviling the region.

How can we finally solve the housing deficit in the region and also projecting future population explosion.

Experts please.
Me thinks it is a progression. Surely, the current swaths of estates littered with palatial duplexes and bungalows will not serve future Igbo needs. There has to be a review of our housing policy to cater for the imminent population surge in Igboland. Onitsha,Aba,New Heaven and Achara Layout sections of Enugu may look like concrete jungles but truthfully, they were all well designed as can be seen, when you consider it has similar clusters as Barcelona and Warsaw, except the latter duo were better planned with functional facilities and a practical recourse to nature and green areas as cardinal state policies.Already, the clusters at most parts the aforementioned Igbo cities were created to cater for high human density. Some sections of Awada and Ugwuabga Obosi have only 4 and 5 storey buildings. All are needed are slight remodeling and better services. This is where facility management experts will come in. Attached are pictures of upscale and modest Barcelona residential areas.Change will come in due time.

Bro, if it is the usual showing of pictures from state to state, the forum is already awash with it. Let us focus on economic issues, let this be a total departure from the usual threads where we have been showcasing projects both public and private. I was thinking it's gonna be a blending thread for the home residents and abroad residents to brainstorm on investment opportunities both in private and public sector. Let the thread have a direction, and not just random show of the states. Showcasing of investment potentials in the region, like oil/gas, coal, and other mineral resources in the region. Let the discussion drive towards regional development including Igbos in Delta, Rivers, etc. My take though.

how do these people breathe, it seems they are just all over the place.

Though we might not be escape these pictures you pasted, as you said, it will be helpful if the drainage and greenery is preserved because the number of people that will be sharing scarce oxygen will be too much. Plants are known to release oxygen to the surrounding, so it will be in reducing the air pollution due to the high density of people in these areas.

The only sad part is that the government is not doing anything prepare for this. When it will come, we do not know what to do then.

We should stop calling all our Malls "Shoprite". As though the mall is just a store or mere supermarket. It belittles it so much. Its like calling every detergent "Klin" or "Omo".

ShopRite is just an anchor in the mall. So what will you then call the mall if Shoprite leaves?
A mall is bigger than one department store whether it's Kingsway, Bata or Shoprite.

I noticed that in Lagos they called their Ikeja Mall and Jabi lake mall in Abuja, Though shoprite anchored in both malls. We should take pride in calling these edifices by their proper name Ebonyi Mall or Abakaliki Mall. Onitsha Mall, Asaba Mall, Polo-Park mall.

We need to look into this before we are faced with the biggest problem of the century, homelessness. We should start having ideas that can give us the right design and healthy environment because of our increase in population and future economic expansion.

Agriculture has been the mainstay of Igbo pre colonial era, forming the economy of the region. Cultivation of crops, fruit trees, fish farming and animal husbandry sustained the culinary needs of the people. People also moved from place to place to buy and sell one good or the other to those in need of them.

There are vast areas of arable land in all the whole of the region, crops like cassava, yams, cocoyam, native beans, rice, maize and groundnuts provided bountiful harvest for those who cultivate them.
First, there has to be a review of current land holding practises. The present situation is individual, family and littered communal land holds that, when considered individually, can hardly encourage and motivate mechanized and large scale farming for future planning. A merge of existing lands where the soil tests proves fertile for large and mechanised farming will prove a boost for us in the nearest future. Recently,i saw pictures of onions, carrots, cabbage and cucumber being grown and harvested in Igbo land. These were some of the staple crops we thought as kids can only grow in the mambila plateau areas in the middle belt. Already there are effective faculties of Agriculture and Agricultural research institutes at Umudike and UNN.
Attached below are large scale ranch in Argentina and large scale farms in Mexico where progressive land holding practices are in place. We live to learn and apply what works others in our own domain given space constraints.
