Mouthpis:it is difficult because the environment is conducive for them. you can only reduce their population. there are efforts to wipe out disease carry species of mosquitoes (Google "wolbachia in dengue fever eradication"  . it can be successful, but the main issue is to prevent environment damage and pollution during the process as in the case of DDT in malaria eradication. 4 Likes |

neonly:no! you've got it wrong. the mosquito has no ecological value. it is not playing any beneficial role in the niche it occupies. animals that prey on the mosquito, can also prey on other insects. wiping out the mosquito biologically will have little or no consequence to nature. 4 Likes |

chrisbaxtian:U are absolutely right bro, whatever mosquito do to plants like he said up they can as well be done by other insects. As far as I am concerned the only thing mosquitoes does is to spread malaria. One thing he said that I like is, how it can be eradicated harmlessly to humans. |

If you look at the lifecycle of a mosquito you will realise some species are breed in permanent bodies of water and can survive in polluted water as well as fresh water , acid water, brackish water swams. Hot and humid climate is also necessary for their survival so eliminating mosquitoes by environmental control alone will be a long shot. However if you include a biological method like say to bioengineer a virus that can sterilize the male/female population and be transmitted quite effectively you will improve your chances of elimination. The major disadvantage with this approach is the chance of the virus mutating to infect and harm other useful insects, livestock, even humans! |
