Twitter To Roll Out Encrypted DMs by AfricAryan(op):
Twitter is one of the most popular social networking platforms out there, and it is slowly becoming an official platform as notable organizations and personalities use it. However, Twitter’s end-to-end direct messaging (DM) service has seen a number of leak incidences. Given what happened with Facebook and the new (crucial) data privacy awareness of internet users, people have speculated since 2013 that Twitter would soon join Facebook, Whatsapp, and other social networking giants to adopt encrypted end-to-end direct messaging.

Five years later, Twitter is now testing this encrypted end-to-end direct messaging. Twitter’s encrypted DMs, dubbed ‘Secret Conversation,’ has now been seen on their latest Android package. With Twitter’s encrypted end-to-end direct messaging, no hacker or government agency can intercept users’ DMs.

How to Send Secure DMs on Twitter

For now, Twitter’s encrypted end-to-end direct messaging is only available to a few users, and this is for testing purposes. Note that Whatsapp and other messengers like Apple iMessage have beefed-up communications similar to Twitter’s encrypted end-to-end direct messaging, but Twitter’s is different because all your communications are not encrypted by default like in others.

works like that of Facebook Messenger, where users are required to opt to start a ‘secret text message.’  In order to use Twitter’s encrypted DMs. Here’s how to use it.

1. Open the Twitter app on your device.
2. Start a new DM with the tweep you want to talk with secretly. It also works with existing chats.
3. The information icon is located at the top right corner of your screen. Tap this icon.
4. To send an encrypted message, select ‘Start a secret text message.’
5. A new window opens, and you can then send your messages there.

One downside of Twitter’s encrypted end-to-end direct messages is that it may not be available for the web and desktop Twitter versions. This is because Twitter does not offer the privacy of encryption keys of users that are required to decrypt and encrypt DMs.

Twitter is not only working on the encrypted DMs; they are also working on a mode called ‘Data Saver’ mode that, just like the encrypted end-to-end direct messages, will work only on the app. Data Saver mode will disable video autoplay and load high-quality images in order to save some your bandwidth and data (duh) and, in turn, speed up the app.
