CONVERSATIONS FROM WITHIN

He walked out of the office politely. It was necessary for him to do so with much politeness, anything short of politeness would put him in a dangerous position. Not a position that would risk his life, but one that would risk his chance of getting what he had been seeking for.

He was not really happy that the head of the department of exams and records at the university's registry asked him to go and come back tomorrow. For God's sake, he had been waiting for her for several hours, checking up on her in between times, without she telling her that she would not be chanced to give proper attention to helping him solve the issue he had brought to her.

But he chose not to let the unhappiness last. Letting it last was not going to do him good. He must maintain courage and proper attitude else he would make a repeat again of what put him into the problem he was in.

Dave had finished schooling at the university but had not been certified a graduate. He was one of the students whose results had issues. The issues were many, ranging from missing examination scripts, sharing a registration number with a fellow class mate for ad long as a session and close to a semester without his knowledge and the interdepartmental transfer. Part of his results from his previous department was not found even though they were intact at the point of transfer. Whatever the issue was, what lead to it was making things difficult for him.

It has been almost six years after school and yet, he could not boast of a certificate. He didn't even have it, he was yet to get it. Why? The whole issues regarding his results were hindering that, and as such he had gone through difficult times due to years of joblessness.

Joblessness and unemployment had been the greatest problem affecting the young people in Nigeria. Most young, gifted, intelligent and talented people leave school and end up not even getting a job, a meaningful employment, a regular and fair paying job, even with good results for some and many, with their certificates.

If many with certificates struggle to get jobs and still battle with joblessness, what would you think Dave's daily life problems were like since he didn't even have a tertiary education certificate at all? How would he get a job in a country that had so much obsession with the so called golden paper- the certificate, without any evaluation and consideration of the individual's skills, competence and intelligence?

Many after getting so frustrated, resort to other means to earn a living. Some get involved in shady deals like scams- 419, yahoo yahoo, bank account frauds, armed robbery, immoral sexual engagements- sugar daddies and sugar mummies stuffs, rapes, rituals and other fetish stuffs and more.

He had thought of things like that. Though not the 'big' evil things. Bank account scams and fraud was a 'lesser' evil in his mind since he would not have a face to face deal with the bank account owner. And it would require less tools for operations compared to armed robbery which would require guns, detailed planning, not getting caught, and face to face encounter and even an encounter with the police (if its the normal Nigerian police, forget it. An encounter with him is not anything close to a threat to the success of robbery business). Fetish stuffs like ritual killings, other like kidnappings would really 'kill his conscience.

After all, he resolved not to attempt any of these. His faith was a force that prevailed over his considering an evil option for survival.

As he walked away to go home to get some rest, he noticed that he was having a conversation within.

"So, is that it?"

"What?", he asked.y

"You heard me. Is that it? Getting depressed again as usual and unhappy and looking for who to pour your venom on? Is that all you've got?"

He knew what he was asked. This was not the first time, it was a voice from within.

"No" he replied the voice.

The voice continued, "Well that's good. I am impressed. Because this is where you throw in the towel. This is where you walk away. This is where you play dead hoping that the problem would just disappear. But if you have stayed long enough down here on earth and if you are as intelligent as you say that you are, you would know that no problem disappears. They don't like disappearing. You have to make them disappear. You have to fight and aim to be the last man standing. You have to push and even bend while pushing but then you would discover that what does not destroy or kill you makes you stronger"

He nodded.

The voice continued, "Nothing is free in this life. Everything has a price. There are some prices that others have paid for you and there are some you have to pay yourself. If success was free and cheap, the whole world would have been filled with successful people. But you know better. You don't need to look far. You are an example of one who is yet to succeed.

"Pay the price and get the prize. Stand for this result you are seeking for. Stand for this certificate. Stand for the dreams you have. Stand for the goals. Stand for what you believe. If you don't, no one will do that for you. And don't you dare cry foul, blaming anyone for not supporting you when you lacked the backbone to stand by what you believe in.

"So, show me what manner of man that you are. Are you the kind that runs from a fight? Are you the kind that mops your tears with a towel and plays the coward or are you a man that dares? A man that aims?"

He muttered, "I will fight"

"Well, I will watch you do that. Its your fight, its your life, if you don't live it; no one will live it for you. The true proof of faith is action. The true proof of a dream is pursuit."

He got to his door, opened it and turned on his laptop to write his thoughts. He concluded that no matter how long it would take him, he would push for what he wants.
