TECHNOLOGY, AN IGP AND A SPEECH
May social media not become the instrument for causing untold damage to our polity and national ethos. The way we share anything just for the sake of sharing baffles me. Several people have posted and shared the viral video of the purported gaffe of the IGP reading and stumbling over a speech at an event. I did not need to watch it to the end before I knew that there was mischief at play. A simple technology in editing process has been made to confuse our gullible psyches again. Does anyone remember a similar video of Jacob Zuma, former President of South Africa purportedly stumbling over Genesis 1 verse 1? The same technology was used here. It has been done with Obama, Trump, Bush and so many others that it should be deja vu. Yet we so gleefully broadcast the same inanity because it fits a narrative.
Haba! Again I ask as I have had cause to in time past, "Who did this to us?" Does partisanship erode common sense?
How come it was sent out by only an online TV medium? Was there no national news agency there to capture and report that "gaffe"? Admittedly, he may have stumbled over a few words. Who doesn't when reading a speech, even the one you prepared? I have been in the business of public speaking for the greater part of my adult life and I still sometimes stumble over words while reading a script.
But no public officer (not even a Police recruit) would protractedly stumble over the same words for the length of time presented in that video. A simple effect of layered repetition on a video editing software was used! Remember that the man in question was at least a Police Commissioner before becoming IGP! And this was definitely not his first public outing!
If you believe everything you saw in that video, it is unfortunate! That was used to test the waters. I shudder what will be used to assail our sensibilities in 2019!
Be careful what you join people to circulate about anyone. If you participated in circulating the video, I advise you pull it down from your wall and delete from your whatsapp posts. It's the dignifying thing to do.
Nigeria will outlive this season!
