Enlightenment On Feeding Layers by uniquedamsel16: 4:44pm On May 21, 2018
Good day nairalanders, am a new poultry farmer and I really need enlightenment. I have layers that I started rearing since day old and they are 19 days old today. I have been feeding them with chick starter from day one but the chicks starter feed has finished. Therefore, am confused with what to feed them with. Can I continue feeding them with the starter or i should change to grower mash? If am to continue with stater at what age can i change to grower mash? I will also like to know the effect of grower mash to chicks when they are still underage. Urgent response will be highly appreciated. Thanks

You should get knowledge first, before you venture into any biz. Feed them starter 4 to 6 weeks thereafter changer to grower till they reach 22 weeks

0-8 weeks - Chick mash
8-16 weeks - Grower
16-19 weeks - pre-layer mash
19-above - layer mash

Thanks for your quick response. Now am ready to get more knowledge. Will there be any negative effect if layers are given growers mash when they are still below weeks? The reason for asking the above question is that, there is a poultry farmer I know and he has been in the business for a while. I went to him to seek advice as per the right feed for layers but to my surprise he told me that he has been feeding his layers with grower mash ( grower concentrate mixed with milled corn) since they are a day old and this set of layers will be 4 weeks in two days time. Though, this is his first time of raising layers all that he had been raising before now is broilers and cockerel. Will this in anyway affect the birds particularly their eggs when they start laying?

you see that guy above my post?

He gave you the standard feeding schedule for layers and you came to counter with this street farmer's idea.

That's why he said that last thing.

You want to reinvent the wheel.. Go on your own.. Stop asking questions!

It seems you didn't get me right. I went to the man before coming here in the first place. I came here because what I met him doing confused me the more and you had done well by your enlightenment. I made further enquires so I could go back to the man and give him right knowledge, telling him the danger therein

And if they refused to lay as at when due. he should not complain. Every bird type has their feeding pattern. take for example Broiler, we have broiler starter and finisher. if you dont feed them like that they will not grow as expected. For layer we have layer starter, Grower and Layers mash. For cockrel you use starter and continue with grower. Different feed type has different nutrients and the main thing is protein called crude protein. When you give grower to chicks, it is like giving a new born child Eba, Amala and Fufu and not giving mothers milk
