Seahorse Lubricants... An In-depth Review by weyreypey: 5:32am On May 24, 2018
With the plethora of merchants of imported lubricants in Nigeria and nairaland.... It seems all these have come to an end with the debut of seahorse Lubricants.... Now car owners can keep their engines in top conditions with this super lubricants from the stables of Seahorse based in the southeast region of Nigeria.

OR AM I DECEIVING MYSELF...ARE THEY DECEIVING THEMSELVES..ARE THE CAR OWNERS AT WORSE RISK? WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE APPROVAL OF THE SEAHORSE LUBRICANTS? IS SON CAPABLE OF CERTIFYING LUBRICANTS AS A BODY? IS SON A CREDIBLE INSTITUTION, ARE THEY THAT EQUIPPED?
LET'S FIND OUT.

Interview granted by MD/CEO of seahorse lubricants and the chairman... Curiously I noticed that no mention of the API ACEA or ILSAC ratings or car manufacturer's approvals were mentioned.... The more you look the less you see? Or what?

Moved by publications in the media where Seahorse Lubricants were displayed alongside other products as adulterated and substandard, the management of SeaHorse Lubricant Limited, Ozubulu, Anambra State, has refuted the publications, describing them as handiwork of disgruntled competitors.

In a statement signed by MD/CEO of the company, Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo, said: “The attention of SeaHorse Lubricants has been drawn to a spurious story aired on Galaxy Television purporting that the company manufactures and markets substandard products. We deny this unfounded and baseless allegation and refute the story in its entirety as our company, since inception, has maintained high standards of quality as confirmed by series of routine tests carried out on our products by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

“We have been issued SON’s MANCAP certificate, which is the only approved means of certifying products qualities in Nigeria. SeaHorse dismisses the allegation as the handiwork of detractors, who have become intimidated by the looming presence and increasing demands of our quality products.”

He further noted: “The true story is that one of the company’s warehouses in Lagos was invaded in commando style by men who claimed to be officials of SON. What is difficult to understand is why such invasion was neither preceded by a complaint nor by any quality test before rushing to the media the same day. Why the haste to discredit SeaHorse without investigation or subjecting the company’s products to necessary and appropriate tests? Whose interests were served by this ominous haste to smear the integrity of a company that has been duly and routinely certified by SON?

SeaHorse is a multi-billion naira lubricant and allied products plant in Ozubulu, Anambra State, and the company’s products are routinely checked and tested by SON, and till date, our products’ qualities have not been faulted or questioned. Therefore, we ask, on whose authority and by what tests were the company’s products adjudged substandard? Who and what reasons were behind the invasion of our warehouse and the subsequent charade on national televisions and various newspapers. We respect SON and appreciate its commitment to quality and safety but a situation where its officials work at crossroads with the organisation’s laid down procedures becomes confusing and suspicious.

“We cannot reconcile the invasion of our warehouse and the hasty media trial and conviction on television with SON’s recent routine tests on our products and its certification of our products’ high standards. We ask our numerous customers to disregard this attempt by detractors to smear the impeccable reputation of our company and its products.

“SeaHorse will continue to be driven by a strong commitment to exceed the expectations of its patrons by producing excellent products branded by high quality,” the statement said.

Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP)

The Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) is a mandatory product certification scheme put in place by SON to ensure that all locally manufactured products in the country conform to the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) before such products are presented for sale in the market or exported.

The programme started in 2006 and ensures compliance of Made-in-Nigeria products to the minimum requirements of the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) or Code of practice thereby promoting fair competition at both domestic and international markets, as well as safeguarding the safety and health of consumers in the overall interest of promoting economic and industrial development of Nigeria.

The procedures for MANCAP certification involve:

Inspection of the production processes.
Sampling and testing of the products against the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) to confirm compliance through conformity assessment processes.
Report of inspections and test results are compiled by State Offices and forwarded to Product Certification Directorate for evaluation and recommendation for SON Management’s approval for certification.
If the product meets the requirement of the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standard, MANCAP certificate and MANCAP logo which bears a unique number for that product is issued for the product upon payment of applicable administrative charges.
A MANCAP certificate is valid for three years after which the product must undergo recertification.

The MANCAP logo is to be fixed on the smallest unit pack of the product after which the product can be introduced into the market for sale.

The product is monitored through periodic factory inspections and testing to ensure consistent compliance to the Nigerian Industrial Standard by SON officials.

This is mancap.... Now to the meat of the matter....
Where are the test results? What and what were tested for?

If SON permits the sales of obsolete oils in Nigeria by even big oil companies... Then I will think twice about taking their client paid for certifications seriously.

My candid advice to the promoters of seahorse lubricants is to obtain internationally recognised ratings... Which will enable them hold their heads high and claim the vast market available in Nigeria which other big firms have been treating with disdain.
