Yes, this is a mall in its definition

But it's miles far from a world-class mall

Please buildings like this are all over Enugu and PH...there's nothing special about them

People want to see breathtaking structures
Why do you sound so pained, did I say that the mall is world-class, please if you beef with anyone settle it already because is making you paranoid.

Nah, nwanne.

I neither have a beef nor chicken with anyone

I'm just expressing my view.

Thanks for the pix though, but I am impressed with the structure

Apart from the hotels, one of the most impressive structures I've seen on this thread recently is the Imo State Investment house

Nobody passes that structure without looking at it twice

That's what I am talking about!

If people can be building skyscrapers that redefine the skylines in Ibadan, what's stopping us in the east?

Okorocha enters the next stage in urban renewal after completion of over 20km of 10 lane expressways through Owerri city. Other States will have a lot of catch up to do in the coming years as grassing and tree planting has taken over the highways. This is not Abuja or New Owerri but old Owerri which had illegal structures demolished and major roads expanded. Presently Douglas Road and Wetheral Road are receiving the magic touch.
Oh I love this

i can't wait to see the beauty and serenity of Owerri in few years coming..

very beautiful, Any update on Douglas road
I bet you wouldn't want to see the pictures of Douglas road right now. That road will be his Achilles heel. Destroying a road that was in good condition in the name of expansion yet digging new HIGHLY SUBSTANDARD gutters only few inches apart is nothing but witchcraft. I used to support Rochas but what he did at Douglas road always fills me with anger. That was absolute waste of state resources and economic activities. Yes, he did some good projects but the way he went about town like someone on vengeance was unbelievable and unnecessary. He lost many people that once held him in high esteem. I was never against the relocation of both Eke Ukwu and New markets but closing Douglas road for months now for no justifiable reason like a drunken emperor was in bad taste. Sometimes I wonder if the man is on drugs based on his reckless and I'll thought actions.

Can you please post the pictures of the Imo state investment house or tell me the page I can see it?
You have a point about building a couple of high rise buildings in our cities. Ibadan and Kano are over 70,% filled with shanties/ghetto houses unlike Eastern cities where you have a large spread of decent looking houses but in those places, they selected particular areas where they built a few high rise buildings and flyovers to give these cities a cosmopolitan outlook. Although there are several high rise hotel buildings of 5, 6 &7 storeys springing up all over New Owerri but the government can still build one or two of say 15 storeys and lease them out to companies to manage for proper maintenance. Even a place like Onitsha can easily have a "Lagos outlook" especially around Upper Iweka if only they can build a few skyscrapers like was done in Ibadan and Kano. I'm appalled that even P.H lacks such skyscrapers despite all the resources at their disposal. Maybe only the Secretariat and presidential hotel at Aba road are decent enough. Owerri will easily rival Abuja if we can build some grand buildings to improve on its general aesthetic.

Amaechi did it in Port-Harcourt in partnership and saw to a 90% completion but politics has stalled its completion. Rainbow town is a moderate highrise estate.

Update on lacarde mall due for opening in the last quarter of the year 2018

I must confess that I never believed in this project because that Okohia was used in duping a lot of land speculators and the road to it from Onitsha road and World bank wasn't tarred. I thought it was a fraud but I'm wowed now. This is the type of market Okorocha wants in Owerri metropolis not the normal one we call "shade" and the new Ekeukwu Mall replacing Old Ekeukwu is modeled this same way.

Douglas Road was closed last month not "for months" but it will remain so till the road is completed. Ask those in Port Harcourt when Amaechi built Ada George road how many years it was closed. Even Nyesom Wike closed Abacha road for 2 years. As for Douglas Road trading should be completely outlawed even when opened as it was what led to the decay and obstruction of the road. The traders there should move to Naze or Egbeada and forget about coming back to deface it.

Lol, "I lied?" Why would I lie on something that everyone can easily verify? You claim that Douglas road has never been in good condition, please which section of Douglas road was bad? Beginning from the Garden Park/Ama JK end through Mbaise road junction, to Ama Awusa all the way down to where it terminates at Whetheral junction/Emmanuel College, can you tell us the section that was bad? If you check my posts here you will discover that I have never criticized Rochas unjustly. The only problem Douglas road was facing was traffic jam brought about by street trading, the presence of two major markets and indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road median/poor sanitation management by the waste disposal agency.
I have never been against road expansion and I'm happy with the effort at Bank road and Orlu roads as well as Whetheral, and what has to be emphasized here is that those roads had ample spaces that allowed for expansion without any significant demolition. Douglas unarguably is the most built up road in Owerri and most of the houses were built very close to the road. Now, the old gutters were destroyed only for new ones to be dug inches apart from it! Of what significance is the addition of a few inches considering the cost, resources and all that went into it? Again, are you in all sincerity comfortable with the kind of gutter that is being used to replace the old solid gutter? I can snap pictures of the gutter and post them here for all to see.

@Amaco, I'm still waiting for you to tell us which section of Douglas road was bad.
Suffix it to add that the relocation of the two markets and banning of street trading on Douglas road would have solved the problem of traffic jam.
Any one in this thread who is in Owerri can easily go to Douglas road and see what is happening, it is disheartening that a trunk A road that was built to last for decades with the asphalt overlay so thick that it's able to withstand the pressure of heavy duty trucks and tankers that drives on it without cracking is being replaced with "direct labour work"

Let us be truthful for once. Douglas road and Ekeukwu market has always been a disaster of bad road, heaps of refuse, gangsterism, cultism, robbery, murder and all sorts of anti-social activities. We don't need to dispute that at all and Okorocha took one of the hardest decisions ever by any elected official in his move to clean up and rebuild that area. Let us encourage him.

The Horn is a local tabloid and you can read this report made before the demolition of the market.

https://www.hornnewsnigeria.com.ng/featured/the-deteriorating-state-of-douglas-road-owerri/

For over three years now Douglas Road situated at the heart of Owerri, the Imo State capital, have continued to witness a steady decay arising mainly from over population and overcrowding.

The road which is the second major entry point to the state capital is presently in a deplorable condition.

There have been arguments as to why this important road have been abandoned by a state governor who is credited with road expansion and opening of new roads.

A school of thought has it that the governor, Rochas Okorocha is piqued by the supposedly hostile attitude of indigenes of the state capital.

While the governor wants the Ekeukwu market relocated to another site outside the metropolis, the indigenes insist that their ancestral market must remain in its present location.

This invariably has pitched the governor against the Owerre indigenes culminating in the famous refuse dump controversy where the state government refused to evacuate the mountain of refuse at the Douglas road, until the market is relocated.

Unfortunately as the saying goes, when two elephants fight, the grass suffers. This is the sorry situation at Douglas road, Owerri where a portion of the ever busy road has virtually been cut off by erosion.

At the main gate of the market, immediately opposite the Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, the road is about to cave in if something urgent is not done.

It is stating the obvious that Douglas road, Owerri is an important road that links smaller roads in the municipality and with its current deplorable condition, the traffic hold-up currently witnessed in the municipality is bound to worsen.

We want to therefore appeal to the state governor, Rochas Okorocha to bury any bitterness or anger to rehabilitate Douglas road.

While we commend him for the current Urban Renewal programme of his administration, we appeal to him to have a rethink on the issue of Douglas road and do something before the road completely gets out of hand.

We believe that governor Okorocha who is the father of all, will head this humble cry and restore Douglas road to its original beauty and candour.

We equally wish to appeal to the indigenes of Owerri and all residents of Owerri especially those who have converted Douglas road into a market to desist from challenging the authority of the governor and co-operate with the administration to rehabilitate Douglas road.

It is a thing of regret that street urchins and armed robbers have made Douglas road their major operating base.

This is a challenge to not only the state government but to all lovers of decency and modernity to rise above sentiments and reclaim Douglas road. This is our plea.

Yes, I agree with you that a lot of bad things were happening at Douglas road which was due to the presence of those two markets and some indigenes and cultists who took advantage of it to be committing all sorts of anti social behaviours. But with the removal of those markets and banning of street trading, the problem would have been solved to a large extent. My point is that the so called "expansion" of Douglas road was absolutely unnecessary, especially when you consider the cost and effect against what obtained before. The existing gutters should have been covered and street light put in place which would have cost far less money despite having the same benefit. I am both an indigene and resident so I want the best for my state.

Well done! But sometimes, someone needs to blast u especially when u start going out of line like u did with the Okpala school.

The other day I watched Rochas saying he would build school for the blind, biko, tell him to focus on his ongoing projects and forget the new idea.

Development is a process; he can't be a jack of all trades. His successor will continue from where he stopped. My fear now is that by 2019, Imo State will have countless uncompleted projects...

And if he can't manage Imo State College of Advanced Professionals, he should privatize it before leaving office. It seems like a curse: the only business Nigeria’s government manages well is their media houses, where they use for propaganda

I heard that many banks financed the project in the hopes of getting their shares, but something went wrong. Well, I didn't get the gist clearly, but I once heard FirstBank staff tell the story.

As regards my comments, basically, when I am tired of writing, I come on nairaland to rest. You know, freelancing can be boring some times because there's no colleague to gist with. embarassed

Just keep chatting to bunch of clients I may never see in my life is tiring. So, I like resting on nairaland because I find the platform engaging

Ok, that's true. Freelancing can really turn one into a recluse, however, if you have the capital you can open a business that is not demanding and combine both.
