Op, your post is very misleading. I work for a government parastatal. To start with. The job is a full time job. You are not expected to engage in any other income generating business while working for government, except agriculture. I know a couple of my colleagues that have been sacked for conflict of interest. The salary you say that is 30,000 is not the full picture. Some allowances are paid upfront. And there are deductions like tax and pension in the monthly salary before they arrive at the 30,000. And what about benefits like free medical? Those doing menial jobs can save all the money and one day spend it all in a hospital when they or their family members fall sick. While my family and I walk into good hospitals, get treated and just sign their paper. And i tell u, if work for government long enough and truly rise in the system, you will get comformtable and really very comfortable. |

Opinionated:I disagree on the oil Worker salary. Total, NLNG, Shell, Chevron, etc earns more than that. Multinational oil servicing worker earn about 300k consolidated salary, but when you add other allowances it goes up. I'm not taking about contract staffs parading as permanent staffs. Nice write up Op. This is the reason i resigned from my job last year and fully into business. I am making almost 3x of what i was earning in a month. NB: I was doing a nice job |

Opinionated:This is such a silly and simplistic analysis. Your salary is not a reflection of what you are worth. Young Nigerians should work to increase capacity and increase pay, thats how it works. If you divide your output, you wear yourself thin. That's why Nigerians are where we are today. Nobody is satisfied with their work. |

Opinionated:Average Lagos hawker makes more than 2k daily? Are you talking about his revenue or net gain after cost of goods sold must have been deducted? If it is the later, you are WRONG. Not even sachet water that has a high turnover will give you that. Furthermore, if you take out UBA, Zenith and maybe Skye bank due to their recent problems, no bank pays an Executive Trainee/Graduate Trainee/Entry Level, Full Staff cadre 120k. We all know the importance of getting multiple sources of income. However, if you must educate us on it's importance, please take the pain to do a good research so as not to mislead people. |

ritalori2:Apt? Lol. The write up lacks basic statistics. Perhaps he forgot the hawker has to recover the cost of goods sold before he can say he has made money; the farmer also has to recover all costs incurred in growing his crops before he can talk about net gain likewise the driver. You dont look at how much they are with at the end of the day. You need to consider the costs they incured in keeping their machines up. Someone repairs a vehicle with 25k within a week and also makes 30k within that same week. Would you say he earns more than a salary earner whose only cost is cost of transportation and that is not to mention the health implications of such jobs. |

This is what I want to say, according to Robert Kiyosaki in the cash flow quadrant. there are 4 sets of people E- employed S - Self employed (business that needs your attention actively to survive) B - Business owner (business that has developed a model that can stand on its own even without your presence) I - Investor The E and S are in the left quadrant, these guys are the ones struggling daily to met up The B and I are where the big boys are, that's where you can earn financial freedom. so he tells people to try and switch into the B or I sector if you must live a stress free live Now what am I driving at, Yes you may earn 60,000naira as a employee, try to have a footing into the Investor quadrant, where you invest into something and it reaps fruit for you. Most importantly, invest in yourself. I have a friend who was working for 10years, he didn't improve himself, no additional professional training or certificate until he got sacked and reality dawned on him. Nobody can take away Investment in yourself, advance in yourself take up training, attend seminar, get more professional certfs/skills and Your 60K salary will be a thing of the past. Then you can use your expertise to start up a business that can stand on itself rendering services not the garbage OP is advising (sell pants or bra or this or that) A doctor can be an employee with a govt hospitals same time acting as a consultant, also has his own hospital (Business owner) and Invest money in properties (Investor). He has legs in all quadrants. Don't be in a hurry to take your salary and start opening a shop for the sake of second income. First Invest in yourself, Your shop can be taken away by the Govt, or Duped by fraudsters but the Investment you make in yourself will last forever! |

thatigboman:What Government jobs do for you is giving you relative comfort at most but not that comfort you want. And this comes after years of dedication. As in most cases do not come until after 10yrs of active service if we are to go by Avg Nigerian analysis.Know with the same amount of effort put into serving the govt. If such was to be put serving yourself in a decade, where you will be financially. The only advantage of Govt. job is SECURITY which is not 100%.At the end of the day,you are stuck in a place and they dictate how you move and career growth. So while it is a civil service rule not to have other things running, its at the same arm length the reason why Nigeria do not have a middle class and reason the society is where it is. |
