Three years ago I bought a 2000 Toyota sienna , while the speedometer was showing 4000, a sticker of car service point in 2011 was saying the speedometer then was 194000 miles.

It one of the problem Nigeria is having, when you buyer see a car with 60k mileage not knowing that the car as gone almost 180k mile, which is past the expected lifetime mileage, by some significant percentage, they start using, after one or two years problem set, the buyer start spending money on repairs not know that the engine is already saying i am tired,


according to some research have made the expected lifetime mileage of most car is between 150k miles or eight year, and imagine sell a car that the expected lifetime millage as pass, do you expect the car to not give problem,

My own take on this is that car seller for the sake of God, should not change the millage let the buyer know what the are buy, when you tamper with the mileage you are deceiving them and it not good to deceive people

And also i think those that do the act should be punished by the law, it because no one as been punished since that why everybody think it is normal thing to do

We practice catch-up law in Nigeria.

That's why the US and much of Europe have had specific laws about several automotive offences for decades, and in Nigeria most Legal 'authorities' probably would stare blankly at you if you asked them about something like VIN tampering and odometer rollback.

No laws, no mention of them anywhere. None that I've come across.
