Chapter 1

Ndidi lay in bed crying. She couldn’t believe it was all over. Even though they had had a lot of disagreements over the last couple of weeks she never thought that Tony would actually end their relationship. Four years in school, the only man she ever knew was him. Traveling to different parts of the country for their National Youth Service had some strain on their relationship, but thanks to technology, they kept in touch with video calling. When they both got back to Lagos a few months ago, she noticed he was different, but thought things would get better with time.

‘Where would I start?’ She thought to herself. Tony was her all. She never cheated on him. Her friend, Joy used to tease her all the time about looking like Beyonce but acting like Tony was doing her a favor by dating her. She would always say ‘If I was as beautiful as you, I would definitely have multiple hot guys chasing me.’

She heard the front door open downstairs and sat up in bed. Just at that moment, power was restored, and the ceiling fan above her bed started the slow spin. She got off her bed and walked over to the wall socket to plug her phone, all the while thinking of what she would tell her mom for not having started cooking dinner yet.

“Didi!!!” She heard her younger brother shout out and hissed. As she sat back in bed she wondered why he was just getting back from school. “Didi, where are you?” He said in his tiny American accent. Jonathan was 6 years old, 17 years younger than Ndidi, but had spent his first five years in America, and it was hard convincing him that he had to call Ndidi aunty Ndidi. ‘But she is my sister, not my aunt’ he would always say.
“Didi!” he shouted out as he burst into the room. “Why didn’t you answer me? You need to come quick.” He said as he held her hand and dragged her off the bed. With heightened excitement, he was able to successfully pull her all the way to the door before she stood her ground.
“Come where?” She said; resisting his pull as he kept using all the force in his little body like his life depended on it. He was still in his white taekwondo uniform, and his glasses strap was tied in a knot at the back of his head. “Stop pulling me. What’s wrong with you?”
He released her hand and caught his breath before saying, “My teacher is a magician.”
“What?”
“Just come quick, so you can see for yourself.” He said and tried to pull her again.
“Stop it Jonathan; I am not in the mood for one of your pranks.” She snapped at him. He let go of her slowly, and with a sad look on his face, he walked out of her room dejected. She was in a bad mood, but she felt worse making him feel bad. “Wait, Jonathan. Let me get my phone.” She said as she rushed to the wall socket to unplug her phone.

……….

As they walked to Jonathan’s Dojo, he kept telling her about how he snuck up on his sensei when everybody had left, and he saw him moving chairs around without touching them. Even though everything that was coming out of Jonathan’s mouth sounded like gibberish to her, she couldn’t deny the fact that he sounded convincing enough that he had actually seen what he saw.

They entered the quiet compound, and she felt stupid walking behind her 6 year old brother, who was tiptoeing to the entrance of his Dojo. The place used to be a church, and Ndidi remembered worshiping there once when she was a teenager. It hadn’t changed much; it still had well tended gardens on either sides of the bungalow, and an irregularly bent coconut tree in the middle of the garden on the left. The building still retained the same cream color she had remembered it with.

One of the large doors was opened, and as Jonathan approached it, he looked back and made a sign with his hand for her to come forward. Just then, she heard a deep voice from behind her say, “Hello. Can I help you?”

Chapter 2

At 5 ft 8, she always considered herself tall for a girl, but standing face to face with this guy she felt pretty short. He was tall and muscular; it felt like his muscles were going to tear through the white tee shirt he had on any moment now. “Hello.” He repeated and Ndidi realized she had been staring at him for a little too long without saying anything.

“Oh! Sorry, I…I actually came here with my brother.” When she turned around, Jonathan was nowhere in sight. She turned back to face the guy before saying, “You saw my little brother right?” He looked at her puzzled and she laughed lightly before saying, “this is quite embarrassing. He told me his…are you his teacher?” The guy nodded and she continued with, “He told me…he said, or shit. This is really silly.” She was laughing at herself now as she walked towards the entrance of the hall. “Jonathan! Come out here!!”
“You are Jonathan’s sister?” He enquired.
“Yes. Long story.” She said as she stepped into the dojo. Except for a few chairs and benches at the upper left area of the hall, a big round mat at the center, the place was quite empty. There were two doors on the other end of the dojo, but she was sure her brother couldn’t have gotten there that fast. “Jonathan!” She shouted out again as she headed towards the side door by the right.
“What exactly did you guys come for?” The taekwondo teacher said as he kept up with her.
“He said some funny stuff…it doesn’t make sense. I just followed him here so he would let me be.” There was really no place to hide in the hall, so she went out through the side door and headed towards the backyard. She walked passed a couple of taekwondo uniforms hanging on lines and guessed the guy lived there.

The coconut tree was shaking when they got to the other side of the compound. Up at the top was Jonathan. “Jonathan, how the hell did you get up there?” Ndidi said in shock as she rushed over to the tree. “Can you please help me get him down?” She turned around and said to taekwondo teacher.
“Stop! Don’t come up here or I will jump.” Jonathan said from above.
“Please don’t listen to him. Just help me get him down.” Ndidi said. It became windy all of a sudden, and the white cotton gown she had on was lifted up by an upward breeze, almost exposing her panties. She was so scared for her brother she didn’t bother to hold down her dress.
“I’m serious Didi.” Jonathan said and the seriousness in his tone made the teacher and Ndidi look at each other confused on what to do next. “Perform your magic, so that Ndidi knows I’m not lying.”
“Jonathan, what are you talking about?” The teacher said with a puzzled look on his face.
“Jonathan, please just come down. I will give you anything you want.”
“Just tell him to do some magic.”
“Please what is he talking about?” The teacher said to Ndidi with a lost look on his face.
“I really don’t know. Please, just help me get him down.”
“Okay. I will make him use his powers by force.” Jonathan said and let go of the tree.
“Noo!” Ndidi screamed, but what she saw next made her voice seize in her throat. Jonathan stopped falling, and like he was being held up by a bunch of ropes, he slowly levitated till his feet touched the ground. From the corner of her eye, she had seen the taekwondo teacher instinctively raise his hands as Jonathan started falling, and it was clear he had something to do with stopping his fall, but her brain couldn’t process what had just happened. She stood there, mouth wide open, looking at her little brother keep repeating the words, “I told you” as he punched the air in excitement.

……….

They were in the hall now, sitting opposite each other on benches; Ndidi on one side, the sensei and Jonathan on the other side. The guy was asking them not to tell anyone about what they had just witnessed, but she was still confused. What exactly did I see? She thought to herself. She had read somewhere that the brain makes us start forgetting dreams immediately we wake up because it doesn’t want us to go crazy from getting the real world and the dream world mixed up. Right now, she wished her memory of the incidence could be wiped. Jonathan on the other hand had a grin on his face, and she wondered how his little brain could comprehend what had just happened. On second thought, she concluded that his age was a major factor in why he wasn’t shook like her right now.
“What’s your name?”
“Her name is Ndidi. But you can call her Didi like me.” Jonathan said with a smile.
“Ndidi, please do you understand what I said? You can’t tell anyone about this.” Ndidi still looked lost in thought as she nodded in agreement at what he had said. “It’s hard to explain things like these to people, and I would really appreciate if you could keep this between us.”
She looked up at him, then at Jonathan, and then back at him. “Please can you just tell me this was some sort of magic trick you and Jonathan have been practicing?”
“Umm! Well…” He was saying but got distracted by a ringing phone. It was Ndidi’s phone.
Looking at the phone screen, she said, “It’s my mom. She’s probably looking for us.” She got up and Jonathan did the same. “Please, what’s your name?”
“Olu.”
“Okay, Olu, we have to go now, but I’m definitely coming back for some answers as soon as I get a chance.”

Chapter 3

Jonathan usually had his Taekwondo lessons on Wednesdays and Fridays, and she had initially planned to wait till Friday to go and see Olu for some answers, but what she saw that day was supernatural and her rational brain wasn’t going to let any other thoughts dominate her mind until it got a logical explanation for what happened that day. So, around 2pm on Thursday, she left the house for the dojo. Jonathan usually got back from school around 4pm and she was sure she would be back home by then.

She had on the same white flare gown from yesterday as she didn’t want him having problems recognizing her. The dojo was on a street off her hers’; about three minutes walk from her house. As she walked into the street, she heard someone shout “Beyonce” from a building to her left. She kept walking. When she was a teen, being told she looked like the superstar musician made her feel good, but now in her twenties, it pissed her off. Not like she had developed a sort of hatred for Beyonce over the years, but when you are constantly compared to another human being, it sort of makes you wonder if people would ever appreciate you for your own greatness.

When she got outside the dojo, the gate was partially opened like the last time, and she wondered why he was so loose with security. As she walked in, her eyes went straight to the coconut tree and she had a quick flash back. She stood in one spot as she went over what had happened again in her head, and then shook off the thought before proceeding to the entrance of the dojo.
Even though one side of the door was opened, she knocked and waited. There was no response, so she knocked a bit louder, but still no answer. “Hello” she said as she walked into the hall. There he was on the mat in the middle of the hall, bare-chested with just his taekwondo pants on. He was in a meditative posture, with his legs folded. “Hello…It’s me Ndidi, Jonathan’s brother.” She said as she approached him. He was facing her with his eyes open but didn’t make eye contact with her; it was clear to her that his body was there, but not his mind. She stopped approaching when she was about twenty feet away, and as she made to turn around and leave, something strange happened. She heard a low voice say, ‘Take a seat and wait.’ It felt like she had imagined it, but it sounded so real. She looked at him, and his eyes were still like that of a visually impaired person. To his right were a bunch of benches, and she walked over to seat on one of them.

He was very still, and she couldn’t help but stare at his well sculpted biceps. From the side view, his chest was still very visible, as the packs were pumped up, like that of a body builder. His chocolate complexion made his body features a lot more attractive to her. He had a chiseled jawline and was clean-shaven from the last time when he had a little stubble. Why am I noticing all these? She thought to herself. And then she heard him take a deep breath and exhale. “Sorry, I was in a deep meditative state.” He said as he got up and rubbed his neck.
“I’m sorry for disturbing your session.” She said and got off the bench she had been sitting on. As he approached her, she couldn’t get her eyes off his chest. He noticed her awkwardness and stopped half way. “I’ll be right back.” He said and rushed over to a room at the other end of the hall.
“Didi, right?” He said, forcing his body into a grey tee shirt as he approached her.
“No. That’s what my kid brother calls me. My name is Ndidi.”
“Okay. I will remember that.” He said with a smile. When he got face to face with her, he went on to say, “I guess you came here for some answers?”
She answered with “Yep” and sat back on the bench.
He took a breath, folded his arms and looked into space for a couple of seconds before reaching behind her for a bench. He lifted the thing like it was paper. “Okay. Umm! How do I…”
“Sorry, before you start, can I ask you a question that is totally off topic?”
“Go ahead.”
“How tall are you?”
He smiled before saying, “I’m 6 ft 5.”
“Wow! No wonder. And I was starting to think I was short.”
“That’s funny.” He said between laughs. “I would like to ask my own off topic question too.”
“Okay.”
“So, are you really Jonathan’s sister or his aunt?”
“Oh, I get that a lot. My parents were very young when they married, and were separated for ten years after they had me…Jonathan came after they got back together.”
“Hmm! That makes sense now.”
“So…are you…” Ndidi was saying and stopped to clear her throat before going ahead with, “Are you some sort of wizard or something?”
“No. No I’m not a wizard.” He said with his head bowed. He rubbed his forehead, as if trying to find the right words to explain himself to her. “I’m…”
“Wait, sorry for cutting you off, but did you communicate with me when I first walked in here?” She said and he smiled. “Or am I losing my mind? I could have sworn you asked me to seat.”
“Yes, I did. Telepathy is something I have recently been developing. But what I am a master of is Telekinesis.”
With a confused look on her face, she said, “I’m sure I have heard those words before, but I really don’t know what they mean.”
“Okay. Let me explain to you.”

Chapter 4

Telepathy is the use of the mind to communicate with another human being without speaking. Telekinesis is the ability to move objects without physically touching them. He kept talking, and using terms she didn’t understand, but that was what she had gotten from his speech so far. He sounded really excited talking about it, but it still was kind of spooky to her. At a point, she found herself looking at the ground, thinking. She noticed the woodwork floor for the first time, and started thinking of Jonathan falling on his face during practice and breaking his glasses.

“Are you listening to me?”
“What?” She said and looked up at him. “Oh, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I guess it all sounds like Latin to you.”
“Not really…it’s just that…Okay, yea, I have to confess, I don’t understand half of what you are saying.” She said and they both laughed. It was funny seeing a big guy like him laugh and look so harmless. He also looked a lot more handsome when he laughed. He had perfect teeth. Oh my God, he can hear my thoughts; she thought to herself and then looked to the ground again. After a few seconds of silence, she looked up and said, “Can I ask you a question?”
“Go ahead.”
“Can you hear what people are thinking at all times?”
“Not always. I have to concentrate hard to do that. But I can always sense if someone is planning to harm me.”
“Okay. That’s good.” She said and looked lost for a few seconds before adding, “This is still so strange to me. So…is it some sort of gift you were born with?”
“No. I developed it over 11 years. Anyone can do it, but it takes a lot of work; lot of practice and change of belief.”
“11 years? Wow! That’s a long time.”
“Yes. I was 15 when my uncle started teaching me. My Dad had been killed, and…” He was saying and then stopped abruptly, looked at her and smiled. “I don’t need to tell you all that. Let me just give you the basics.”
“Okay. Sorry about your Dad.”
“Thanks.” He said and got off the bench he was sitting on, walked over to the side door behind her, peeped out for a second, and then walked back to take his seat.

“This…this whole thing kind of goes against everything I have known all my life.”
“I know the feeling.”
“So…you’re not evil and you didn’t get powers from the devil?”
He smiled and shook his head before saying, “That’s typical belief of an African. And that’s why I keep the powers to myself.”
“Mmm.”
“If you could go back in time to like the 7th century, and you told the people there that you had a device that could enable you talk to someone in another town, you would probably be called a witch and burnt at the stake.”
“Mmm. You have a point.”
“So, right now, in 2018, Telekinesis is seen as witchcraft to those that don’t understand it.”
“You still need to explain to me more, because I don’t fully understand. How exactly do you…” She was saying then stopped like she was thinking of how best to express herself, and then she went on with, “Where exactly does the power to move things around come from?”
He looked into space for a few seconds before saying, “Let me think of the easiest explanation for you.”
“Okay.”
“Two factors come into play. The first factor has to do with the first law of thermodynamics.”
“The what?” She said with a puzzled look on her face.
“I’m guessing you weren’t a science student in school.” He said and she shook her head. “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can be transformed from one form to another.”
“Oh, I know that. I just didn’t know it was the…the…whatever you called it.” She said and they both laughed.
“So, using that law to answer your question…the energy or power I used to stop Jonathan’s fall was not created by me, I transformed another form of energy in my body to telekinesis energy.”
“Okay. So...”
“Everything you can think of is energy, just in various forms. You and I are a mass of energy vibrating at very high speed. Love is energy, hate is energy, and these forms of energy can be transformed to other forms of energy.”
“Mmm. Okay. I think I am getting this.”

“Sexual energy is one of the strongest forms of energy in man; that is why men do crazy things for sex sometimes.” He ignored the funny look on her face and continued with, “This is the form of energy I harness for my telekinesis powers.”
“I’d like to know how you do that.”
“Abstinence and meditation; I abstain from sex and then with meditation, I transfer my pent up sexual energy up to my brain.”
“That’s interesting. So…basically, the longer you go without sex, the stronger you become?”
“Exactly!”
“And if…” she was saying, and stopped to cough before continuing with, “If you do have sex, you lose your powers?”
“Not really…I just lose some energy…I lose some power.”
“Okay.”
“Yes, and the second reason why I am able to do what I do is because we are all connected. We are all part of the same thing.”
“I don’t understand.”
“This bench I’m sitting on, the building, me, you, the coconut tree, the ocean, the breeze, we are the same.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I know it is hard to understand, but that is the truth. We are one with everything in the universe. That’s why I could communicate with you earlier.”
“You’re telling me I am the same with this inanimate object I am sitting on?” She said and placed her hand on the bench.
“Not in totality, but the same original substance runs through you and the bench. Remember, the bench was once a tree.”
She thought for a while before saying, “So, you are saying that I have something in me that is also inside the bench?”
“Exactly! You are catching up fast. That thing is original substance; the life forming and life giving substance that connects everything on this planet.”
“Wow! I can’t believe this is actually starting to make sense to me.” She said and it made him smile. “But now that I know all these, can I do what you do?”
“No. Right now, you only know these things on a conscious level; your subconscious has to accept it as true, but is a very hard thing to achieve.” She gave him a strange look and he continued with, “Ndidi, trust me; you don’t want to go any further down the rabbit hole than you have already gone. Let’s just end this lecture here. Okay?”
“Mmm. Okay.”

Chapter 5

A few days had gone by since Olu explained everything to her, but she just couldn’t get herself to stop thinking of all he had revealed to her. Once in a while, Jonathan would wink at her but he never brought up the matter ever again. She wondered how he was able to live with that knowledge and be cool. She had gone online to do some research on the thing, and most of what popped up were people that could move a spoon just a few inches, or bend a spoon; but there was no one that did anything close to what she had seen Olu do.

Before she had left his place that day, he had taken time to show her all he could do; spinning pieces of paper around with ease, levitating benches and heavier objects was harder, but still he moved them without touching them. It was so magical.
Her phone started ringing and she rolled over in bed to see it was Tony calling. A frown appeared on her face. “Why is he calling?” She said out loud as she stared at the ringing phone. Just when something had made her forget about him, he had to pop up again. “Hello.” She said after picking the call.
“Hey, hi…how are you doing?” He spoke in a cheerful voice. After a few seconds went by without a response from her, he added, “Hey, Ndidi, nothing says we can’t still be friends.”
“Why did you call?”
“I called to see how you are doing; just checking up on you.”
“Okay. I’m cool.”
“So, how is Jonathan and…”
“Tony, sorry, I have to go. I am really busy right now.”
“Oh! Okay.”
“Bye.” She said and hung up. Her phone started ringing again and she muted it. When the phone stopped ringing, she went to her call log and blocked his phone number. It felt so refreshing to do.

She got off her bed, and headed out her room; staying their made her feel lazy. Her job search had been cut short a few weeks ago when Tony had broken up with her, but now she had to get back out there. Her aunt owned a fashion house in their neighborhood and she was now seriously considering her offer of taking up the job as a social media influencer of the brand. The pay was okay, and she just had to be there three days a week.

She walked into their downstairs living room wearing just a t shirt. The place was in pristine condition; the cleaning lady did a good job. She was about to walk out when she noticed something different; the TV had been replaced with a bigger one. It reminded her of the picture of D Banj’s TV she had seen on social media a few weeks ago. She always wondered why her dad spent so much on electronics when he was never home. Her mom was also almost never home as sometimes traveled a lot with the crew of her travels and tours company. Ndidi grabbed the remote control from the glass center table and turned on the TV. It was on CNN, and they were reporting a recent Boko Haram attack in the north, she grabbed the decoder remote and changed the channel to a Nigerian news station. The channel was reporting on how crime had increased in the country in the last couple of years. She sat on the couch closest to the TV and as she took thought of the severity of the data being presented to her, an idea popped in her head. She turned off the TV and headed back upstairs.
