S off, that means when you boot your phone you normally u see this word "for development purpose" .... That means you can flash twrp and custom rom, hold ur power key and volume buttom down to boot into fasboot then choose recovery with power button.... Your phone should boot into recovery(twrp or cwm).

No, but if you unlock ur bootloader it will wipe your phone, you can easily backup your stuffs

you are lucky it gave you that error in some cases after downloading the update during the installation you will get some error message then your phone won't boot again
